Enjoyed watching Creighton miss 3 free throws in a row in crunch time after being 20 for 20 up to that point. See if Providence can hold on.

  9. Nebraska Cornhuskers (22-9) vs Indiana Hoosiers (19-13) **B1G Quarterfinals** Date: Friday, March 15th, 2024 Time: approximately 8:00 pm Arena: Target Center, Minneapolis Broadcast: BTN Indiana Info Head Coach: Mike Woodson (3rd year) Location: Bloomington, Indiana Conference: B1G Nickname: Hoosiers Line: Nebraska by 4.5 Typical Rotation Depth: 8 KenPom rank: 85 Nota bene: Starting SG Trey Galloway is expected to be out in this game having suffered a lower body injury With Xavier Johnson back in the lineup, Indiana has now won 5 straight Fred Hoiberg is 0-4 in the B1G tournament Fred Hoiberg vs Mike Woodson is a matchup of former NBA coaches Indiana Center Payton Sparks was a teammate of Boogie Coleman last season at Ball St. Indiana boasts one of the tallest lineups in D-1, clocking in at #3 in KenPom's average height metric. Nebraska's secret scrimmage foe Utah is #2. Mackenzie Mgbako attended Roselle Catholic HS last season, playing with Simeon Wilcher. This is the same HS attended by CJ WIlcher and Jamarques Lawrence. Nebraska went 2-0 during B1G play vs the Hoosiers including a 85-70 win at Assembly Hall where the Huskers righted the ship after a 2nd half swoon KenPom most used lineups 4 0 Xavier Johnson 6-3 200 Sr 3 Anthony Leal 6-5 200 Sr 21 Mackenzie Mgbako 6-8 217 Fr 5 Malik Reneau 6-9 233 So 1 Kel'el Ware 7-0 242 So 8.1 Player to watch: Malik Reneau While not as dominant as Trayce Jackson-Davis, F/C Reneau has taken over as Indiana's go-to scorer in the paint while also ranking 2nd on the team in assists. Does have 3pt range. Is consistently a threat to foul out. Player to watch: Mackenzie Mgbako The 5 star freshman has become the Hoosier's main 3pt threat, shooting 37.8% from 3 in conference play. Player to watch: Kel'el Ware Another former 5 star, Ware transferred from Oregon and has started at the 5 for Indiana where he's arguably been their best player. Ware looks like a lottery pick at times but sometimes his motor doesn't match. Player to watch: Xavier Johnson Johnson is a mixed bag. At his best you have a pesky defender who can hit outside shots and make flashy passes for easy baskets. At his worst he's jacking bad shots and making freshmen type turnovers. It's worth noting that Indiana has won 5 straight since he's returned to the lineup and is 13-6 this season when he's played. Others to watch Freshman guard Gabe Cupps is mostly just bringing the ball up the court and shoots at a Benny Parker like rate. 6'8" 215# Miami transfer Little used Anthony Leal has played his way into this limited rotation and makes good basketball plays. Anthony Walker is nice depth but he's yet another post player who doesn't take outside shots. Guards CJ Gunn provides some end of the bench shooting. Nebraska comes in looking to make the semi-finals for the first time and potentially increase their NCAA tourney seeding. The Huskers have been spreading out the minutes and seem to be getting stronger as the season progresses. Expect to see some live legs to start this game. For the most part, Indiana is a great matchup for the Huskers. Despite their height, Indiana is a remarkably poor rebounding team. The Hoosiers are careless with the ball and inevitably make poor basketball plays. By default, they're going to concede 3pt shots and Nebraska has certainly hit them against the Hoosiers this year. While Nebraska tends to defend without fouling, the Hoosiers tend to draw a lot of contact so it's something to keep tabs on. The Hoosiers have been one of the worst FT shooting teams in the country though. It's likely that both team will go on runs this game. The important thing here and going forward is that Nebraska doesn't let a team bury them with one. Between the rest and being overlooked for conference accolades, expect Nebraska to come out with an edge. Think the Huskers win comfortably here. Prediction: Nebraska 78 - Indiana 65 View full article

  11. The NCAA Tournament in person is always a thrill for me. My first was in 1988 when Lincoln hosted. Murray St upset N.Carolina St. and Jim Valvano, Pittsburgh had “send it in Jerome” Lane and Kansas had Danny and the Miracles. Vanderbilt upset Pitt, Kansas beat Murray and Kansas beat Vandy in the finals. And Utah State had a great dance team. I was hooked. I went the next year to Reunion Arena in Dallas seeing the Doug Smith Missouri team defeat Harstad-Gallagher Creighton. I have been to New Orleans for the 1992 Final Four where Chris Weber called for a timeout that Michigan didn’t have and Dean Smith would light up a cancer stick the minute North Carolina left the Superdome floor. I have been to sights as Oklahoma City, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Denver, Kansas City, Austin and San Antonio. The most fun has been the Alamo Dome in San Antonio because you could walk to the bars and restaurants of the River Walk. The Brickyard area of OKC was a fun location. However, the new TV schedule of games makes the break between sessions so small you have no time to take in the local scene. The best arena was American Airlines in Dallas and the Alamo Dome is far superior to the Super Dome. I love the battling Pep Bands, the cheerleaders and dance teams and talking to fans from all over the country. At OKC one year, Bucknell didn’t have a Pep Band so Northern Iowa which had just won in an upset put on Orange Bucknell T-shirts and represented the Bison that a Bucknell representative handed out to them before the Kansas game. Arizona and Memphis fans might be the most loyal. Derrick Rose of Memphis might have been the best player I witnessed. I have lot’s of great memories of the tournament. I highly recommend attending at some venue. Tickets are more and more difficult to acquire and much more expensive.

  14. I didn’t watch the semifinal today but Pewaukee won by 20 against a very good team. Norm is gonna like this Janowski stat line. 31 pts, 10 reb, 10 ast, 1 TO, 2 stl. They will match up against Kon Knueppel’s team in the championship for a storybook ending to those two’s middle/high school careers. This would be 4 state titles in a row for Pewaukee. Prior to Nick’s freshman year they hadn’t won one ever. Wisconsin high school basketball is the real deal. Edit: Articles out there say he scored 28 points but the box score I read showed 31. I don’t know, doesn’t matter.

  18. I don't live in Nebraska and I haven't in years, but I do work for the university. That being said, I don't think much of the governor getting involved in this when in his statement he notes he doesn't fully understand or know Alberts' reasons for leaving. Lots of people are implying Trev didn't feel like he was getting the support he needed from higher ups. In what capacity? He was just given a massive raise and contract extension. Could it be he doesn't like being questioned about certain things by the higher ups (such as the findings in the report released last fall about his time at UNO, and the Scoggin lawsuit)? I will always be suspicious of people who expect blind loyalty. As far as the change in leadership, we employees knew for a while Carter was leaving. It takes time to hire a solid president. Heck, it takes forever to even hire decent faculty in my department (often 1 or 2 years minimum, because it's difficult to recruit people to live in Nebraska). My main department was without a chair for almost 4 years. As far as the BoR being slow, they are actually still on course given past hires. The last thing NU needs is to hire the wrong person as president.

  20. My working theory is sometimes he compiles these at night and in lieu of reading back through it, posts it here to see if someone flips up mistakes as opposed to doing his own editorial work. Cynically, I sometimes wonder if he purposely does this because he craves attention. Regardless, expect an upvote if you find one of these Easter eggs.

  21. Because the topic has been broached: Our personal NCAA tournament histories. As a high school senior, I attended the 1980 regional in Lincoln, and saw both Missouri and Louisville (over K-State) win. As a senior at UNL, I attended the 1984 regional first round. Kansas and Illinois State won one-point games against Alcorn State and Alabama. As the University of Miami beat reporter for the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, I was able to choose which sub-regionals and regional to attend, so I covered the first two rounds in Atlanta, where Oklahoma and Louisville emerged. I covered the East Regional in New Jersey, where Duke beat Rhode Island and Temple. I covered the Final Four in KC, when KU and OU went off for 100 points in the first half before KU pulled away for the national title. The next season I was the Sun-Sentinel's U of Florida beat writer, so I watched CSU upset the scandal-ridden Gators in the first round in Dallas. After the game, I saw Alex Chilton perform at a club in Deep Ellum. I skipped the regionals that year and headed straight to Seattle for the Final Four, where Michigan beat Illinois in the second consecutive single-conference final. I haven't been back to an NCAA Tournament men's game.

  23. yes, there always is. always! But I do accept* TA's explanation that this was the basis for it. Three times in my own work history (once inside it and twice having a view from outside but very close up) I have seen organizations in a prolonged state of leadership instability. Many positions at multiple levels of management being occupied by people in an "acting capacity". It's a toxic environment with superiors in "lame duck" status and therefore being unable to really be sure that people with comply with the directions they give. People wondering if they really have to be taking direction from a superior bc they wonder how long he or she will even be there. Employees wondering who their new boss will be and those in the "acting capacity" not sure that they will be appointed to the position permanently and, if not, if they will have jobs to return to. It can be a real mess. *accept it as being true and accurate even if incomplete. But I still think he had a responsibility to put the enterprise and his staff above his personal interests. He was a rare island of stability in a very unstable ocean and his leaving only accentuates the instability.

BUT: I've found a nice in between this year, I'm going to my first march madness, I'm ponying up for Omaha tix for all the Thursday sessions. And it turns out my dad and brother (who have been at a handful of home games this season too) also got tickets and will be seeing me that weekend at some of the games! This is awesome. I'm only in my 30s but I can relate to a lot of what you've said, Dave + others here. Really excited to jump at the chance to go to a tourney the huskers are in, but I've also never been to the ncaa tourney in person yet. Gonna be fun whoever I see in the Omaha pod. GBMFR

The short answer is adjusted efficiency metrics from KenPom.com. It's worth noting that in their analysis, this pattern held true no matter what "bin" of KenPom rankings they were looking at (kind of a "top-to-bottom" commonality in this 3-game behavior).

I think of a good example of getting top players too play here is just look at what FH tried doing with the mens teams. He got top tier talnet and all they waanted to do was play hero ball.. Also look at what Connie had in Shepard, how did that work out?

Put me in the camp of a PSU team on its third late evening game in 3 days. IU seriously thinks they have a shot at dancing and their 5* athletes are still 5*. They’ve looked really good at times. For PSU, Baldwin played 39 minutes last night and Hicks 35. Two other starters played 29 and 27. They very well could have a few guys with 60+ minutes since Wednesday and we’d be fresh. It’s close and I’d feel good about either draw. Because of that, I’m taking the team with more minutes on their legs.
