  1. Huge game for the Huskers. I mean enormous. For those who played the "short prep" card after Iowa, we have that advantage over Rutgers for this game. Must win game for Rutgers as well. Should be a war.

  3. History tells us then, we should probably face guard their guy who is 13% from deep on the year OR their guy who has “only” made 5 threes this year.

  4. Markowski's charge: AGREE It's a block, and is a foul on the defender. That kind of play where the defender undercuts a player in the air (at the last split second of the shot at the basket) is getting into the area where the shooter can be injured. B1G should look at that. If nothing else to make refs aware of how to call an incident like that. And...It hurt us in an important part of the game.

  6. This was huge Friday. Lose by 4-7 points, we drop, but not back into the 50’s. NET favors MOV so we need to blow teams out and avoid getting blown out.

  7. Amy is the type of coach that likes to hang her hat on defense. She has said so a few times. I can think of a couple of players where she said once their defense improves they will have more time on the court. IMHO it can come back to bite you. I know we have some players who are better on the offensive end, thinking Hake, or Nissley. I would rather see them spend more time on the court, knowing their defense can be lacking at times but the plus side they can score. Both are hitting plus 40% from three. When we look to go into the paint then we tend to do better from the 3 point line. We need both Potts and Alexis to be active in the paint as well as Jaz and Darrin. We really need to work on getting Potts more touches. Seems like she works hard to get good position in the paint and we do not look to get her the ball. Potts does a lot of her damage on the boards and second chance points. Which is great but I think it could be more from her. Again, just me two cents.

  8. Okay, this is slightly a stretch, John Sebastian was born in NYC. However, he graduated from Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey. There's something special at 6 o'clock. Rutgers can't say that since they're on Eastern time. GBR! I love the stereo separation! Takes me back...

  9. It's not just a matter of being a step slow (although that often is part of the problem). The problem is that once you get in to league, the coaching is better and the scouting is better (same with Creighton), and coaches have figured out how to attack this defense. In our defense, the off-ball defender ALWAYS helps in to the paint. This makes us susceptible to the swing pass or the skip pass. But in addition, the better coached teams in league play are positioning an offensive player behind Nebraska's off-ball defender to SCREEN him from closing out on the 3 point shooter. This is done over and over and over again. So even if the Husker defender was playing fast and with great effort, it is impossible for him to run through that screen and get to the shooter. Overall, I feel the coaching staff has done a good job and they clearly are trying to make the best out of the less athletic defenders on the team. But man, giving up wide-open 3 point shots from the corner over and over and over again does become a bit maddening.

    Nebraska's Defense

the last couple of years teams were hitting 34-36% against us. I think the 42% currently against us is a bit fluky with a chance to go down but it is what it is right now.

  11. The +/- boxscore statistics shows me that using that statistic is useless. Krull and Moriarty are basically useless on offense. With them on the floor we are playing 3 against 5.

  12. Man. I think you worded this articulately but there’s no way I’d change our defensive philosophy from the last two seasons. Teaching good m2m is about 75% help rotation, regardless of how extreme the help is. We’ve beaten two top 10 teams in the last two seasons with this sort of defense. I think it’s mostly awesome. It’s definitely a variant of m2m. Every m2m worth its salt has one on ball and four in zone after every pass. This version has extreme help in rotation. I agree with you that it’s difficult to sustain but it sure is a thing of beauty when it’s done right. I also agree about offensive tempo and intention. But I’m not sick of this defensive philosophy at all. I love watching it.

  13. Krull, and Moriarty are really in more for there defense than offense. Any points we get from them is a bonus. Stewart just does not seem right. Wonder if she has completely recovered from her ankle, and she has also been seem with a wrap on one of her thighs.

  14. Yes, and this may be a "must win" game for Nebraska's March Madness resume as road wins are hard to come by in the Big Ten.

  17. Yup - you start looking at the 7 road games we have left, needing a minimum of 2 wins (and 3 would be preferrable), this might be the most winnable. Can't let this one get away like we did up at Minny. 1/17 at Rutgers 1/27 at Maryland 2/4 at Illinois 2/7 at N'western 2/21 at Indiana 2/29 at Ohio St 3/10 at Michigan

  18. Kinda surprised by the anger and dismay from folks about this loss. This is NOT “same old Nebraska”. Same old Nebraska hasn’t ever been here, coming out to a half-dead road crowd after beating the #1 team in the country by 16 three days prior. ANY team - and I do mean any - was going have a letdown there. And there is not enough of a talent delta to overcome it. Teams come out flat. Lose on the road. Coaches get outcoached. It happens. It’s a 31-game season. And I have to tell you, there’s a 4-game stretch coming down the road that looks like an 0-4 deal (look at our schedule, you’ll see it). But that doesn’t mean we can’t still go 22-9 and be a safe tourney pick. So let’s all just keep our poo together. This wasn’t one of the games projected as a win, folks. Sure, you could say it was a “winnable” game. So is any game. Michigan St, Kansas St, Indiana, and Purdue were likely losses and went 4-0 against them. So let’s not lose perspective. We will give Rutgers a good game. They will be ready to go. I swear, some of you act like you haven’t been a masochist NUBB fan for very long. If you have, you should know better and enjoy the 13-4 start! GBR!

  19. So, New Jersey has a few more opitions for bands. I'm going with The Young Rascals, later known as just The Rascal. Sirus/XM played this song just about everyday on my drive to my jobsite. It just puts you in a good mood, The band was formed in Garfield New Jersey in 1965. Here you guys/guyettes go. Lets see what you come up with.

  22. If the stats are flawed for not giving defensive contributions fair weight, how is a larger sample better? Is anyone questioning Amy for starting and playing Krull so many minutes? Someone should point out her efficiency ratings (sarcasm, sorry). Like any stats, +/-, efficiency, or a basic boxscore, they don't tell the entire story. By the way, I do enjoy your opinions. Replies are thought out, civil, and not aggressive like some on this site.

  23. Message board overreactions both ways wear me out. That being said, teams are getting into the teeth of our defense far too comfortably on the road in the league so far. Just because we have some pretty good help concepts a lot, does not mean we don’t have to take giving resistance very seriously staying in front of our guy.

  24. Great description. When we are facing a team like Iowa that doesn't have a dominant center then there is no need to double down in the paint. If we are going to run zone then we needed to switch to 1-3-1, 3-1 and a chaser (chaser is best defender) or similar to protect against the 3. Either Lawrence or Hoiberg needed to be on Perkins (15 assists!) like glue to force the ball from his hands. The goal is to pressure the ball. I love our matchup zone as our base defense, however when we are getting beat at the perimeter we need to change it up to protect the perimeter.

    MINNESOTA GAME DAY THREAD

To prove your point you just have to look at their year long individual player efficiencies. Not good for 3rd and 4th year players. Krull 4 Moriarity 2. Our 4 other starters range from 10 to 19.

  28. Another SOS game. Only 9 points in second quarter!!! Shooting only 34%. No significant drives to the basket. A bunch of huck up 3's. Krull plays 27 minutes and does not score a point. Moriarty plays 12 minutes and does not score. Stewart plays 4 minutes and needs to be put on a milk carton. Geez! NIT team at best!

  35. I agree with everyone. Not prepared, lazy defense and rebounding, too many unnecessary threes being launched, crazy subbing, horrible calls, inconsistency (that I partially blame on the revolving door subbing).

  38. Oh, pal, it get s a lot worse. If you were paying attention, those were clearly illuminati wrist bands the refs were wearing and I also spotted the Grand High Poopoo clearly flashing had signals to the refs to ensure that the HUskers lose. But yeah, it's only a conspiracy "theory". I'd call it.....conspiracy fact. (runs away)

  40. Allick absolutely abused Iowa’s stud freshman. He was the only guy who brought his A game. Rice showed some nice flashes on offense but his defense showed why he doesn’t play more. He looked like a confused freshmen. He’ll figure it out with experience. Brice Williams is maddening. His defense is lousy. The frustrating thing is he has the tools to be very effective on D. When we tied the game up he basically turned it back into a double digit lead for Iowa. Anyways, it was a road game we were supposed to lose so time to put it in the rear view mirror.

  41. There's a difference between losing and getting blown out. That's where the disappointment comes from. While we have a great start we haven't played that hard of a schedule. Now we are in the thick of it. And this team hasn't shown us it's not the same old Nebraska. It's shown us it's not the dumpster fire that was Hoibergs 1st years. This team may not be the same old Nebraska team. But I'm not betting my life against that just yet

  42. I expected to go 1-3 in this 4 game stretch. We went 2-2 so we're ahead of the game really. In my mind Iowa was a "house money" game. Would be nice to win, but we've already exceeded expectations so losing is not the end of the world. Looking forward to the discussion of the next 4 @Ron Mexico

  46. We double the post and chase shooters off the 3-point line. All that adds up to being one of the nation's leaders in 2pt% defense. Yay us. Maybe Wisconsin should follow suit.

  47. Yeah, Creighton is 100% a scouting report defense where each game plan is tailored the opponent based on good shooters and poor ones. Nebraska looks to be playing the same way regardless of opponent. If this is the way they're going to play in conference, it makes sense to just work on it now even if they can win these games playing straight up. Try to get the rotations locked down and make it second nature.

    Nebraska's Defense

I think the lack of room protection is the biggest factor for running this style like you said. There's holes to any defense no matter what you run, but you make the defense work for the personnel you have. I don't love the double baseline, but if they are sound in rotations and don't jump on ball fakes (I've seen quite a few of those over the first two games), it could work.
