During warm ups, I yelled at Peltz and started hitting my elbow and yelled "Use the elbow tonight!!" He looked at me, gave me the nod and smile, and started hitting his elbow too. He took my advice, and made a great tackle on Craft!8 points -
You can say Rey did nothing in the first half - but at the beginning of the game OSU made him the focus of their defense with Craft chasing him all over. That is what opened up those driving opportunities for Webster and Biggs. Later shifted Craft from Gallegos to Biggs and Webster and we probably should have done a better job then going to Rey. Overall though even if he is not scoring other teams are aware of Rey and know that he is the one player on our team that they have to keep from getting open looks off screens.7 points

Mike Peltz taking a bullet for a teammate!
seaofred92 and 3 others reacted to PimpMario for a topic
I tried to move on to the PSU game but I want at least 1 more day celebrating the OSU win. Mike Peltz had the play of the game that had me cheering the most. Towards the end of the first half OSU had a fast break transition off a turnover and it looked like Smith wass going to foul their player going to the basket. Peltz literally dove in front of Smith, blocking the shot but more importantly drawing the foul so that his teammate didn't get his second foul just before halftime. It was a hustle play and it it was as heads up of a play I have seen in a while. I think I was the only one in the arena standing and cheering loudly for that play. Way to take the bullet for your team and teammate Peltz!4 points -

Lots of great things last night but the best to me: We played a solid game, but it didn't take anywhere near a perfect game to beat a Top 20 team. It didn't take 15 3s, it didn't take a miracle half-court shot, it didn't take a bunch of home cookin' from the officials, it didn't take one player going off for 30+. And we survived one of our worst turnover games of the season (17), survived less than 20% 3-pt shooting, survived a 10-minute trainwreck in the 2nd half, survived our only senior scoring 2 pts, survived Pitch having an off night shooting 3s, and still won without having to really sweat out the final minute. That's a good sign and should be a significant confidence-builder for the team.4 points -
The biggest difference between the student section in this game and Michigan was that vs Ohio St the student section contained students.4 points

I told everybody I knew that if we got one win in our first five we'd be ahead of pace. That said, it's encouraging to see that we have the talent to have been 3-2. Am I happy we are 1-4? No. But, if you don't think we are improving or making progress, I think you are not paying attention.4 points

It's nice to see that we are not insane fans...or that other fans are insane like us. One or the other. Here is the expected overreaction from the Ohio State fanbase from their Scout board. "This team is getting blown out by Nebraska. I seriously doubt this team makes the tournament. They are awful" "So this is what it feels like to be Nebraska basketball." "Nebraska is a is a tough team at home." - "Nebraska's no tougher than any other bad team at home. Good teams will walk out of there with a win." - "Can we please stop saying Neby is a good team at home. They are second to last in the BIG. Have we sunk this low. Good lord we are bad this year. It's almost, well is, embarrassing." - "Thank you, somebody said it.....home or road we should be demolishing this team....well, i thought that at the beginning of the year anyway" "The refs are going to screw us, no doubt...." "Ok, how does Nebraska get guys that can drive and create their own shots and ohio state can't find those players?" "Is it just me or does every other fan base sound way louder than ours? I'm getting sick of it! Don't give me "the we're a football school" because so is Nebraska. Too many fans sitting on their damn hands when we're at home. Nebraska is absolutely feeding off the fans. Wish ours were the same way." "I still don't understand how Nebraska and other bad teams can have guys who can score but Ohio State doesn't have a single player who can create their own shot and put the ball through the hoop. Hopefully there are a few in the stellar classes the next few years" "I'm not going to freak out over this loss and think they're not a tourney team. Michigan almost lost at Nebraska - probably should've lost but Petteway missed the shot that he hit against OSU late in the game - and the Wolvies are a tourney team (it's not like it's a cakewalk playing in Lincoln this year, it's a serious challenge unlike the past couple of years), and I myself guaranteed this would be a much tougher game than the one they had a couple weeks ago with the Huskers." --- Funny stuff considering they beat us by 31 points 17 days ago. 3 weeks later, we apparently have better scorers than they do. When we were playing with confidence last night, we looked like the better team. We hit 2-13 from 3 at home and turned it over 17 times and still beat the #15 team! We can still play so much better! The future is bright.3 points

I'd be interested to know what little things (no pun intended) that you think Parker does that doesn't show up on the stat sheet? He's not a great shooter, he can't be used to double team, he constantly gets beat off the dribble by the guy he is guarding, etc.... I'm not saying he doesn't put forth any effort as I know he's paying as hard as can but just curious what things you think he does that don't show up on the stat sheet? I don't agree that he "constantly gets beat off the dribble". Benny is a pretty decent onball defender.3 points -

Who let all the Ohio State fans in tonight? I'm going to have some words with some people in my section next game. IF they show up and don't sell their tickets to the other team's fans again. #tickedoff Had you told me before the game that Biggs and Petteway would each turn the ball over 7 times tonight and then asked me to guess the final point spread, I would probably have picked Ohio State by 15. How the hell? Once Terran got going ... Craft got in Deverell's head tonight. Dev needs to let his play do the talking for him. When Ohio State made their run, our offensive spacing was about as bad as it's been all year. It's kind of funny seeing Pitchford try to establish posting-up position 15 feet away from the hoop. Leslie Smith has really quick hands for a guy his size. Fantastic pick up for us when we got him. Very under-the-radar for the kind of player he turned out to be. Good thing we loved the rim tonight because we weren't getting along very well with the 3. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, but can you imagine if we'd managed to finish business with Michigan and at Purdue? Let's see how this week goes, but it appears this young team might be finding its mojo.3 points -

OFFENSE: A Nebraska shot 50% from the field simply because they finally figured out a way to attack the basket and get to the rim. When they weren't scoring from the field, they were often getting fouled, and the Big Red won the game because of this, converting on 77% of their foul shots (20-26). That included 9 of their last 10 in the closing minutes of the game. Wow, was the old Shavon Shields back or what? Tonight's Player of the Game poured in 18 points on 6-12 shooting while also grabbing a team high nine rebounds! While Terran Petteway was mostly bad during the first half and early into the second, turning the ball over EIGHT times, he still finished with 18 points and had a number of key baskets and free throws to seal the game at the end. I give him much credit for fighting through the struggles. Also, Tai Webster was very good tonight - again, the numbers aren't eye popping (9 points, 1 assist and 2 turnovers in 28 minutes) but if you watch the games, you consistently see him improving and flashes of what he WILL become. DEFENSE: A Let's first of all say that Ohio State DID miss a number of open looks. Still, Nebraska was EXCELLENT tonight on the defensive end, forcing 15 turnovers and holding Ohio State to 40% from the field and 62 points. And, had OSU not fouled at the end and greatly extended the possession total, they would have been legitimately in the mid-50's. One key thing; OSU connected on a paltry 28% from downtown (6-21) with two of those coming in the last minute. I continue to like the zone and think it will help win NU more games as the season progresses. Ask Northwestern how it does against better athleticism. REBOUNDING: A Nebraska out rebounded the Buckeyes 33 to 27 and held OSU to just six offensive boards (four of which came in the first half). We already mentioned Shields' effort on the boards, but also a "shout" to Petteway (5 boards), Leslee Smith (4) and Deverell Biggs (4). Nebraska just played "tough" - even Walter Pitchford, who only officially had two rebounds in 20 minutes, was boxing out with authority and going up strong to help secure boards. BALL HANDLING: D 17 turnovers, including EIGHT by Petteway and SIX by Biggs? No, no, no. This is the sole reason NU went from up 14 with 1:50 left in the first half to losing by three in the early stages of the second half. This included a 14-2 OSU run at one point. This is a couple of consecutive bad turnover games for Petteway - this needs to improve, obviously. COACHING: A Coach Miles went small after seeing OSU do so and it proved effective. He continued to mix in some zone at appropriate times and massaged his way through the turnovers by pulling guys at key stretches when they were struggling (Petteway and Biggs). Also, kudos to Miles for playing David Rivers down the stretch, who responded with a key block, some big rebounds and converting at the foul line. He didn't have too much pride to give the kid another chance and play him in key moments. OVERALL GRADE: A Sans the turnovers, this is a straight "A" report card! I don't remember the last time we had one of those. TREMENDOUS win for the Huskers - how do I know that? Many casual friends/fans I haven't heard from in ages texted me and e-mailed me after the game, excited. Believe me, the wins DO matter, both with casual fans and recruits. Loved seeing Jacob Hammond so excited on Twitter, too. But let's be honest - while the casual fans/recruits enjoyed it, even we, the biggest diehards, needed this. Getting beat down is only fun for so long and this puts us all on cloud nine. Now, Nebraska MUST MUST MUST win at least one more game this week or this game goes for naught. Win 2 of 3 this week and you still have a realistic chance at the NIT. Win this next one at Penn State, a game Nebraska ALWAYS loses in recent years (win a huge game, then drop a completely winnable game next), and you're making REAL progress. PLAYER OF THE GAME: SHAVON SHIELDS 2013-2014 PLAYER OF THE GAME RESULTS: TERRAN PETTEWAY - 8 TAI WEBSTER - 2 WALTER PITCHFORD - 2 LESLEE SMITH - 2 SHAVON SHIELDS - 2 DEVERELL BIGGS - 1 This post has been promoted to an article2 points

Mike Peltz taking a bullet for a teammate!
throwback reacted to Norm Peterson for a topic
I wonder if, through our Scarlet and Cream colored glasses, we see that as a "great hustle play" but others would see it as shady and dirty as the Gibbs flying suplex of Petteway earlier this season. I still stood up and cheered when it happened! I don't see it that way and I don't think any reasonable basketball fan of neither team would view those plays in the same light. Peltz was able to get down court fast enough to make an actual play on the ball -- not even a hard foul -- that prevented an easy layup and forced Craft to get the points at the line instead. Two things separate what Peltz did from what Gibbs did: 1) not a "hard" foul; and 2) actual play on the ball. The two aren't even comparable in my opinion.1 point -

I don't know how many others on here attend UNO hockey, but they turn out all the lights about 3-4 minutes before the 2nd & 3rd periods begin and show another "pump up" video, just before the teams return to the ice. Might be tough to duplicate that in hoops, because the visitors could come out of the locker room and warm up at any point - OSU was out pretty early last night to warm up, I think with 5 minutes left before the start of the 2nd half - and I'm not sure they want to run their layup drills in the dark. But maybe a specific song and/or something on the video board that's only played before the 2nd half begins would help?1 point -

Yep... their lack of offense is made up for by other players this year, and that is why these guys are like the glue for the team. Something that is usually unnoticed, but holds it together. Like the Dirty Work reference.1 point

We are in the 200 section and I was standing and cheering and yelling st the refs more than I was sitting. In state kids?
REDZONEDAN reacted to hhcmatt for a topic
If we don't know who they are, then they probably aren't very highly touted player anyways. If we're talking about three kids from the state of Nebraska that Miles spent time talking to before and after the game, it doesn't matter if they're nationally ranked or not. It matters and it's important....especially if you do want to land the future highly touted players from this state.1 point -

We recruit better than Ohio State, our fanbase creates a more hostile home court advantage, and we get all the calls! Are these just the standard gripes of every fanbase after a loss or what?1 point

1. I don't mind the storming the court but I hate to give OSU the satisfaction that beating them is something special. 2. Pettaway was the worst player on the floor for the first half and he came out and hit 2 of his going right, high off the glass runners in crunch time. I respect anyone that played that bad to not be afraid of failure and come out and want the ball in pressure situations. I've seen far better players wilt in those situations.1 point -

Long time stalker, first time poster..... I am not here to ruffle feathers to you "longtimers" that have dominated this board for years. I am a realist and not a person that likes to pump sunshine and drink the kool-aid. First post: Some of you dont know why it seems that JH isnt jumping very much on shots, short on her shots, not rebounding well? Maybe its because she is playing 37.4 minutes per game in Big 10 play. Last year she played 31.5 mpg and two years ago she played 33 mpg, and freshman year 31.1 mpg. That is a LOT of minutes for a player that mostly has to guard the other teams post player as well as being the "go to" player on the offensive end- running around screens/posting up. Unless she finds a pill that will give you unlimited ammounts of energy she will probably continue to not play as well throughout the rest of the season. Its too bad that we dont have any more depth to provide a 2-5 more more minute rest for all of these ladies. Also.... EC is playing 38.4 mpg this year compared to 32.2 and 31.8 mpg the 2 previous years. HS is playing 34.4 mpg this year compared to 23.3 and 22.5 mpg the 2 previous years. RT is playing 40.4 mpg this year compared to 29.4 mpg last year. What does this all mean? We are going to going into a phase where it is super important to maintain focus on the task at hand while getting as much rest as possible. Remember 2 years ago at the Big 10 tournament when we had to play 4 games in 4 days? JH and HS got stress reactions/fractures and it really effected how they played in the NCAA tournament the next week. With all of the heavy minutes 4 of the 5 starters have logged this Big 10 season their practice time will be reduced and because of that the rest of their game might a little too. I sure hope that everyone will be patient with what happens to this team this year- there are much better times ahead of this program in the future, me thinks......1 point

True...but the ones that choose to sit down should be just as courteous to the ones that stand up the whole game. If you choose to sit down you may be blocked by those that choose to stand. Hopefully if there's some physical reason for sitting then the ones around you will observe and be respectful of that. However...if there is no physical reason and it's just the "we paid for these seats and we want to be able to enjoy the game" thing...then the people around who paid for those seats have the exact same feeling...and they choose to stand the entire game. feel free to ask them to sit down..if they do ok...if not...well let it go...because they have as much right to do what they want as far as sitting or standing.1 point -
This is a serious question, other seems to share you opinion so I will ask the board, why is 6 wins better than 4 or 2? Neither gets into the post season and unless we find 7 wins somewhere we are going to have a worse season record wise than last year. Because it is. Haven't you been watching the AT&T commercials? What's better? Better, or not better?1 point
