I came back after focusing on other things this Easter weekend to find I had created something of a stir. I understand why some took my comments as a statement about players OFF court behavior. I in no way meant this. I don't know any of these players and have no real knowledge of how they behave off the court. They might be model citizens. Any aspersions engendered by my comments were unintended and I regret that. What I intended to convey is how weary I am of how the game is played ON the court. The hacking, pushing, elbowing, shoulder throwing, plowing over defenders, climbing over backs, hand checking, throwing players out of the way to get a rebound, moving screens that knock defenders down, etc. is what I mean by "thugs in sneakers." I have no objection to playing physically tough basketball but I want it to be clean basketball played within the rules. For example, UConn plays REALLY good basketball and is still a physically imposing squad. Illinois does NOT and Terrance Shannon is NOT a very good basketball player. He is an excellent linebacker with a good shooting eye. Shannon and SO MANY like him in the game today are what I mean by thugs in sneakers ON THE COURT. If referees would call the game as the rules are written instead of just making stuff up as they go, basketball would be a lot more fun to watch, IMO. Hope this brings some clarity.

Reminiscent of NEEbrasketball in 1996.... also finished the regular portion of the Big 8 regular-and-conf.-tourney at 16-14, then rattled off 5 wins in-a-row, often on the road in hostile environments to snag the National Invitational Tournament championship. Only wished that particular NU team had figured it out in the conference tourney like N.C. St. -- they could have done some special stuff way back when. They had a bunch of ballers on the Husker roster. GBR Always.

  10. Played quit a few pickup games with Kropp as I was a student at Kearney State in the 80's. The first time I remember a friend was dividing up teams and he put all the good players on one team and me of course on the other. I told him I didn't think the teams were fair. He said, "oh they are fair, that's Tom Kropp with you." We won of course. Guy was an amazing shooter. He could pull up from deep and bank it in with a soft touch. For the younger members a bank shot is one that goes off the glass before it goes in the basket. He had that Bird/Magic/Jordan quality that he was great but would also make the players around him better.

I can imagine being an NC State fan right now. Finished grad school there in '93. I don't know what happened to light a fire under them to start them on this run. They weren't a bad team during the regular season, just extraordinarily mediocre. Lost most of their games by less than 10 points - could never quite get over the hump. I certainly thought they underachieved and this post-season run seems to back that up. It's been quite enjoyable - especially disposing of the Dookies twice and the Tar Holes once along the way (the vast majority of people in NC are Duke and UNC fans, so playing 3rd fiddle or lower to both gracious and arrogant fans for the past 30 years has been quite annoying). Facing Purdue is going to be tough because they haven't seen a dominant monster like Edey (I guess you can say that about any team facing Purdue). NCSU's bigs tend to get in foul trouble and they're only 3 deep. Might have to run some lightly used guys off the bench to absorb some fouls. Also, I think Burns will have a real hard time attacking Edey. His quick spin moves might get him around Edey, but since they measure his vertical with sheets of paper, Edey will probably be able to just block his shots from behind. Burns is a real good passer, but that's usually from a double-team. I don't think Purdue will double him much. But, Burns only had 4 against Marquette. Different guys have been stepping up during this run.

Really a bummer. JL was one of my favorites and I hope he does well. But I'm afraid he'll be one that realizes the grass isn't always greener. There aren't too many coaches out there that will give him the long leash and ultimate green light that he had here.

A few years ago I told her I received a job offer in another town and we would have to move. I set it up by telling her I had something important to tell her when she got back from the store. My daughter started crying when I told them and I got slapped when I said April Fools. I keep it simple and painless now.

Only one Q4 game left (hopefully) and all of our conference games should end up Q3 and higher -- but Iowa, c'mon. This is pathetic even for you. Iowa & Indiana are hovering near the cut-off line, so we need them to play a little better -- hopefully just enough to stay out of Q4. For a northern team, our Q2 record is extremely impressive. It sucks that our Q1 opportunities are so limited, but that's the nature of being a northern team. Someone in the SEC will play 30+ Q1 games. It's just how it goes. If we keep dominating in Q2, though, the committee will take notice. Q1 matchup on tap Tuesday, at least for now - adds a little more spice to the rivalry. Almost feels like with how long Walsh went on Saturday, the coaches made the decision to move Walsh out of the midweek starting spot to get a 3rd lefty they trust out of the bullpen on the weekends. We'll see, though. Maybe Walsh starts and has a tight pitch count. If he doesn't start, it's probably Horn Tuesday. I do love Walsh pitching in that big ballpark, though. Ohio St righted the ship over the weekend after a rough couple of weeks, and it won't be a gimme this weekend at home. Need to go at least 3-1 overall to keep pushing toward a potential B1G title and a potential home regional. Also it appears the NCAA selection committee is going to use the DSR rankings on the team sheet this season. These rankings try to incorporate margin of victory - slippery slope for baseball, I think, but it appears they're going to try it. (Maybe the NCAA has been using it in the past, although I can't find anything that indicates that.) NU was 16th in these DSR rankings before yesterday. There isn't a huge difference between DSR and RPI that I can see. Maybe some of the smaller schools like Dallas Baptist and UCI that play in weak conferences can take advantage of it by blowing out conference foes. I'm not sure the difference is enough to convince our coaches to start trying to run up the score, but who knows. https://d1baseball.com/diamond-sports-ranking/

  23. Last year it was Elite 8, and a foul away from the Final Four. He acquitted himself pretty well. Aurora's proud of their own. Tom Kropp will remain #1 in my book. Baylor's a close 2nd. Both are NBA ballers in their own right, they both traveled a different path. I wouldn't have chosen Kearney St. (Kropp) or So. Dak. St./CU (Scheierman) but that's their decision to make and live with, ultimately. I'm certainly not sad that CU didn't attain their N.C. goals. I'll go watch B.S. #55 in the pros, he's an elite passer with Jokic-like vision, yet not a seven-footer. It'll be interesting to see which team drafts him, I think he'd help Phoenix, for instance, since they lack a PG.... to each their own, I can't say I'd blame Baylor for pickin' that eastern Omaha squad since Freddy came off of a 7-win, 7-win, and 10-win seasons in succession. Now, it's over and done with at the college level. Maybe the next "B.S." kid will *want* to play in Lincoln, Nebraska, let's hope so after a 16-win and 23-win seasons back-to-back. GBR Always.

  34. It's pertinent to the B.S. #55 story, Forbes magazine wrote a recent story and chose to mention that Scheierman was the 1st player from Aurora to play Div. 1 basketball. Well, yeah, but Tom Kropp played in the freakin' NBA, lol. That deserved at least a tiny mention of one of the greatest to ever do it in the STATE OF NEBRASKA from the same little community of Aurora, Nebraska.

  35. That's an interesting combination of players: both are from Aurora, and both played college basketball in Nebraska--but not at the state school (i.e., "The University," as we used to call it back in Tom Kropp's day). Tom Kropp is among the all-time best Nebraska athletes, but he is relatively unknown.

  37. I don’t mean to imply that he would not be a good fit with our team culture. I do mean to suggest that culture and fit should be priorities. And given his limited production at Iowa State, I wouldn’t just jump on the “he’s a former five star; therefore, he must be really good” bandwagon. I would expect the staff to do their due diligence in trying to assess what was going on with him that he didn’t succeed in Iowa State and isn’t sticking around.

I seem to remember Coach Miles getting ejected on something pretty similar to that down in San Antonio - wasn't his 2nd technical for being out of the box when he was trying to get someone's attention that the shot clock wasn't running? Something like that. Can you imagine being an NC State fan right now? The heater they've been on since starting the ACC tourney is something every sports fan dreams of experiencing. They wouldn't even be here if UVa didn't completely botch the final minute of the ACC semis to let NC State bank in a 3 at the buzzer to force OT. Adding in what they did in the ACC tourney just to make the NCAA field, NC State to the Final Four is one of the craziest postseason runs of all time. As if that wasn't enough for the fans, they got to beat UNC in the ACC final and knock Duke out in the Elite Eight. Also kind of strange in the NCAAs where the guards always seem to rule the day to see two huge dudes in Edey and Burns completely dominating. Going to be a war in the paint next weekend when those two collide.

Think back a year ago to the 2023 portal. There was a kid from Aurora who could have chosen to come back home. Could have been a statewide hero. Instead, he chose otherwise. No one west of 42nd Street gives two squats about him. It's so sad. He could have been part of a celebration this state won't see until next year. It will happen next year.

  44. Kropp is often considered the #1 athlete to ever play in the state of Nebraska. He was drafted by every professional league there was back in the day. He's a personal friend, and a guy who you can shoot the shit with, totally unpretentious, and thoroughly a killer on the court, even in his 50s with bone-on-bone in his knees. We have an annual Alumni Weekend and he'd dominate that until Father Time took over. That dude could shoot it, recall the "Picket Fence" of Jimmy Chitwood from Hoosiers. Then he was head coach and leader at UNK for 25+ years of his college coaching career, much to little or no fanfare. He kept teaching & leading with great aplomb. He's an amazing basketball savant. Aurora loves Tommy, he's a genuine dude, although he was born in G.I.--lol!!

  48. The mid major as new juco is very real. There isn’t a huge adjustment to be made if you were the man on a mm team and move to p5. 1. You’ve already played a ton of p5 schools, probably held your own, and now have a chip on your shoulder/confidence. 2. You’ve developed way more skills on the court as you were getting tons of minutes at D1 speed as opposed to spot minutes at the P5. 3. There’s a lot of good fundamentals taught at the mm level because they have to in order to stay competitive. More team guys. So when Bama imports them, they have culture and humility when they arrive. JUCOs have easily suffered the most from transfers/NIL. Lastly, we can complain all we want about the way things are now, but this system benefits Nebraska so much it’s hard to fathom. I don’t want anything to change. We can get dudes here now.
