This Mast thread sort of got sidetracked by Wilhelm. I enjoy reading everyone's opinions, but the bottom line is that young players can make all of us armchair experts look foolish from year to year as they develop. The last player I remember who "didn't belong on a Big Ten roster" was Tominaga, and we all know how that turned out (I can only wish KT returns for another year). So, how about dropping WB evaluation for the present and returning to Mast, who seems to be a great fit for next year.

  2. Tom Goehle's leaving was covered for like one day on the on line sports sites for both the Lincoln Journal Star and the Omaha World Herald. However neither paper had any coverage in their e-editions or hard paper copies about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! More evidence of lack of women's sports coverage by either paper while we are being force fed Kool Aid articles on men's sports every day in multiple articles!!!!!! Why not have better women's sports coverage as well!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Who would they ask who might have any kind of an answer? Amy is notoriously controlling about the degree and timing of any program information. Soundbite tweets with platitudes, but nothing revealing or insightful. I suppose that is her right, and she’s certainly is not the first or only Coach to treat the media, and indirectly the fans, that way. I suppose Goehle was, as were certain injured players, “day to day”.

  5. I hear ya. Until proven otherwise, Sam has earned his spot in the eight man rotation. He made some insanely clutch plays for us last year. Very much a glue guy in my book. Dude has some serious heart.

  7. I'm just not an offseason person. But I like this offseason. Is it enough for us? Idk. But who cares. Let's go!

  8. I wish Coach Goehle well. He certainly was a loyal assistant. I am frustrated about lack of information about the transfer portal. It would be nice to know if we are even looking at possible transfers or if we prefer to stand pat.

  9. I think WB can learn a whole lot from Mast and still has plenty of upside. Remember WB is a pretty gifted passer. If he can become a little bit more of an offensive threat (improve outside shooting and 1v1 skills) I think his passing will be more effective. He needs to add 20lbs and decide to be a full time 5 though. He has no business athletically playing any other spot. I think he can be a very serviceable backup C with a serious summer.

  10. There weren’t a lot of us at the time my man! But that’s okay….last offseason was a pretty dark time so I get the negativity during that stretch. For me it’s not about being right or wrong about the kid. I am just so happy that things worked out where Tominaga had an opportunity to show us what he could do (and take advantage of it). What is great is that everyone loves Keisei now, and I hope he feels that love and it leads him to playing one more year in Lincoln. He’s one of my all time favorites to play in Lincoln.

So far in the 2022-2023 + season, Nebraska Basketball is undefeated against the Axis of Evil: Creighton, Iowa and Wisconsin. GBR!

Perhaps. If you remember the end of this past season we even had Keisei in the high post setting picks. The versatile nature of Fred's offense allows pretty much anyone to play any role. I sort of think that is what we are hearing from our incoming players. They seem to enjoy the outlook of playing in Fred's system.

  13. Hmm, it was in my e-edition of the LJS. That is sort of wierd. I'm seeing a number of tweets and re-tweets as well. Regardless, there is a bit of strangeness in the timing of his departure. Yes, there is quite a bit of activity right now with Men's basketball recruiting, the finalization of the Women's Australian recruit, softball, baseball, Women's bowling championship, Men's golf setting a record, track and field events, new Big Ten Commissioner along with high school events popping everywhere; but perhaps one of the writers could have broke loose to simply ask, why now and what is next. https://cornhuskerswire.usatoday.com/2023/04/15/nebraska-womens-basketball-assisant-retires-to-pursue-mission-work/

  14. Since Mast is comfortable playing on the arc I wonder if Hoiberg might play Gary in Walker's high post spot and let him be a driver/screener so his man can't clog the paint and let Mast fire away from three if his man doesn't go out and guard him.

Quote from Hoiberg “Rienk has a skillset which I think will flourish in our system,” Hoiberg said. “Offensively, he is very crafty around the basket while he is also comfortable stepping out to the 3-point line. He has been one of the best rebounders in the Missouri Valley Conference for the past two years and comes from a program that won its conference and played in the postseason last year. Rienk will provide an immediate impact in the frontcourt for us next season.”

  16. Wow. Was not expecting this. After that Parker F slow-play 3-time disaster, I'd forgotten that high school kids can be decisive and not all of them are afraid of commitment. This is Nice.

I'm still in favor of recruiting the 11th and 12th OT from the FB team to come in and set some screens. Doesn't matter the fouls, but some B1G guards will become a little reticent to play tight cover.

  18. He sort of seems to be that hard nosed gritty type that the home team loves and everyone else can't stand him. Perhaps he will somehow have a six year career here.

  20. The American Tominaga? Doesn’t really have a ring to it…. I am thrilled (shocked?) how well the last week of recruiting has been going. I hope we can keep the momentum rolling into next season.

  21. What the heck is a noncommitable offer? That’s an oxymoron. An offer by definition is something that can be accepted or rejected. If it can’t be accepted then by definition it’s not an offer.
    2 points
  22. Sounds like a bunch of sour grapes. Not sure how Reddit guy knows the Iowa State offer was non-committable, but they just hosted him on an official visit so that doesn’t seem accurate. Wisconsin actually does a pretty poor job of recruiting their own state. They probably give good effort, but talented kids don’t want to go play in that offense. Their own players don’t even really want to (Chucky). It appears that he has never visited Wisconsin. Maybe he just hates the Badgers as much as we do. I’m gonna go with that, because that makes me like him even more.

  23. An absolute stud and the type of player we just don’t get, ever. Wish he could sign his LOI today because the blue bloods will be calling next year.

  24. It would also be appreciated if there were some mention of Brady or Dillard. I still wonder why they didn't, at least, sit on the bench and support the team, during home games.

Nick Janowski, a highly touted 4 star basketball player from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, has officially committed to play for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard announced his decision on social media, expressing his excitement for the opportunity to join the Huskers and play in the Big Ten conference. In his junior season, Janowski averaged 22.3 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game, and 4.1 assists per game while shooting 47.6% from the field and 41.4% from beyond the arc. He was named first-team All-State in Wisconsin and was a finalist for the state's Mr. Basketball award. Other scholarship offers for Janowski include Georgia Tech, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, USC, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin. Janowski's commitment is the first class of 2024 recruit for the Nebraska. 28. The first article I read about him listed him at 6’2” so that height was in my mind. I see others refer to him as 6’3” and rivals at 6’4 so if he is a legit 6’4 then I agree that is good size for a 2 guard.

  29. Both teams play within Wisconsin's "Woodland West" division in which Nick's team (Pewaukee) went 11-1 to Kon's team's (Wisconsin Lutheran) 10-2. For what it's worth, it appears that Nick's team beat Kon's team fairly handily the three times they faced each other this season. In the first game at Lutheran, Nick dropped an 18-8-8 stat line. Kon scored 33 to Nick's 21 in the second game and in their state playoff game they finished with 14 and 13, respectively. Nick has better ball-handling and polish to his game, and is more athletic/better-conditioned. He usually had the assignment of guarding Kon whereas Nick was never guarded by Kon unless they ball-screened and switched. Kon is a great scorer and rebounder and is still a good defender, just seems to rely a little more on his length. Will not be fun facing him if he does become a Badger. Here's a video of the second contest between the two teams if you want to see some full-game action:

We will certainly be able to run some if the Sam g post uo stuff with him. Most college guards are not well versed at checking post ups. He doesn’t have the brute strength and size of sam but is much more skilled down there and a better touch on the step backs.

Observation #1: Fred seems to like lefties. Observation #2: Matt Thomas, II? Observation #3: I really like the way he simulates shooting an arrow every time he hits a deep shot and jaws his opponents after scoring over them rather than getting back on D. /snark

  37. Also, I like Quaran and want him to be like what I imagine. Last offseason I felt like the only guy that really liked Keisei, but my eyes told me he could be a player if the team played like a team. There were flashes there. With Quaran, I am really high on him but have zero to base it in other than body language and demeanor.

I watched a video with a badger podcaster that hosted a fairly knowledgeable recruiting analyst to discuss him. He said that while he can step over and play the point, his best stuff will come at the two because of how good he is at moving without the ball and shot hunting.

  40. If I'm looking at Marquette and Wisconsin's scholarship boards correctly they seem pretty full up. We, on the other hand, have 2024 scholarships to spare. The jury is out on how good the non-Matt A HS recruiting is

  45. I don't really want to get in the middle of a pissing contest but what difference does it make if Alberts had anything to do with it or not. For whatever reason a player or coach leaves you need to replace them with a better one. Take a step up the ladder with the replacement. Amy now has that chance. Anxious to see how it comes out.
    1 point
  46. Do you have proof that Alberts told Amy to upgrade the coaches? if not one shouldn't be making these statements. For all we know coach is tried of coaching and wants to do something else.
    1 point
  47. As he was our primary 4-5 coach hope Amy looks to bring in someone who has a more proven record of developing them.
