How would we have done without injuries to Bandoumel and Gary?
HuscurAdam and 4 others reacted to HuskerBB for a topic
This is the point I wanted to make in reading this thread. There is no way to know for certain what our record may have been without the injuries. But I think it is clear that Bandoumel and Gary were a huge part of instilling the defensive culture that we still bring to the floor. Had Bandoumel not get hurt we likely would not have seen the emergence of Jamarques Lawrence into a really valuable player - but at the same time I am pretty certain that without Bandoumel on the team Jamarques would not be the player he has become. Even though we have done well without them on the floor I don't think that diminishes the huge positive impact that Bandoumel and Gary had on this team.5 points -
That was the first year we had season tickets at BDSC. I encountered Andre for a few years after he graduated, and he always seemed to be a soft-spoken nice guy who took care of his daughters. On the court he played a lot like Derrick Walker. RIP Andre.4 points

I will always remember his wave to the basket after a made free throw. That 1977-78 team, which was Andre's freshman year, was fun to watch: Carl McPipe, Brian Banks, Andre Smith and a couple of Lincolnites, Kurt Hedberg (yay, Spartans!) and Terry Novak (boo, Rockets!), along with Hastings' Mark McVicker. They went 22-8, 9-5 in the conference, beating KU 62-58 at the Devaney Center. The season ended in the second round of the NIT at Texas.4 points

From Saturday Tradition website: Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year Keisei Tominaga, Nebraska Our Sixth Man of the Year is technically no longer a Sixth Man, but since he’s started less than half of Nebraska’s games, I’m deeming the Japanese Microwave eligible. In 8 games since being inserted in the starting lineup, Tominaga is averaging 20 points per game and the Cornhuskers are 6-2. If Tominaga had earned the starting nod sooner, he’d likely be second team all-B1G. Purists may insist on Iowa’s Payton Sandfort for Sixth Man of the Year, but we are happy to be impure.3 points -

Jamarques Lawrence received his first Freshman of the Week award from the Big 10 after averaging 15 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in a loss vs Michigan St and a win at Iowa. In the game vs Michigan St, Lawrence finished 7-10 including 6-6 from 2. Versus Iowa, Lawrence hit a career high 5 3pters, finishing 5-9 from the field. Lawrence is the first freshman player of the week since Bryce McGowens in 2021-22. View full article2 points

Man, this is sort of a tough one for me. Spoke to him a number of times and was very affable off the court, while being a tough son-of-a-gun on the court. May he rest in peace. As a side bar...if the NCAA tournament was the same then as it is now, we would have had some tournament wins. Just saying...2 points -
With bith healthy, I believe we end around the same place as we did. If only 1 was lost, I think we end up worse than we did. It took losing both to really change our playing style. With only 1 gone, I think we would've stuck with how we were trying to grind out games, but been less effective at it. Losing both forced our hand to modify because our roster was no longer able to play that way effectively.2 points

cornfed24-7 and one other reacted to Norm Peterson for a topic
So this comment is kinda interesting to me. I think, oddly enough, we probably did about as well without them as we could have hoped to have done with them. Not to knock either of them, but it really forced some other players to step up and those guys rose to the occasion. The comments about Gary >>>> Breidenbach are well-taken. Wilhelm has some off-season work to do, for sure. But we are most certainly better positioned for next year given the development that certain players have received, that they wouldn't have gotten sitting on the bench behind Bandoumel and Gary. So, what at first had me thinking we might not win another game really has turned into a blessing in disguise. Backcourt guys with eligibility: Keisei CJ Lawrence Hoiberg McPherson Lloyd Jr Frontcourt guys with eligibility: Keita Gary Breidenbach Kojenets Dawson Rice We have two spots available right now. That will probably change as the transfer portal opens. Based on historical trends, you might expect 2-4 players to enter the portal from our end. If that were the case, we'd have somewhere between 4-6 new players we could bring in. If we can keep CJ, Lawrence, Hoiberg and Lloyd Jr and add a solid transfer PG, that would actually give us a pretty competitive backcourt. Maybe if you can find a wing who could be an efficient scorer from all 3 levels, you'd take a guy like that. If we can keep Gary, Breidenbach and Kojenets as well as bringing in Rice, we'd still need to find a really good big man to make up for the loss of Walker, but it would be doable. It's not beyond the realm of possibility. This is not an impossible task. Not too big of an ask. It's not that many pieces for us to be able to field a reasonably credible team next year.2 points -

How would we have done without injuries to Bandoumel and Gary?
HuscurAdam and one other reacted to Fullbacksympathy for a topic
I honestly think we'd be attempting to make the NCAA tournament with Gary on the court. Gary won us a few games with his insane effort. He's an absolutely elite defender and rebounder and very serviceable offensively. We haven't really replaced his impact with anyone. Bando's production has definitely been caught by the combo of Keisei/Lawrence/Hoiberg. I love Bando, too, and I give him a ton of credit for turning us into a serious brand moving forward with his defense/toughness/attitude. I just don't think it's quite fair to lump Bando (loved his effort) with Gary. Gary was arguably our best player before his injury on many nights, in my mind. He was second in rebounds, first in steals, second in blocked shots, fourth in scoring. He also had a knack for clutch hustle plays when we needed them most. I cannot wait to get him back next season.2 points -

uneblinstu's postgame chatter: vol 15, ed 31: at Iowa
CanadianHusker and one other reacted to MichHusker for a topic
I think what's really important is that not only are teams putting their better/best defenders on Keisei, but they are putting length on him (Battle, McConnell, Murray off the top of my head). Allows for other guys like Griesel to get more favorable matchups from smaller defenders2 points -
Here's an important factor noted in today's Omaha World-Herald: "Iowa used future NBA lottery pick Kris Murray to follow Keisei Tominaga everywhere." Think about that, too: Tominaga is everywhere on offense (running hard and cutting hard . . . all the time), and Iowa's best player is following and guarding him everywhere . . . all the time . . . then trying to be a force on offense too. During the last stages of yesterday's game, that NBA lottery pick is worn down and lacks his normal punch on offense. Keisei Tominaga may have served one of his most-important roles as a Husker, yesterday, while scoring his fewest points in a very long time.2 points

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m gonna miss Griesel so much. We gave up 20 some offensive boards today but play after play and game after game this year he’s busted his ass for us on the defensive glass. So happy he decided to come back home for his final year. He’s a shining example of what this programs foundation should be built on.2 points -

I like it! Minny is Minny, we should be able to take them down. UMD doesn't play really well away from home. Indiana would be playing their first game and we know Teams sometimes struggle scoring in game 1. Would, I think, be our toughest road block. Then you likely get Illinois/Northwestern... not super intimidating. It's a long shot, but I don't really mind our shot.1 point -

I think Bando for all the good his defense brought his offense left a lot to be desired and the emergence of lawrence and keisei in his place makes his loss not as big, however Gary on this team I think would fit very good (good rebounding defense and doesnt need the ball)1 point -
I'd assume that Chucky is staying in Wisconsin but just looking at numbers I'd surmise that Chucky's would look better playing at Nebraska where he wouldn't be taking so many mid-range jumpers. While you'd like him to have more length I'd assume that his mental game would make him work in whatever defensive scheme we decide to implement next season.1 point

just an FYI that most people don’t consider in gambling recreationally. They get you with the eye candy of that 250-1. It almost always ends up being better off to simply play it game by game. Play Nebraska on money line against Gophers. If we win play profits plus original stake in Nebraska money line second game. Rinse and repeat all the way through and it would likely pay closer to 350-1 at the end. You also get the added benefit of aborting the mission at any point, or going less along the way to hedge more easily and without paying more juice and potentially funding the book with significant money to be able to make a large hedge bet.1 point -
So that would suggest that we are somewhere between 13th and 16th team out of dance if chalk holds in conference tourneys. Can that be made up with wins over Minny Maryland Indiana and NW that would have us 9-1 in last ten? Selection folks have shown tendencies to be lazy in regards to Sunday conference tourney games in the past. I think we are four wins away from dance.1 point

I’m definitely a fan of what both Gary and Bandoumel did for us this year. If I could only choose one of them to come back next year, I’m choosing Gary. I think Ramel Lloyd has the potential to be a solid replacement for Griesel. If we can find another solid replacement for Walker, I think we definitely have a chance to make the tournament next year.1 point -

Went to Civic auditorium way back when to see Peter Frampton in concert. Gary Wright was his opening act. Once he got through Dream Weaver, he went downhill fast drawing more than a smattering of boos. I don't remember how, but my group was right in front of the stage and speaker. My hearing has never recovered. I also remember seeing a lot of (ahem) female flesh that was directed to the main act.1 point -

In addition to the responses so far, the best thing I've seen all day is how Iowa assigned their Star, to follow our evolving Japanese Terror, Tominaga, around the floor All Game, so he didn't have anything left in the gas tank when they needed him to win the game at the end.1 point -
