  1. I would agree there have been instances in past years of players not being held accountable, but I don't think that is what is happening now in regards to Sam and Wilhelm. Fred just has a fundamentally different philosophy than you. He wants players like Sam and Wilhelm to shoot 3s when they are open. In fact, he has stated publicly that he is instructing them to shoot more 3s. Obviously, we can all disagree with that philosophy when the shots don't fall, but this is judging the philosophy on the results rather than the process, which is not the best way to judge something. For instance, Wilhelm is currently shooting just 23% from 3, but that is the exact same percentage that Bando is shooting. If Bando had not got injured, I doubt anyone would be wanting Bando to be told he must make his first 3 or stop shooting. Dawson is currently shooting 36% from 3, but if I had to choose between Dawson or Wilhelm or Sam, I would take Wilhelm or Sam all day every day. Frankly, I am shocked whenever Dawson makes a 3, his free throw form speaks volumes as to his shooting acumen. There were times in that game that I also wished we would have gone inside to Walker more. But we can't do it every play. PSU started doubling him and Walker has been turning the ball over quite a bit lately. Walker currently has 6 more turnovers than anyone else on the team (Bando has 43), and Walker didn't even play in the first 5 games. He needs some space to operate. If Fred restricted everyone on the team except Keisei and CJ from shooting 3s, then opposing teams would quickly catch on to this and put even more defenders in the paint. You can't assume that if we shot less 3s that Walker (or anyone else for that matte) would continue to be just as efficient as before, because by not allowing them to shoot 3s the defense is allowed to adjust and play more in the paint. This is B1G basketball, opposing coaches aren't stupid. With that said, I do agree that CJ should not force things so much. He is more a catch and shoot player. His attempts at playmaking have led to way too many turnovers this season.

  2. Keisei is the only guy besides Walker in conference who can consistently make the ball go into the hoop. I shudder to think of what the last place offense in the conference would look like without him

  3. Again like I have stated before. I love Amy but Amy's teams will always be a middle of the pack team. I think its the way she recruits. Its perfect for a non power 5 team but I dont think the way she recruits fits BIG ten basketball. And then the whole subbing in and out ever 3 or 4 minutes and she always has a tendency to sub out the girls that were on a run or had just made a big play which in turn kills the momentum if you ask me. I cant really say one thing bad about her personally cuz I really love watching her but the recruiting and coaching style is not a power 5 program style.

  4. Well if you’re gonna go with all of that, maybe recruit better shooters? You can’t just stick to your “philosophy” when you don’t have the players for it.

  5. Wasn't it Carl McPipe who went into the Missouri student section in the late seventies? Also, didn't some of our football team sit behind the Antlers in the 90's to keep them quiet? I have no gripe with Tominaga. Who knows what the hecklers were saying.

  6. so much has dropped on Jaz since the Weidner injury. yes, Sam has definitely helped. however, huskers really miss that "trio". just seems like it has worn on Jaz somewhat. i know she is playing hard, though. she is pretty tough player.

  7. Just to add to Karl's point. Amy also has shown to stick with a plan even when it has shown to not be very effective. When you only score 14 points in a half, time to shake things up.

  8. Tall is nice, but they don't have to be 6 footers. Jaz, Sam, and Allison do just fine. Still, to play in the B1G at 5'3", it would take a special player. Maybe Kennedi is that player. Time will tell.

  9. Sam played 38 minutes. Walker played 34 minutes. That line-up was out there for a max of 2 minutes. Without Bandoumel, Gary, Lloyd, McPherson, Keita that line-up has a chance to be out there every once in a while.

  10. This is what I've been thinking. A lot. And Kojenets, too. Because, let's face it, Wilhelm is likely as not going to pick up two quick fouls in any first-half action he sees. And there's just nowhere else to turn for depth. Edited to add: Wilhelm is averaging about 6 1/2 fouls per 40 minutes.

  12. That doesn't really matter. Does Ramel want to burn a year of eligibility to play 12 games? Redshirting is a player's decision, not a coach's.

  13. Do you think we make the NIT if he burns his redshirt 2/3rds of the way into the season?

I have a problem with her on court style when she flinging f bombs at the Nebraska fans behind the Michigan bench when they played here earlier. Leigha Brown or Caitlen Clark. Who wins t h e award for most disliked player in the Big 10. I know they are both good but they do n o t have to act the way they do.

  18. Kennedi can play at this level, no question. That is if her healing and rehab continues to progress as anticipated. Yesterday we were consistently a 1/2 second slow and always failed to make that extra pass or defend their extra pass. Not sure how to fully explain that, but we were off. Add to that, Maryland seemed extra incentified. Perhaps they always do it, but they did not come off the floor in pregame. When the huskers came off, they continued to run drills. They had a mental edge, to go along with their clear talent edge. Not all is doom and gloom. We have some young and talented players. We had an off day. But there is zero need for a total overhaul. A few additional talented players will assist us to the next level.

  19. NUtball, you are 100% on the money with your post. And I’m sorry, I don’t want to ruffle anyone’s feathers, but that’s exactly why I can’t bring myself to get overly excited about Kennedi Williams signing to play with NU. Nothing against her personally - she’s a very smart and talented player. But at 5’3”, she will be at a distinct and undeniable disadvantage against opposing perimeter defenders who are in the 5’10 to 6’1 range. I realize she has excelled at LSW and is playing at an elite level, but there is a huge difference between Nebraska Class A high school girls b-ball and B1G WBB.

  21. Obviously having better shooters helps. But it also isn't that simple. Trevor Lakes absolutely torched the nets for 3 years of college ball at a lower level school. But in the B1G, he was helpless, both on offense and defense. I imagine Sam Hoiberg could rock in a game of horse shooting 3s, but it's a different animal in games at the B1G level. Keisei is an elite shooter, he shot over 49% on 3s in two years of junior college ball--but now is shooting 37% in the B1G. The defenders in this league are taller, quicker, stronger and faster and the coaching is elite. Nebraska is currently ranked #234 in number of 3 point attempts per game, so it's not like he is telling his players to fire away at will. I agree Fred dealt his own hand with recruiting, but he has to play that hand in the most strategic way possible. If only 2 players ever are allowed to shoot 3s, highly unlikely it would improve the overall scoring because the paint would become a perpetual traffic jam. No doubt we are all frustrated with the players lack of making 3s, but Griesel and even Wilhelm are decent shooters, and they should have the ability to make 30-35% from 3, which is just enough to keep teams off-balance. And player confidence is important, if a player thinks a coach is going to yank him the first time he misses a shot, that player will never thrive.

  24. We need to stop trying to lob the ball to the post when they are not open. Half the time it gets stolen or they throw it out of bounds. There is an art to making that pass. Too low or too high and it's stolen. Also half the time they do catch the ball they miss the bunny.

  28. My intention wasn’t to mislead or to portray him as a ball hog. There are plenty of high volume players who I wouldn’t label as ball hogs. I don’t think his (lack of) efficiency warrants him getting the volume of shots that he takes. Some of it may be what’s asked of him, but if you watch their games you see Gard often visibly upset with his decision making. He’s 36% on 2FG and that is quite abysmal. Nebraska doesn’t have a rotation player under 45%+ 2FG. And based on his basketball history and his poor FT%, his current 3FG% is an anomaly. We love Chucky.

  29. https://share.newsbreak.com/2vmyscst We all knew this was likely; but it still sucks...sucks for Bando, sucks for the team and it sucks for the fans. Sighhhh... Good luck with your surgery and recovery young man!!! We loved your time here.

  30. Your volume citation of Verge is misleading because Chucky plays more minutes per game than Verge did. His shot%, the % of his teams shots he takes while on the floor, is a quite reasonable 24.6%. That number in conference is 22.7%. (for reference, Verge was 28.9%). In short, he's not the ball hog you're making him out to be. Certainly doesn't matter though as I highly doubt he's leaving Wisconsin.

  31. Can we add Nate Oats to the list of "coaches we want but we're not going to get"? He's 4-2 against ranked teams (W: #12, #1, #1, #21; L: #20, #15) and 7-0 in the SEC right now. He was at the top of my list last time we were talking about vacancies and he's continued on an upward trajectory since then.

  34. tall, athletic players that can move (and score) give you a pretty darn good advantage, of course. however, shauna green at illinois has done a great job in her first year. these are her main players: 5'6", 5'6", 5'9", 5'10", 5'10", 6'2", and 6'3". they can harass the crap out of you, and, can play pretty good offense. i believe they are sitting at 6-3 in the big ten.

  35. I agree with this. Passing, turnovers, live or die by the 3, game management, lack of recruiting expertise (or effort), player development, roster management, etc., are ongoing issues. Either this staff finds another gear, or we have peaked. Should Trev be looking for another HC?

  36. It was Carl McPipe and Andre Smith at Oklahoma State. Both had fouled out and no one got punished. KU players had a much more significant incident with Missouri fans underneath the basket in 1961. I think Bill Bridges and Wayne Hightower were two of the players.

  37. as i approached this game, there were four self inflicted errors that I didn't want to see: 1) lazy passes or attempting to pass the thru two defenders that result in turnovers; 2) missed bunnies; 3) getting a defensive rebound 90% secured and then losing it to a slashing quick handed defender; 4) AM getting fouls when what she was trying to do wouldn't have been effective anyway. Those were the four. The first three of those were committed in the first 60 seconds and the 4th was not far behind. I have to give up on bemoaning the lack of traveling calls. I guess that the practical meaning of traveling (not as defined but as called/applied) has changed and I have not yet changed with it. This team should be performing better - considering the available talent

  38. I've been thinking about this for quite awhile. It's not that Nebraska's guards are bad players, they are just physically at a disadvantage across the board against most of the conference competition. 2-3 inches shorter also usually translates to shorter wingspan and makes it quite difficult for them to do what they need to do on the court on both ends, but especially when they face a little defensive pressure. I think the focus of recruiting guards needs to look more at the 5'11" to 6'1" type of player.

  40. Out-Sorted, Out-Played; & Out-Talented! (Maryland is #11 for a reason ) Maryland, with a buzzer-beater bucket to end the half, leads by Twenty-three (14-37).

  41. Why take a time out? We wouldn’t make any adjustments. We are outclassed and overmatched. This team is not improving. Our post players are expecting shots to be blocked and they are displaying hands of stone. Maryland is playing well defensively but they know what we are going to do. It’s a sad performance.

  43. They played about as good as I thought they could have on defense, but didn't score enough. Not really upset -Lawrence and Dawson both looked like freshman today, which I should've expected. 8 missed Ft's between the 2 of them. Split those and you have a different game. Both will learn from this, as I did like Lawrence's pressure on the rim and handling on the perimeter. Defenders tested his handle a bit with reaches and he didn't lose it. Just have to finish possessions with FT makes. Dawson wasn't really aggressive attacking the rim, which is needed sometimes. -If Bando is out an extended period, I think they'll re-inset CJ to the starting lineup, or WIlhelm. Lawrence will act as the backup lead guard to spell Sam. Wouldn't be upset if he starts to attempt to replicate Bando's defense. -Overall team doesn't quit despite being outgunned today. Pickett is a borderline All american and Funk is a 5 year college shooter, both of which showed today. Great effort, had chances to win though. NW next tuesday (or Wednesday depending on what happens with their in house COVID issues). Defend PBA and get back above .500, which I expect.

  44. We did compete with a short handed squad. Penn St is a solid team at home. Our lack of offensive playmakers is the main liability. We are getting the most we can out of our players. Wins are tough to achieve.

  45. We’re well coached. We only have a punchers chance with our two best defenders out with injuries. I was impressed they kept it close, but damn… how depleted can you get? Those early games Walker missed are killing us now.

  46. Free throws. Free throws. Free throws. Breidenbach cannot be allowed to shoot another 3 the rest of the year. Total momentum killer. Just a wasted possession. Sideshow Bob off the bench canning his 2 3's didn't help. Both and-1's for Funk in the 1st half and the and-1 foul on Tominaga late in the game were absolute, unfiltered horseshit. Great effort again after terrible start and losing Bandoumel. These guys battle til the end - they just can't shoot.
