    Gary

With all due respect to Evan Miyakawa, Juwan Gary isn't a "glue guy" for Nebraska....he's arguably the best player on a team that either has 4 best players or no best players. Nebraska's glue guys are Josiah and Sam.

  2. Last season Derrick Walker made the 2nd team for the coaches and honorable mention for the media...I'd assume that in some regard that was due to the fact Derrick's numbers weren't as gaudy as others but you sure as heck had to gameplan for him. Coaches never voted Hunter Dickenson to the first team in the B1G despite how gaudy his numbers were...though he made the media team his last year. Probably the biggest takeaway isn't that one poll is better than the other....it's that there are two polls for the B1G post season and they can be very different. This last game at Michigan could be fairly important considering how poor that team is defensively and how lumped together all our players are. Really is an argument to make for Mast, Gary, Keisei, and even Brice. Winning and getting that 3rd-4th seed certainly helps as well given that conference standing does matter to some voters. It's cool if some guys get recognition like this but in some ways it's almost cooler if we have a team as successful as we do with only 3rd team B1G players.

  3. Kinda straying off topic, but I've been thinking that the next coach's kid likely to become a successful head coach himself is ... Sam Hoiberg. Whatever "it" is, Sam seems to have a lot of it. He really understands the game, has a high hoops IQ (same thing), and a lot of charisma. He's learning a lot from his dad. When he runs out of eligibility, I would not be the least bit surprised to see him get a graduate assistant job somewhere good. Maybe even here.

  5. That year was a bigger screw job than 2017-18. We won twice against KU, and won at Oklahoma. Also beat Missouri. All teams that made the tournament.

  6. Nice thought! You are spot on with Nebraska being in the wilderness for 40 years. Okay, 1986 to 2024 is only 38 years, but close enough. The problem is, Moses didn't make it to the Promised Land. He led the Children of Israel to the doorstep, but Joshua actually led them across the Jordan River into the Promised Land. Now, if you want Keisei lifting up the rod and parting the Red Sea, that would be a cool tee shirt.

I don't care if it makes me a bad person, but I really, really, REALLY want Wake Forest to miss the cut and have to sit at home and watch us dancing. I know it's petty, but that's honestly how I feel.

  9. Serious question: How much better would the perception of the Big Ten be if we had a couple teams as pathetic as Georgetown & DePaul? I was listening to a discussion on the radio about all of the Big East bubble teams and they were saying their resumes stacked up favorably to Nebraska's because they had better road records and that got me thinking. It would be nice to have a couple of conference in the bank before the season even starts because you know there are two teams out there are automatic wins. So I looked at the numbers and they confirmed my suspicions . . . Georgetown & DePaul resemble middle of the pack low-major teams more then the P6 teams they claim to be: Team KemPom / BartT / NET Georgetown 197 181 203 DePaul 315 313 322 Michigan 124 117 129 Rutgers 90 98 90 UNO 261 264 272 We all know Michigan is bad, but they are light years ahead of DePaul & Georgetown. UNO is a (not so random) middle of the pack low-major team, and their metrics are way better than DePaul. And Georgetown is a lot closer to UNO than they are the B1G's next to last place team (Rutgers). I know conference records don't effect tourney selection, but it does impact perception. it would be nice if Nebraska had the feather in their cap of another couple of road conference wins just to get rid of that talking point. Or maybe the B1G wants Nebraska to be that bottom-feeding team, but we won't cooperate?

  11. Completely agree. I think it’s a badge of honor if we were to finish top-4 in this league without any serious threats for all-league players. interestingly, all-Big Ten teams should be inversely related to COTY in our case. If we finish 3rd in this damn conference without any marquee players then Hoiberg has to be lock for COTY (he might be anyway)

  12. Bump. We're coming down to the wire on this. We're a team where the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts. And that means our guys getting post-season recognition might not be commensurate with our conference finish. We're a collection of a bunch of guys who can hurt you but no individual superstars. I still think the branding of Keisei is going to pay some dividends for him in terms of post-season recognition, though.

  15. Wake Forest lost. They have to be on the outside looking in right? They’d need to win multiple games in their conference tournament to get in I would think.

  23. Could your imagine? It’s the dog days of summer in Mid-July. It’s 108 outside. And we start a historical game thread at 7 PM where everyone’s invited to join and watch one of our previous basketball games while cooling off from the day.

  24. The nice thing about all 3 of them, I don't think any of them are necessarily looking to be Head Coaches right now. Coach Ernie seems pretty settled in his role, Coach Howard does too and he's too young/unpolished, and Coach Loesner essentially gets to be a co-Head Coach with this team. I think Coach found himself a loyal, engaged, intelligent group of dudes.

  25. I don’t know how to make this make sense. But I would vote Keisei ahead of anyone else on the team for all-conference accolades. Yet, I would vote Mast our most VALUABLE player. And yet again, I would vote Gary our most IMPORTANT player. Pretty cool season of basketball we are experiencing. Over the course of the whole season, I’d say Brice has been our most improved player. Even though his numbers have dropped just a bit since non-con. His progression and role acceptance on both ends has been as vital to our current success as anything else.

  26. Right now, I think Keisei gets 2d team honors and Mast and Gary looking at honorable mention. Thats not only fair, it's awesome. We don't depend on a star player to win. That''s ideal in sports.

  30. DePaul has to be the worst P5 team ever. And that’s sad to see. However road record is part of the overall team sheet. So if I am comparing teams and I see a team has 3 road wins and I look at the bottom and two are DePaul and GTown… while the other only has 2 at KState and Indiana… I know which one I’m picking.

  32. Predictive metrics are so weird. Wake Forest has lost 3 in a row to Notre Dame, VA Tech, and Ga Tech and is still ahead of us in Pom and BPI. We dropped 2 spots in BPI because (checks notes) Va Tech and Northwestern hopped us?

    All B1G

All of this bodes well for next year. Alexis, Potts and Nissely are all back next season, with a very nice freshman group coming in. Hopefully will transition and assimilate together and make a super team in 2024. Got lucky in my predictions and pretty much called all the Nebraska players and their ALL B1G selection spots. We all get lucky (hopefully) some times. Really though, two freshman on the ALL FRESHMAN team ! That's huge !

  42. Ernie Ziegler, Adam Howard, Nate Loesner are our assistant coaches. They seem to mesh as a group and all appear to be well engaged on the sideline. Add in the supporting staff such as Joseph and Luca (and many others) leads me to believe this is one of the better coaching groups we have had. Danny had a good staff for one or two years and Cip had a good staff towards the end of his regime as well. I'm not 100% sure where all their responsibilities lie; but I have a pretty good idea. I simply love the individual and team development and cohesiveness I see on the floor. I also look at the players that currently are not in the 8-man rotation and see that some of them can potentially become rotational players. Of course that depends on whether they stay or transfer. Our present and future seems so much brighter.

  44. Yeah, this is a result of there being fewer elite teams and fewer really bad teams compared to lots of teams in the middle. Below is an illustration of the average difference in KenPom efficiency from one team to the next, with the X-axis representing their KenPom rank, and using a 10-team rolling average. For teams ranked, say, #20 - #300, there will be more movement from game to game because those teams' efficiency margins are closer to each other.
