  1. Just some advice from an OG. I told people a few years back that a kid as talented as Terran Petteway doesn't come along very frequently for us and to enjoy the ride (the year of No-Sit Sunday.) Well, we're seeing another once-in-a-generation kind of effort from Derrick Walker in 4 games so far this year. And if his performance keeps up like this, I will confidently tell you that you won't see another guy like him in a Husker uniform in maybe another generation. I went back and watched the extended highlights from Creighton again. What he did against Creighton was special. Kalkenbuglewhatever is a GOOD player. A very good player. He's long, he's very talented, he's experienced. Derrick Walker abused him. And, let's be clear: It wasn't just some lucky shots that were falling. Derrick was playing his game. The shots he was taking are very much in his arsenal. If he continues to play his game and doesn't let the hype get into his head, I think we could be witnessing something historic for a Husker player. I'm saying it now: We have not had a big man in a Husker uniform that was as talented as Derrick Walker since Aleks Maric, and Derrick probably beats him in a footrace. You probably have to go back to senior year Venson Hamilton to find a Husker big man who was better. No matter what happens with the team, try to enjoy watching Derrick Walker. This could be a season for the ages.

  2. That makes me think our new FB coach isn't going to have the option to mess around with the Blackshirt tradition.

  3. Speaking of reliable Big Men-- am I crazy to think that we'll be in good hands with a BK, Oleg 1-2 punch the next few years as well? Have been pleasantly surprised with Blaise. Not that he's lighting the world on fire... but for the little things. Coachable, plays within himself, does the little things right, smart BBall IQ, etc.

  4. Yup, everyone worried about the Frost buyout can see that over the long run Alberts can be relied on to make smart financial moves like using up the unallocated Blackshirts from football from the last decade

    THANKS, KENT!!!

I've said this before and I'll say it again: Kent P draws images with his words that allowed me to visualize the action back when away games weren't on TV. (Even when they are, I'd rather listen to a synced radio broadcast than bland TV PBP guys.) And then the Pinnacle Sports Network screwed the fans and screwed Kent and decided we needed an announcer who wasn't a fan of the program to call the games. Like WTF? Give me a fan of the program! I want the guy whose voice tells me he loves the program as much as I do. Who says things like "BANGARAAAAANG!!!!" and "I LOVE YOU SHAVON!!!" I am glad Kent is our guy. And he's just a good dude, too. So ... Yes, thank you, Kent!

  6. Another thing I want to mention about Derrick Walker, and if you haven't had the opportunity to attend a game, you wouldn't have seen this: While he was recovering from his health issue, Derrick didn't just sit there and sulk. Whenever Wilhelm or Blaise came out of the game, or during a media timeout or what have you, I watched Derrick's interaction with his proteges. He was coaching them up regularly. During timeouts, if they were pulled from the game and weren't sitting in the huddle, Derrick would take them aside and you could just see by the way they were interacting that he was explaining something to do with how to be a better player. For example, he'd demonstrate throwing his elbow a certain way and you could tell he's explaining how to establish position. And Blaise is attentively watching him and nodding and absorbing it. You don't always see that, so it's kind of noteworthy when you do.

  8. Trev handing out Football jerseys to the Basketball players was beyond idiotic. He should’ve given them Black ‘91 Hoops Jerseys to commemorate the Big Win, honoring our BASKETBALL history & remembering the 40 beat down we put on Creighton that season on our way to a #3 Seed!

  14. Some big moments for me personally. 1. When we got down in the first half by 1 or 4-- we never let CU have any separation. We always seemed to have a bucket and that was key in keeping us in it. 2. Start of the 2nd half. First possession, DW misses a bunny but gets his own board. Gives it to CJ who misses a 3, but again DW gets the board. DW then takes it right at CU for a bucket. 3. Up 31-23 early in the second with all of the MO. Bando misses a shot, Sam misses both FT's and then we have a turnover and just like that it's 31-30. Sam proceeds to miss a shot and CU has a chance for the lead. But our D shows up again, gets an easy steal for a CJ dunk. 4. Wilhelm's 3 when we were only up 3 at the time. Gave us a 6 point lead, but we gave up an O board and three on the next possession. So instead of being tied, we came out of that sequence up 3.

  15. Just watched this because I'm trying to reverse engineer our match-up zone... Think I have some ideas. But I primarily wanted to see how Bando got so many steals on air off of skips, it seemed like design. We just X out really well on the back-side and Bando has a knack for it. Not sure it was anything more than that. Also, Jesus... Derrick just, he just... well he killed a man, all game long.

    THANKS, KENT!!!

I'm sure many others on this board can say the same, I've been listening to Kent call Husker basketball since the very beginning. He's a treasure! BTW, I listened to his entire call yesterday. I was in the kitchen frying chicken and mrs. cip was in the living room watching the game. It works out pretty well. Since satellite is about 30 seconds delayed from radio, whenever there is a great play, I can run in and watch it on TV.

  20. CJ can't be on the court at the end of games if he's gonna make plays like he did at 1:40 and 1:00. That's not acceptable.

  22. This team is SOOOOO much more likable than recent prior iterations. It sure seems like we have a much stronger culture, a team with pieces that actually fit well together and most importantly, a team that is completely bought in to the "team" and not themselves as individuals. Looking forward to tomorrow night!

  24. I'd quibble and say that Maric was better than DW. DW is more efficient, but Aleks dealt with constant double teams as the team's sole focal point. Aleks also went off for 41 and 37 points on separate occasions, which I don't see Walker as capable of doing. Maric was also a far better rebounder. Saying you have to go back to Venson's senior year to find a better big man is short changing Aleks.

  25. Said that two years ago and it wasn't received well. DW is one of my favorite Huskers of all time.

  27. I saw someone compare him recently to Andre Smith. I was pretty young when Smith was playing, but he may have had a bit more of a mid-range jumper than Walker has? Both of them were/are undersized for the position they're playing, so I see the reason for the comparison. I do remember Smith being incredibly strong, so that portion of the comparison I believe would be spot-on as well. Walker is so strong, defenders rarely can knock him off balance. He finishes through contact incredibly well and doesn't give up rebounding position. Smith was Big 8 player of the year his senior year, so Walker certainly isn't going to duplicate Smith's list of postseason honors. Maybe that alone makes the comparison unfair to a player as great as Smith was, but Walker's game is impressive.

  28. That was extremely curious with Shareef. The only thing Mitchell does at a high level is apply pressure on the other team’s ball handlers. That happens to be our Achilles heel. Normally McDermott is a strong game planner.

  34. Brenda's Take"Obviously a lot of disappointment in our locker room, and rightfully so. We knew how good Nebraska is and they obviously showed it. We knew they were going to come in hungry after their disappointment in their loss to Virginia Tech. I thought they exposed us in every way possible. We obviously knew they could shoot the three and I thought they had a great gameplan to drive and kick and rebound, it was really, really impressive. The second half was obviously pretty disappointing. Fatigue obviously played a factor in this game, but it isn't the reason why we lost…Obviously, there are areas for us to be able to learn in. I think we're disappointed in our defense, we weren't able to bring that. You can have tired legs and not be able to shoot the basketball on offense, but the defensive side is probably the most disappointing." fatigue? what.......were you still out celebrating from beating ND??? i was sooooo glad to see them stick it to Diamond Miller after her antics when she hit the winning bucket against Notre Dame.

  35. Don't think about it that way, rather think of it like this: Creighton fans are now forced to root for us the rest of the year in the hopes that by the end of the season this won't be such a bad loss for them. And you know that would make pieces of them die doing that...or at least it would if they weren't already hollow, dead husks of people already.

  36. Best in 15 years is still noteworthy. I agree Maric drew a lot of fouls. Drew a LOT of fouls. That was one of his best attributes. But I'm saying look at what he's doing this year and if he keeps it up, this will be a season for the ages. One guy like this every 15 years or so? You better freaking enjoy it.

  39. I mean Brandon Ubel's senior season was pretty decent (despite playing on a horrible team). And I know people love to hate on Wilhelm right now but I could see him developing into a pretty serviceable big man by the end of his time here like Brandon.

  40. aphilso1’s 2022 USMNT recap and 2026 lookahead. G – Turner (28) was solid in the net and goalies age slowly. He should still be in his prime, albeit the tail end of it, for 2026. Steffan and Horvath (both 27) should still be in the keeper pool as well. Johnson (33) is likely done. LB – Jedi (25) should still be the starter in 2026. Antonee logged a full 90 minutes in every match, and the drop-off in performance by the end of the tournament was noticeable. Finding a player that can give a 29 year-old Robinson a breather needs to be a priority for 2026. I think Joe Scally (19) was technically the backup LB, but he is naturally a RB. CB – Ream (35) was our rock on the backline but he is certainly aged out. Zimm (29) had a hot-and-cold WC that exposed his weaknesses on the ball. Miles Robinson (25) missed the WC due to injury, but is likely the frontrunner to anchor the backline in 2026. CCV (24) played OK in his single WC appearance. Brooks (29) would still be a potential option in 2026 despite not making the 2022 roster, but only if there is a change in management style (Gregg has gone on the record saying he doesn’t think Brooks is a good fit for the high press style that he prefers to run). I’d assume Berhalter won’t make it all the way to 2026, so a reasonable expectation would M. Robinson/Brooks as starters and CCV/(insert young up-and-comer) their backups for the next roster. RB – Dest (22) was himself. Dangerous going forward but got trapped out of position a lot tracking back. Thankfully we have the human eraser in Tyler Adams to cover most of those mistakes. Yedlin (29) likely ages out but gave quality minutes in his two sub appearances. Shaq (26) still has a shot at the next window but looked like the least talented player on the pitch for his two sub appearances. I’d expect Scally and Reggie Cannon (24) to back up Dest in the next cycle. DM – Tyler Adams (23) was our MVP. So so good. Acosta (27) is technically his backup but there is no reason to pull Tyler off the pitch unless he is injured. Would expect a young kid to replace Acosta as the backup for 2026. Perhaps Busio (20), who prefers to play more forward but is also an excellent DM when needed there. Mid (#8): Weston (24) looked really good in the first half of each match, but clearly was not fully fit coming off of his injury. Plenty of options to be his backup moving forward – Aaronson (22) & LDLT (24) are both good options for a box-to-box player, while Reyna and Musah (both 20) can give you extra firepower if wanting a more offensive-minded player on the pitch. Mid (#10): I still wish we would shuffle players around and put either Pulisic (24) or Reyna here, but Gregg seems to like having his best playmaker on the wing. Musah was mostly good here but showed his youth at times. Would like to see Musah develop that clinical service into the box that all great attacking mids have in their skillset. Wings: Pulisic is still our best offensive player, regardless of if he lines up on the wing or as an attacking mid. He is somewhat of an enigma: wears our #10 shirt, but plays the #11 in this system, but tracks back as our outlet rather than pushing forward without the ball, but finds himself in the box a lot when others have the ball. Much like Clint was a striker that didn’t always play like one, Pulisic is a wing that doesn’t always play like one. As stated above, I’d prefer to have him more centrally located but I think Gregg realizes he needs goal scorers and Pulisic’s versatility means he can do anything on offense. Weah (22) was very good and is a prototypical right winger for us for the foreseeable future. Winger is also Aaronson’s most natural position, so he should be mentioned here (particularly if we have a change of coaching that shifts players into more traditional roles). Gio figures into the depth here also, as a Pulisic-style winger. Striker: Ugh. Haji (24) technically scored but man he looked like he didn’t belong at this level of competition. Ferreira (21) disappeared in his one appearance. Sargent (22) looked the best of our #9s but only managed 4 shots and 0 goals in his three appearances. Maybe Pefok (26) or Pepi (19) is the answer, but personally I am hoping that some kid not on my radar is going to develop into this role for us before 2026. Clearly our biggest glaring hole on the roster

  46. OK, guys, y'all need to re-up your prescription for Lithium. Get rid of the high highs and the low lows. I mean, this was just one game. Let me repeat that: Just. One. Game. It's gonna be a slog of a season and every conference opponent is really good. Every single one. And we don't have any more talent on this roster than we did when we lost to Memphis. So, I mean, slow your roll just a little ... 9-4 over the last 13? No. I did not realize that. That's pretty impressive actually. Anyway, I don't want you guys to get too carried ... Three straight wins against ranked teams? Is that some kind of record? It is? Whoa. That's pretty wild. Still, I would just caution ... Fred has two of our five all-time wins against ranked teams on the road? What the actual fuck? Are you serious? Holy shit! I had no idea. Um, I mean, try to temper your expectations because ... Jesus Christ Northwestern beat Michigan State on the road last night?! Um don'tdoitNormkeepcalmdon'tfallforitthere'salotofseasonlefttoplayandwe'restillNebrasketball Can we at least keep the "bubble watch" discussion to a minimum until after we beat Iowa on December 29? 48. Ok. I can’t understate how much this game means to me. I live in Omaha and work with dozens of bluejay alums. I hear crap from them year round. They decorate my office with Bluejay stuff and troll me every chance they can get. All day I hear Kaluma’s a lottery pick, Nembhard is gonna drop 30 on you, got a text right before tipoff “42-7 at the first tv timeout” Back in 2014, I started a bet with the bluejay alums that the loser buys donuts. So, I did, every single year except 2018. I did not do the bet this year. Our company has grown so much this past year I’d be buying like 12 dozen donuts, and at close to 19$ a dozen, I didn’t really feel like it. Well, I’m buying red donuts tomorrow and bringing them in, courtesy of Fred Hoiberg and the guys who played their butts off. And I’m not taking the high road. I’ll be trolling them all week, no mercy. Bluejay fans are the most unlikeable fans I know.
