The Exorcist

Miles often refers to his Elementary Ed schooling, but the guy is a bonafide psychologist. It was quite appropriate that HE narrated the "What If" video this time around. (The same script read by a voice resembling Morgan Freeman during the season opener). There is something to be said for truly believing in a process, or in anything really. And it's crazy what can be accomplished by simply believing in something. Miles' belief in his own process is very genuine and apparent, and it has helped guide him from Doland, SD to Head Coach in the Big Ten. He hasn't even been here two years, but now a whole fanbase believes in his process—and in this team. Pregame videos and pump-up narratives are often very cliché. That video wasn't. That video gave me goosebumps: The part of the video where it says, "What if one, then five, then fifteen, then fifteen thousand..." Truth be told, this wasn't just a bunch of BS spewed to appease an intro video, it was actually quite profound. (But how many people truly believed when the same script was read before the FGCU game)? "What If One?" Miles clearly states a goal of going 9-9 in the league. He makes it known that he wants to get to the tournament and win when we get there. How many people other than Miles, his staff, (and a few on this board) think that this is achievable? "Then Five" I believe it is after the Ohio State game, we are sitting 1-4, and Petteway states, "We want to get to the NCAA Tourney." Experts and the majority scoff. It becomes apparent that a handful of players start buying in, but at this point we are still anything but cohesive. "Then Fifteen" Roll out the US Always Warmup shirts. An unfortunate circumstance provides as a coming together moment for the team. We win five of our next six, including a win at Michigan State. During this stretch, collectively, the entire team buys in. "Then Fifteen Thousand BELIEVED?" The Michigan State win has the diehards believing. We appear on the bubble and in contention. Tickets to games begin to 'actually' sell out. We beat a surging Indiana team in Bloomington. A buzz can be seen and heard across the state. Ticket prices to the Wisconsin game skyrocket. The game atmosphere is electric. "What If I Told You It's Happening?" One of the biggest wins in program history is accomplished. We finish fourth in the conference. We are on the verge of our first tournament appearance in fifteen years. We are seen as a legitimate contender to win the freakin' Big Ten Tournament! http://youtu.be/HWZ3rZu7SDc11 points -

If you think raising ticket prices to compensate for a $50k bonus is going to hurt anyone in the pocketbook I would say you've got another think coming. What it amounts to is approximately $3 per season ticket. And if you look at it another way, that would be in the neighborhood of about 15 cents per ticket per game increase. As it is, the increased revenue, and profit (about $1.5 million worth), from raising basketball season ticket holders from ~6000 to 15000 (with little or no increase in ticket price) would cover just about any reasonable raise the AD would consider giving the coaching staff. I would imagine if you'd survey season ticket holders and asked them if they thought that was "throwing money around" they would laugh back in your face. I don't imagine you're very good with contract negotiations judging by your shortsighted post, Johnny. Finally, how do you propose the AD would be "years ahead of schedule" by saving "millions of dollars vs what TO did" when they are already running a pretty decent surplus as it is without saving your millions? Got an answer for that? Saving money for a rainy day doesn't win championships, Johnny.4 points

I gotta' admit, the first 3 minutes were fun, exhilarating, bursting with hope and passion. Yet, still nerve wracking, knowing Goliath was nowhere near out of it...and the game not over by any stretch of the imagination. Rather, give me the feeling I had the last two minutes...gleeful, inspiring...the joyful floating feeling of reaching the peak of K2... to look down upon your promised land...the new frontier... with tears of joy the only thing obscuring my view! Sunday was the first day I ever heard a basketball game as loud as the old tile and tin gym at Omaha Holy Name was in the 1950's during their championship runs... Making a 16K arena sound like that old over-packed tin can....AWESOME!!! This is going to be fun...and Miles to go before we sleep!3 points -

I have multiple opinions on this topic. --When Miles made the comment "don't put that crap on me...that baggage doesn't exist" I don't think he meant that this history of thd program doesn't exist. I think that he meant that he will set his own precedent, rather than allow the one that has been set by other players/coaches dictate the way they go about things. I think he meant that he (and this team) have no control over what happened before they got here. All they can control is what they do, now that they are here. I believe it had something to do with a comment that someone made 2 months ago, before this team had learned how to play together. Someone called Miles out saying multiple things. One of them being "The time to win is now. We haven't been to the tournament in 15 years..." Miles responded with "Well, you haven't. I have. We know what we are doing and we know how to build this thing." He doesn't want to be the new boyfriend, that is punished by the girl, because her past boyfriends have all screwed her over. All he can control is his actions. --I also believe that his comments were very calculated. I believe that he is trying to keep his team from being so tightly wound when they play in their 1st NCAA tourney game. He knows how fans/media can be here. He knows that the BIGGEST story that will be focused on is "Nebraska hasn't made the tourney in 15 years, and Nebraska has never won a game". Nebraska fans/media have a tendency to beat these things to death, which gets into the heads of the players. I believe it's one of the reasons that Nebraska football was able to play so close with Texas so many time, but always found a way to choke the game away. Because there was so much tension built up in the time leading up to the game.. talking about how Nebraska can never beat them. So these players are asked these questions by all of the local media, and the players read about it in every article put out by the local media. I think Miles made those comments for the benefit of his players. Knowing that the big story is going to be that Nebraska hasn't made the tourney in 15 years and Nebraska has never won a game. I believe Miles doesn't want his players to be concerned with any of that, so he wants to do his best to stop that narritive in the media, before it has a chance to make this team play tight in the NCAA Tourney. Because for them to play to their potential, they need to be focused on the here and now...not the past history of the program. --While Miles doesn't want his players to worry about what this program hasn't done in the past...that doesn't change the fact that the fans have had to experience these things. I don't believe Miles was trying to discredit what the fans have had to endure in he past. He just doesn't want to be held responsible for something that he had no control over. These things did exist. The fans did have to endure these things. Nothing will ever change that. And I don't think Miles is trying to sweep that under the rug. I think he is just saying that he doesn't want Nebraska's past to be held against him, or this team.3 points -

Staff too please? Tim does a great job, but he's said (quite a bit, on the record) that he has great people around him. He may not be looking elsewhere, but his staff may become a decent commodity after this year. I've wondered some if part of the problem Doc had was that the assistants were (comparatively, anyway) paid peanuts and he couldn't keep them here. IIRC, Brandon Ubel had something like 13 different coaches through his career here. If we're handing out free money, let's include them too.2 points -

The atmosphere during after TP hit that three to make it 10-3 was unbelievable. Could barely hear Kugler at all. Same as after Shield's second dunk. Couldn't hear the whistle for a timeout. Ray was still playing defense until all the other players were past half court heading to the bench before Ray figured it out. Edit: By the way, Ray's defense Sunday night was outstanding in my opinion.2 points -

Highly unlikely we get matched up with Creighton in second or third round, considering Ras is on the committee and you know he would not want to set up Creighton in that scenario. Funny thing is I actually think we have a great roster to match up with Creighton (when we don't play with our underwear over our heads like we did in our first road game this season). Tall, athletic guards that can score at the rim is exactly what they can't defend. Unfortunately we hadn't figured out that was our strength yet at that point in the season and Shields was nowhere near as good as he is now. Anyway, everything continues to go extremely well for us on the Bubble Watch. North Dakota State won Summit League. Gonzaga won WCC. Only Southern Miss (CUSA), Louisiana Tech (CUSA), Toledo (MAC), and Stephen F. Austin (Southland) are remote bubble candidates left from smaller conferences, and most of those are even unlikely bids/don't have a better resume than Nebraska anyway. It's really looking like there could be 22 1-bid leagues. Then there are 10 major conference champions who we hope come from teams already in the field. That leaves 36 spots for about 43 legitimate bubble contenders according to ESPN's Bubble Watch. Some of those 43 teams are Dayton, St. Joseph's Minnesota, California, Pittsburgh, Florida State, Xavier, Providence, Georgetown, St. John's, BYU, Arkansas, Missouri...we are in pretty good shape.1 point

Major props go out to former Husker Amy Williams! Head Coach Williams and her South Dakota Coyotes (19-13) punched their ticket to the Big Dance with a 82-71 win over Denver in the Summit League championship. South Dakota beat 3 time defending champion South Dakota St in the semi-finals ending SDSU's 15 game win streak in the conference tournament! South Dakota made the jump to Division I athletics in 2008-09. This is the first time South Dakota has ever made it to the NCAA Tournament!1 point -

Reminds me of our discussion on whether Petteway being "clutch" at the end of the shot clock is just random distribution of a small sample size or has something to do with his mental fortitude that he's able to rise to the occasion. How might one explain such a large variance in opponent's free throw shooting percentage? It's a free throw. It's not defended. Yet there's a 17% gulf between teams who shoot 60% when playing at Northwestern and 77% when shooting at Michigan State.1 point -

I am so juiced that I may never come down. Actually I just wanted to join the fray here briefly after one of the very best times in my broadcast career. This season has been the best. The Wisconsin game was the best. Tim Miles and his staff are the best. These players are the best. The Vault is the best. Nebrasketball fans are the best. The RedZone is the best. Heck, even Matt Davison is the best. Thanks to all of you for your meaningful, funny, heartfelt and insightful discourse on the site. I've enjoyed it for many years.
