Currently watching a team who got rid of a decent coach— one that had decent results.  Under their first year head coach, they are 15-2, 4-1.  They are ranked, and are currently beating a top 10 team in the country.  Wouldn’t mind having that guy as our coach but it won’t happen.

I brought up some concerns when Tim was let go about how we didn’t know how green the grass would be on the other side.  I was told with Tim that we can’t be scared of the unknown.  We have to just do it if it’s time.

Well I’m tossing that back out now.  We can’t be scared of what’s on the other side.  If it ends up being time, then it’s time.  So, while we’ve been better, while the team is much more fun to watch, and while I'm going to cheer hard the rest of the way for us to get there, I'm sticking with my post season or bust minimum expectation for this year.

FTR, I don't agree with @Craytonhater's reasoning. But if you follow his reasoning to its logical conclusion, the only coach we had this century who left the program BETTER than he found it would have been Barry Collier.

But I think Craytonhater is wrong.

Tim Miles inherited a program that won 12 games the year before he arrived. And only 4 games in conference. In his 2nd season -- and I DON'T CARE IF IT WAS LIGHTENING IN A BOTTLE, IT WAS STILL AN NCAA TOURNEY APPEARANCE -- he lead us to the Dance. His last two seasons, we made the post-season both years. He turned the program over on a high note. He delivered the most conference wins in a single season in the history of the program his penultimate year here. Two consecutive post-season appearances before he was shown the door.

Oh, but there wasn't much talent in the cupboard when Fred took over, so they say. Hey, friends, let's be honest, FRED BLEW THE CUPBOARD UP! He wasn't planning on keeping any of Miles' guys. He was going to fill his own cupboard with his own players and he liked Thor and Dachon Burke and had the room so he let them stay. It wouldn't have mattered who we might have had. If you recall the discussion at the time, it was noted he did the same thing when he took over from McDermott at ISU: he flipped the roster and basically started over from scratch.

So, don't tell me about the shape of the roster at the time Fred took over as though it's some excuse for what's happened since. Matt A was hired to go out and fill a roster and that's what he did. It's not like Fred showed up in September and had to hit the floor with whoever was still there from the prior regime.

Anyway ... if you agree with Craytonhater that he left the program in worse shape than when he arrived, fine, but I look forward to your compelling explanations.

Good god!  Not even worth replying.  You're gonna die on that hill.  Your boy is in FS1 now.  Im sure you're watching....

100% with you on all of that. Also, in the 13 win conf season, I've seen bad Husker teams have bad seasons in down years. I don't care what state the conference was in when it happened, it'd never been done before.

That said, the roster was a mess after that season. Nobody was coming back, there wasn't much coming in. Miles had been in survival mode. That last season was a win or else situation. At the beginning, he was winning. At the end, it was or else. He was recruiting to survive, not sustain. It would have been a big job to make that next season competitive.

I agree he did what was not done before, but again do you just settle and have a defeatist attitude?  There is no reason this univ shouldnt demand more from one of its revenue generating sports.   Too much money and support to keep a guy cause he's funny and qwirky and a salesman.  Ultimately it needs to come down to wins and post season wins.  My opinion, feel free to disagree, but I expect more results overall after several years.

Miles is a good coach.  Bad coaches don't take a team San Jose State to possibly their 3rd winning season in the last 30 years.

Possible 2019 - 20 roster included Xavier Johnson (a 5 year power 5 starter) , Mika Adams-Woods (a part time starter in the AAC), Isaiah Roby (a player who had 10.1 PPG in the NBA).

Xavier was gone cause Kenya was gone.  Roby most likely would of been gone due to NBA.  The last wasnt a player that was going to elevate the program above the previous year IMO. As far as SJSU, lets wait to see where that goes.  Again, its SJSU.  If he was such a good coach why is he there?

And you accuse Norm of dying on a hill.  We get it.   But in case we don’t, change your name to Miles Hater.  Your Miles sucked posts out number your Creighton posts 10-1.

Again show me where I said he sucked.  I said he hit his ceiling.  I wanted him to succeed but it didnt work. The fact that so many want to defend this guy just shows how bad this program has been for so long and we hang on to mild success.  And yes Crayton sucks.  Red state and beat a team that everyone locally thought was a final 4 team.

I won't touch on the Miles stuff, because well it's in the past and it already happened. I was adamant he should get another year, but he didn't meet the expectations Moos set forth. (Moos is more to blame for all of this than anyone. He didn't do Miles or Hoiberg ANY favors with program oversight.)

For the current iteration of Fred and who we should look at, unsure. Best case scenario for me is Fred and the team figure it out because going through another coaching search in the same year as UT, UK potentially (Cal rumored to go to UT due to no AD oversight), Georgetown, and all the musical chairs that happen every year does not leave me excited. This program would be near the back of the line. It would be like that every year and that is not me saying it should prevent Trev from going to someone else, but it will be a factor, even if it's a miniscule one.

My expectation going into the season for them was 14-16 wins. 9 right now with 13 games left. This is probably the most fun team I've seen come through since the 17-18 team, and I am just enjoying the ride in the meantime. Sam Griesel is one of my favorite players to come through here, and not due to skill, but his fight and passion for this place. I do think the formula for success is now in place, but we need to sprinkle in more offense. Hard nosed defensive team that grinds, with next year having some more TEAM ORIENTED offensive guys like we have this year.

To entertain this thread, I'll circle back to Medved from CSU and Jeff Linder from Wyoming. I believe Norm mentioned Grant McCasland as well from North Texas last year. However, one thing I'm noticing is the Jerome Tang success at KSU. He was never a HC in the D1 level, and was an assistant at Baylor since 2003. It makes me think about long standing assistants at the P5 level that are looking to move up to a HC opportunity. Would have to be the right fit, but it's something I would consider.

You've said it ad nauseam in this and other threads where your point came across the first time.

The fact that you want to defend your position this badly just shows how unaware you are that people are tired of hearing the same thing over and over again.

If this trend continues .... I'd put Leon Rice of Boise State on the list. He's won 20 games (going to count this year) 9 of the last 11 years and won 19 another. Only one losing season during that period. Boise is not a good basketball job, and he's made the most of it.

P5 assistants are a crap shoot. For every Jerome Tang, there are dozens of flops. I'd also avoid a guy who gets hot this year and wins a game in the NCAA tournament. I would instead go with a head coach who has a record of sustained success, even if it's at a mid-major. I was really high on the Steve Pikiell hire because he had been a consistent winner at Stony Brook. Gregg Marshall did the same thing for years at Winthrop and was fabulous at Wichita until ...

There might be other guys like Rice, but I just noticed they were doing well again this year and thought, "damn, that guy can coach."

What's done is done and I could argue both sides on whether Miles should have been let go or not.  Keep in mind that Miles was here 7 years and he made post season in 3 of them with 1 NCAA appearance and 2 in the NIT.  However, it really should have been 2 NCAA appearances as we won 22 games and went 13-5 in conference and ended up in NIT.  Either way, that is about half his time here, he made it to post season.  Assuming most people would take that at this point.  And let's not forget that No-Sit Sunday happened under his watch.  One of my favorite quotes from Tim after he was hired was that if the person behind you tells you to sit down, you just tell him Coach Miles said I don't have to.

Like Tim or not, he was the one and only coach who made it cool to be a Nebraska Basketball fan

Defeatist? c'mon man.

I think the Nebraska job is actually a lot harder than people want to admit.

Kenya was gone because Miles didnt get the support from the AD's office. If Miles' job was more secure he may have been persuaded to stay. The bigger blow was Lewis had made great inroads with instate recruits. Very likely Chucky would be in Lincoln, not Madison. Sallis had a great relationship with Miles. With the caliber of offers he ended up getting, perhaps he still leaves the state, but TM and ML were in a really good spot there too.

This guy.... I wish I could go into a job, spend a bunch of money on infrastructure and labor, then run away with more money than I started with.

You should try to find a Management position in any local, State or Federal government

The main difference between KSU and NU this year is Keyontae Johnson, not the coach.  And Fred had Keyontae on campus ready to commit to NU, but the AD wouldn't let him.  Fred had for all purposes "out-recruited" the KSU coach for Keyontae, but Fred was sabotaged by his own athletic dept.   Is it unfortunate that it took 3 years to get to a point where Fred would have had a legitimate tourney team (with Keyontae)? sure.  But still, in year four, Fred had Keyontae and enough pieces around him to have a legit tourney type team, and his own administration pulled out the rug and now is judging him and possibly firing him, and all of us fans have to watch the success of KSU and only wonder "what if".

Go ahead, celebrate that one time we "out-recruited" someone head to head in 4 years.   Bunch of damn apologists, make me sick.

Was Johnson's denial an example of Trev "Moosing" Fred? or was it legitimately about the liability with his medicals or whatever? One I can wrap my head around, even if I don't like it. The other, would be really disappointing.

I saw it reported that the medical staff didn't "have time" to check him out as thoroughly as they needed, so they couldn't clear him. Whatever that means.

"Given that Nebraska only recently got involved in pursuing Johnson, there wasn’t enough time for the Husker staff and medical team to thoroughly evaluate his condition and the potential consequences of continuing his basketball career."

That's what Washut initially reported, but now he says Johnson was cleared by UNL's normal team of specialists. He was also cleared by Fred's personal doctor - I'm assuming his cardiologist.  The AD overrode all of that.

The way it was phrased, it sounded like the AD office sought another medical opinion outside of the usual specialists. Robin didn't say who. Weird that they switched it up, but also an abnormal circumstance. I understand a University not wanting to risk it.

Imagine Fred Hoiberg, a former NBA player who suffers from a heart condition that caused his career to end, bringing in his personal cardiologist to examine another basketball player who suffers from a heart condition, that doctor clearing said player and then the athletic department basically saying “nah, we can’t take the chance. We don’t want that liability.”

Looking at you Trev
