CJ Wilcher is N

New #Nebrasketball commit @CJWilcher is a big addition on his own. But it also just so happens that his younger brother, @SimeonWilcher, is a 5-star PG in the 2023 class.

I asked CJ when he would start recruiting Simeon to NU.

C.J. can make shots from all over the floor, whether in the post, off the catch or off the dribble,’ he said when the four-star initially signed.”

I wonder if Ben Johnson leaving was an issue. What almost certainly was an issue was that Senior SG Nate Johnson was going to return for another year and Wilcher had mostly ridden the bench until he went down with an injury.

Documentary about CJ's HS. CJ featured quite a bit. Seems like a great kid, and his coach speaks very highly of him - keep in mind his coach has coached a ton of D1 guys.

CJ Wilcher is a class of 2019 shooting guard out of Newark, NJ.  Clocking in at 6'5", the sophomore to be was rated in the top 150 coming out of high school and regarded as an elite shooter.  Wilcher saw limited playing time this season until senior SG Nate Johnson went down with an injury. It's probable that Johnson's decision to come back for another year led to Wilcher looking elsewhere for playing time.  Matt Abdelmassih had originally offered Wilcher at both St John's and Nebraska.

 

At this moment Wilcher would have to redshirt unless granted a waiver. However, he might be immediately eligible if the NCAA puts a one-time transfer exception rule into place.  Wilcher will have 4 years of eligibility left.

 

This is a 2 for 1 commitment, since his brother has to have Nebraska way out front.

Nothing in certain but this damn encouraging.

Everyone seems really excited. Is it because of his younger brother? Because so far, it would appear that CJ was overrated as a 4-star in high school. What am I missing? Sorry to be pessimistic, here come the downvotes

It might not look like it on the surface, but this potential starting lineup is a significant upgrade in talent if he gets a waiver next season.  CJ is a true SF and can shoot it.  He's perfect at the 3.  

If little bro joins and Bryce doesn't declare early, we could have the best backcourt in the country in two years.  Insanity.

Depending on if there are any other additions to the roster, this is what I would expect to see, if Wilcher is immediately eligible next season:

Definitely possible.  I think it depends on Banton's weight.  He needs another 15 pounds to play the 3 or 4, and even then it might not be effective.  

The nice thing now is we can field a lights out 3pt lineup if we feel like it:

Lat

WB

^^^ that's what a 5 out roster usually looks like on offense with a little more weight at the 5.  I don't know how often we'd use it, but Bryce could go crazy with 4 other legitimate 3pt threats outside of the lane.  P&R with WB and 3 solid shooters could be glorious.  Really, you could swap Trey or Banton at point and still be effective with a drive and kick approach.  You could also use Shamiel at the 5 and do the exact same thing with him.  3pt shooting matters so much.  

It's just nice to see options, and long term, that's what Fred is setting up.

Overrated 4-stars still have a place on our roster right now.

He would almost certainly be more effective than Lat especially if he got up to 225 pounds

I almost wonder if he could play the 5--that's what I'd pitch to him.  Point center.  His post defense isn't bad and he's a good rebounder.  Then you could keep Lat on the court.  Use him like we used Roby.  There isn't a 5 who could stay in front of Dalano at 225.
