Andre Smith RIP
HuskerCager and 6 others reacted to HuskerBB for a topic
Just saw this. Really sad to hear as Andre was truly a Husker basketball legend. Loved watching him play - he was one who really enjoyed the game. One of my clear Andre Smith memories is of him sitting on the bench after we had clinched a win and just having fun watching the scrubs finish the game. Have to also say he was also a master of "dirty play" - he would often give someone a little shove or elbow when the ref wasn't looking and then when the other guy retaliated and got called for fouling Andre he would just give the opponent a knowing smile and go the the free throw line. A couple of Andre's teammates - Jerry Shoecraft and Eric Williams have lived in Lincoln a long time. I bet they have some great Andre Smith stories. Wish they would jump on here and share. Just looked at that 1980-81 roster - Andre's senior year and my freshman year at NU. That team had alot of my husker favorites. Andre and Mike Naderer as seniors. Jack Moore, Jerry Shoecraft and Ray Collins and Juniors - and two of my all-time Husker favorites - Greg Downing and Claude Renfro were sophomores on that team. Great memories !7 points -

#11 Nebraska Cornhuskers (16-15) vs #14 Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-21) ** BIG TOURNEY ** Date: March 8th, 2023 Time: 8:00 pm Arena: United Center Broadcast: BTN Minnesota Info Head Coach: Ben Johnson Location: Minneapolis, MN Conference: B1G Nickname: Golden Gophers Mascot: Goldie the Gopher Shirt Not to Wear: Gold, Maroon Line: Nebraska by 5.5 Typical Rotation Depth: 7+ KenPom rank: 222 A couple of Famous Alumni: Kevin McHale, Bobby Jackson Other: Blaise Keita is a game time decision The last time Nebraska defeated the same team three times in the same season was Rutgers in 2016 A slight home court advantage for Fred Hoiberg and Nate Lenser who were both part of the Chicago Bulls operation before joining the Huskers Nebraska won the first meeting at the Barn in OT behind 22 from Derrick Walker, 18 from Juwan Gary, and 17 from Sam Griesel. Jamison Battle paced the Gophers with 20 while Dawson Garcia had 19. Less than two weeks ago, Nebraska won the rematch in Lincoln thanks to a fast start. Sam Griesel led the way with 19 while 6 Huskers finished with double digit scoring. KenPom Analysis: It's bad. However like Nebraska they tend to defend without fouling. Player to watch: C Dawson Garcia Garcia has two double-doubles this season and they're both against Nebraska as he's been able to dominate the boards. Defending him without fouling will be key for the Huskers Player to watch: F Jamison Battle Minnesota's leading returning scorer is a threat from both levels; shooting at a career low percentage from 2 and 3 KenPom most used lineup PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 55 Ta'Lon Cooper 6-4 195 Jr 24 Jaden Henley 6-7 200 Fr 1 Joshua Ola-Joseph 6-7 215 Fr 10 Jamison Battle 6-7 220 Jr 3 Dawson Garcia 6-11 230 So 26.8 2 55 Ta'Lon Cooper 6-4 195 Jr 4 Braeden Carrington 6-4 195 Fr 10 Jamison Battle 6-7 220 Jr 21 Pharrel Payne 6-9 255 Fr 3 Dawson Garcia 6-11 230 So 13.9 Others to watch Morehead St transfer PG Ta'Lon Cooper has struggled with his shot in the B1G; 6'9" 255# Pharrel Payne is a rim protector, can pass, and is an inside bucket; has become more of scoring threat Joshua Ola-Joseph is a high-energy 3 man; converts at a high percentage inside the arc Freshman Jaden Henley has worked his way into the starting lineup and brings a ton of size at the 2 Dartmouth transfer guard Tarus Samuels has fallen out of the rotation Freshman shooter Braeden Carrington has struggled against high level opponents UNL Game Notes Probable starters for Nebraska 5 Sam Griesel G 6-7 30 Keisei Tominaga G 6-2 10 Jamarques Lawrence - G 6-3 0 C.J. Blaise Keita could play and Hoiberg was hoping they could throw him out on the court The Skinny: How much fight does Minnesota have left? Will this be a battle the entire game for the Huskers or will a quick start steer the Gophers towards ending a disappointing season? Nebraska needs to win this game to try and secure a spot in the NIT but with 4-5 wins necessary to make the NCAA tourney, the Huskers will want to conserve energy as much as possible. Will be real interesting to see how both teams start out. It'd be nice to have Blaise Keita in this one given the size of the Gophers though despite the size they aren't a strong rebounding team. A few minutes just to get his feet wet for potential future games would be optimal here. Oleg needs to play better than his last game vs Minnesota where he racked up 3 fouls in 6 minutes. Look for Nebraska to have space in the paint as Minnesota will have a man following Keisei wherever he goes. As long as the Gophers don't get hot from outside, Nebraska should be able to handle them. Let's keep the good times rolling. Prediction: Nebraska 79 - Minnesota 68 View full article3 points

Man, this is sort of a tough one for me. Spoke to him a number of times and was very affable off the court, while being a tough son-of-a-gun on the court. May he rest in peace. As a side bar...if the NCAA tournament was the same then as it is now, we would have had some tournament wins. Just saying...3 points -
I will always remember his wave to the basket after a made free throw. That 1977-78 team, which was Andre's freshman year, was fun to watch: Carl McPipe, Brian Banks, Andre Smith and a couple of Lincolnites, Kurt Hedberg (yay, Spartans!) and Terry Novak (boo, Rockets!), along with Hastings' Mark McVicker. They went 22-8, 9-5 in the conference, beating KU 62-58 at the Devaney Center. The season ended in the second round of the NIT at Texas.3 points

Yeah, in the senior day picture for d-bag Conner with the whole family, there was a younger, high-school aged looking kid who shared a strong resemblance with Conner/Patrick. With Nebraska's luck, FranCon Sr. will head to Noter Lame, take the dork Patrick with him, recruit and sign the younger one, then Noter Lame will join the B1G and the Huskers will be subjected to 6 or 7 more years of McCaffery whining.2 points -

I will say this about Chucky, he was the ultimate team player while in HS. He only took over a game if and when required. He was coached well. To this day I will continue to say that he was the best player to come out of Nebraska that cycle. I agree with Norm, we desperately need a replacement for DW. Fred had that same type of player at ISU and that type of player is both hard to come by and a match up nightmare for opposition teams.2 points -

This is almost exactly my thought, minus the inclusion of the actual transfer names. Assuming Keisei is gone, I can envision JL, RL, and JG starting along with two new transfer starters - PG & PF/C. If we land the impact transfers again and most of the role players do return (WB, BK, SH, CW, QP, etc), I think we have a very solid team that is very capable of finishing in the top half of the conference.1 point -

Minnesota would have needed to beat Michigan St at Michigan St which is pretty unlikely. Had Michigan St won that game, they'd still be the number 4 seed due to tiebreakers. Had they lost that game, then Iowa gets the first round bye. Thus, it actually worked out just fine!1 point

This video shows some big-time skill for a 6'6 kid. He would probably be more advanced next year if he'd played this year rather than sitting out, but make no mistake: Ramel Lloyd will have gained from this year. He will not start out the season like your typical true freshman. So, with that said ... PG (pick 1): Q? (not convinced Q will be that guy) SG/Wing (pick 2): Jamarques, CJ, Sam H., Keisei?, Ramel Bigs (pick 2): Blaise, Wilhelm, Juwan, Oleg, Eli, Denim? (not sure where to put Denim) I have a feeling we'll keep all or most of the guys we'd like to keep and clear some room for some portal opportunities. Just my feeling.1 point -
If we can get good, consistent pitching, there’s no reason we can win a lot of games. There are a few mid-week tests, but outside of Iowa and Maryland, our conference seems pretty sub par this year.1 point

This team can swing it for sure - Anderson is now hitting .512 and that's facing quite a few southern teams so far that usually pitch it pretty well. Can't imagine he'll make a run at Ken Harvey's .478, but there are some really bad teams on our schedule & he has a ton of protection in this lineup, so he has a good chance to hit over .400. Also team is hitting .323, which would be the 5th best all time, and is slugging .566, which would easily be a school record, if they keep it up. At 1.73 HR per game - if they play 55 games and keep up that pace, they could beat the school record of 93 in 1985. Having a chance to take a run at that record is incredibly impressive considering how many seasons college baseball was gorilla ball.1 point -

The whole post season thing is good reward if you want to call it that, for the team, and the fans. Would guess UNL might "buy" a home game for the WNIT if it's possible to do it. (If we have a proper seed/situation to get the chance) We might be a higher seed in WNIT so..... NCAA's are another story in our case, without a very high seed, almost no chance for home game..... even if we got in for some reason. The last two losses may have cooked our goose. Actually hope the men might get into NIT too. They need the boost for some confidence and pride for all their work. They've came pretty far this year. Hardly a top 25 team, but have made positive strides.1 point
