Yeah, I understand your thoughts on Gary.  I was only going on a tidbit I heard; that we may see Gary @ the 3 with certain personnel groups.  Then again, it may have simply been a practice experiment. 

Re-watching the 1st half this morning.  A few smaller concerns and a few positives watching it back…

1. We’ve got a lot of shooters… can they be makers?  A lot of guys weren’t afraid to shoot the rock.  It’s not a bad thing…. yet. However, when things get tougher down the road, we can’t revert back to “shoot it now or I won’t get it back” like some past teams.  
 

2. Another reason Sam will play a lot is he isn’t looking for “his”.  He isn’t afraid to shoot or drive when it comes in the flow of the offense… but he’s not forcing things.  Around the 13:30 mark of half 1, Sam got a kick back off an offensive board.  Could have easily shot it.  Instead continued with ball reversal around the perimeter and Boogie ended up missing an open look for 3.

3. SH’s pass to JLaw at the 11:45 mark of half 1 was beautiful.  Missed layup,

4. Looking at all these missed open looks.. we could have probably scored 100 last night fairly easily if we make them plus our FTs.

5. JLaw had a tough stretch from the 14 minute mark through the 10 minute mark.

6. It’s been a while since we’ve had multiple guys dominate the post game like Mast and Allick did for about 3-4 possessions midway through the first.  Regardless of opponent… we’ve strung there against everyone.

7. Gave up 13 offensive boards but a fair share were in this first half here.  Gotta clean that up.

8. Scores in bunches the last 10 minutes.  To finish with over 50 points was quite impressive.

That Sam Hoiberg 40' dart of a pass to J.L. for a layup was the best pass I saw all night. Too bad Lawrence botched the layup. That was an incredible pass by S.H.

Allick and Mast as a unit are going to be a problem for teams that don't have 2 big men out on the court. I like it.

Allick is a glue guy, and I'm always fond of the glue guy for the Big Red. He's a force from wherever he is on the court, diving for a loose ball, running in transition, spotting up for a 3, he's going to the X-factor for how far this team advances.

Brice Williams is a nice piece to the puzzle, he just needs to figure out where he fits, especially when K.T. is back. I think B.W. will be very effective with Tominaga out on the floor. It's a great problem to have, knowing Keisei is going to be back, when you still win by 32.

I'm highly encouraged by opening night. In Hoiberg's early years at NU, they struggle on opening night to teams that wanted it more. I didn't get any sense that NU wasn't the team that wanted it more. I like it. They can build on this. The non-conference builds perfectly for this team to gel before Big Ten play. It's going to be a fun ride. GBR

CJ scored a very quiet and very efficient 13 points last night with zero turnovers. What I was picking up about his confidence level and just overall comfort with his role beginning with the Spain trip was confirmed by what I saw last night. Right now, I start him over Brice. Brice gives you better length and athleticism, but CJ seems to understand what we're trying to do and has accepted his role within that scheme. Brice did fine off the bench for Charlotte. That might be where he's comfortable.

 

And, right now, I think Allick is better than the best of what I saw from Juwan Gary last year. He has a high-end motor. He's making all the hustle plays. I don't see what Gary brings to the table that you don't get with Allick. Juwan is a tremendous athlete and competitor. He gets offensive rebounds, but a lot of the time those were off his own misses. It just seems like Allick is a better *basketball* player. That's just my take.

This is one of the few years under Fred that we have several good options for lineups.  I like the one you have listed but could also see Williams starting instead of Wilcher.  I really like having Allick and Mast on the floor at the same time and Gary is also a very good rebounder as well when he is on the floor.  In the past few years, it was pretty easy to figure out the starting lineup but not this year which is a great problem to have.

A lot of talk about SH tonight.  Honestly, I see SH getting minutes this year and it isn’t a knock on anyone or a bad thing.  I see Sam being the guy who plays when someone rolls an ankle, the guy who plays when someone is out sick mid-season, and the guy who will step in when someone is having an off night.  
 
We’ve got enough cupcakes this year for two Thanksgivings.  Looking at T-Rank above, we’ve got a better chance at losing to Duquesne than Oregon State and neither are close to being a toss up.  So expect to probably see 10+ guys through the Creighton game.  Let’s get 4-5 games for all 10+ and we will have a better idea of who the big 8-9 are going to be.

So, one thing that kind of surprised me last night was that Lindenwood had a player who is the son of two former Husker hoopster greats, and I didn't see any real mention of it anywhere until @Bugeaters1 brought it up in the game thread.

Keasha Cannon was a special recruit for Paul Sanderford and the women's team back at the turn of the century. Her fiance, soon-to-be husband, was a top shelf juco recruit named Nate Johnson, who was a player Barry Collier would have had no shot at were it not for the fact his fiance/wife was committed to play for Nebraska.

They both came here. Keasha was pregnant with Nate Jr. around that time and might have given birth to him here in Lincoln. Nate Sr. was an instrumental part of Barry Collier's NIT team in 2003-04 that reached the third round of the NIT and had to beat Creighton on the road in the first round to get there.

Nate was that unstoppable guy who, 2 minutes left in a close game when you absolutely HAD to have a bucket, you put the ball in his hands and he could get it for you. Spread the floor, let him go one-on-one, and he's usually going to win. Our last regular season win against Iowa State at Devaney was that exact scenario.

The press release from the Sports Info department following that game starts out by describing the finish: 

"Lincoln -- Junior Jake Muhleisen forced a turnover with 27 seconds remaining and senior Nate Johnson scored the go-ahead basket just seconds later, as Nebraska rallied from three points down with 39 seconds to play for an exciting 68-65 victory over Big 12 rival Iowa State in front of 11,135 fans at the Devaney Center Saturday."

It just feels like there should have been more recognition that the son of two former Husker greats was in the house last night. I hope Jake said something to him about having played with his dad.

Nate Johnson had the game-winning made shot at Creighton in '04 in the opening round of the N.I.T. It was a fun game, I sat in the "Bird Cage" with all the B-J's - loved that Nate made that shot right in front of the Bird turds ( and me  ) !

Recheck the thread.  What pisses me off about Nate Johnson, Jr. was Jake mentioned his appearance, and Kent said nothing.  Kent went out of his way to tell everybody the kid from Doane was the nephew of the great Chad Ideus. I think there's some splainin' to do.

When I first read that Lindenwood had a player named "Nathan Johnson Jr.," I thought: "Hey, he has the same name (mostly) as my favorite Husker from the early 2000s!"

I had no idea until Jessica Coody mentioned it on BTN+.

To Nate! And his son!

When he was in junior college Nate came to my hometown as part of the Triple Threat basketball camp circuit with Don Bechard. Don called him Nate the Great. Good people. 

Allick is very very exciting.  He is healthier than at New Mexico.  Explosive and competitive.  If he comes off the bench it is simply because of rotational items so he can stagger with Mast.  

We have to improve shot selection.  Too many guys taking stupid threes to quick and not wide open.

Interesting..wonder if it’s because Kent wasn’t doing play by play when Johnson was here? Only thing I can think of. Believe it was Randy Lee and Matt Davison when Johnson played here.

That might have been during the dark years of Randy whatever his name was. I’m not sure Kent was calling the games when Nate was playing. So he might not have been aware of the connection.

It is weird but I did see it on Twitter the day before and Amy Williams bought in the mom and gave her some Husker swag before the game. So I think people knew but agree it’s odd it was not more publicized.
