Saw about 5 minutes of the the game in second half--that's all.

Observation: Allick is not a threat to score, so they ignore him beyond layup/dunk range and use his defender to assist elsewhere--where that assistance can have a significant effect.

TBF, most of the team wasn’t a real threat to score yesterday and those that were they were on tight.  They played KT really tight and close yesterday and he still managed 20 which is wild.

However, it looked like they were ok with letting Gary, Mast, Allick, Boogie, etc shoot it from out there.

I'm in this weird place where I'm pretty down about that loss, but also somewhat at peace with it? I mean what can you say - we didn't hit shots, they did, and they benefited from the majority of the calls (especially the debacle at the end of the half).

I don't feel like there's some large, philosophical, "program evaluation," needed to be had here. You only do that if this loss continues to impact the next few games. Need to bounce back.

The big takeaway is that we're likely to struggle against teams that run us off the 3pt line and don't put us on the foul line because that's how we've found success to start the season. We're going to have look ourselves in the face and turn those games into Doc Ball on both ends or this is the likely result.

Luckily there are only a handful of teams on our schedule like this but one of them is Minnesota. If we can keep our composure and execute they're likely just going to beat themselves for us.

In a game like that, I'd love to see a more NBA-style defensive approach. When you're playing Steph Curry, you're not helping off when Jonathan Kuminga catches it in the post or Draymond is driving to the hoop. Give up some easy 2s as opposed to wide open 3s, which were abundant for them yesterday. Now, having said that, as a coach, I could tell my players that until I'm blue in the face. They have to follow what they're told. We know that doesn't always happen with college athletes.

Did anyone see Ramel today? Did not see him. Did not see his dad behind the bench. What’s up?

I went back and looked at the TV broadcast and you're right he wasn't there.

A benign thing that certainly could happen is that a guy starts getting sick after they submit the availability report to the conference and in the case of Lloyd it's real easy to tell him to rest up as he's not in the rotation. We'll maybe find out more on Tuesday's pre-Minnesota presser and/or some random tweet before then.

I thought the game would have been closer, but I'm also not surprised by the result.  They made shots and we didn't.  Refs didn't help either.  They are a good team and it seems like we always play one of our worst games of the year against them.

I will say I thought we had a good blueprint from last year on how to play them as far as pace of the game and it seemed like we just wanted to run with them and that is something you don't want to do.  Maybe it was because they were shooting lights out in the first half, but I was a little surprised that we didn't try to slow things down and get them out of a flow.

Like most people have said though, it is one game, so trash the tape and don't let it snowball into a losing streak.  We still have a good chance at having a good season.

Very disappointed in the game plan and effort. Add in atrocious reffing, which made things even worse and affected our momentum early when the game was still competitive, and you have the perfect recipe for a blowout.

Fred always said the guys will always give great effort, but in the last 10-12 minutes we seemed to quit and CU kept playing. That is what ballooned their lead from 20 to 30.

I did not understand the game plan at all defensively. I get that our guys are drilled in a system, and as much as possible we want to “do what we do” and force the other team to adjust, but it didn’t take a genius to figure out what CU wants to do is exactly what our system gives up, especially with the personnel we have running it this year. I can’t believe there was no plan to adjust once CU started hitting open 3s. Just inexplicable!

All that said, the thing I was MOST disappointed with was Trev Alberts and the athletic administration allowing students in BLUE to occupy the entire front row in the baseline student section for the second consecutive year (at home). It is an embarrassing look for the program and should have been easy to anticipate and prevent. If you didn’t want to simply tell them to move, then you could have blocked off the first couple of rows and directed students that actually support their school to those seats. Instead, CU gets a boost because the students they can see from their bench are blue front and center. It was disgusting and an absolute FAILURE by Alberts and his team to allow something I have never seen at another program to happen for a second time.

Ditto on Trev and the athletic department. I don’t want to trash them, but they really don’t look like they care a whole lot about the men’s basketball program. Between that and the halftime entertainment, it was a bad look. If you’re going to run it back with a historically bad coach, one would think you would be a little more concerned with the optics and the product. This is a red letter game, why wouldn’t they have better halftime entertainment? I mean we aren’t playing at the Bob anymore. At least try to look like you care. We packed the house and created a great environment, stop taking the fans for granted. They may not always be there. Care more.

Just my two cents. Go beat Minnesota.

They hit multiple shots late in the shot clock and those that didn't go in, it seemed like they got an offensive rebound.  Neither of those helped with the above and I think caused us to play faster than we wanted to early.

OK, I'm just going to throw this out there. Bash me if you want.

I'm thinking maybe fame has gone to Keisei's head a little bit. Or something.

Listen, you might be referred to as "The Japanese Steph Curry" but you're not actually Steph Curry and you're not going to get those calls.

So this is the scenario: Keisei foolishly (some might say "selfishly") dribbles into trouble, gets stripped clean, and immediately looks to the refs and shrugs his shoulders like he should have gotten a call.

Keisei, quit whining to the refs and just get back on D.

This behavior has been going on for awhile now. When he rolled his ankle, he got up and limped down court gesturing at the officials like he was more mad about the no-call than in pain from getting hurt.

Keisei, quit acting like a prima donna. Go back to being the lovable sharpshooter who played like it was just a joy to be on the floor. We liked that guy a lot.

That was kind of my point in the emotion vs intensity post earlier.

I'm pretty sure it was Loenser who screamed "Get back on f***ing defense!" when this exact scenario happened in the second half. Might've been Howard. Fred has been pretty adamant all along that he doesn't want to take away from any of Keisei's emotion and passion on the court, but it is time to reel the antics in a bit. I remember a couple situations last year when Ernie gave him a talking to on the bench and it seemed to help. I do think Keisei is coachable (and I applaud him for that because there are plenty of players who aren't and we've had our fair share during Hoiberg's tenure) and will cut some of the crap if he's told to or if there are negative consequences for the crap.

Agree we need to move on and that all of our goals are still attainable. A few thoughts:

1) For the first 12 minutes, we did have a great crowd. It was really loud when we took the 23-22 lead.

2) CJ cost us 8 points during a 2 or 3 minute span  - 6 points because he went under the screen when Scheierman was on his hot streak. The other was on a drive where CJ couldn't stay in front of Alexander.  I like the kid and pull for him, but those mistakes were really crucial and were part of the reason they went on a run.

3) We missed a number of chip shots in the paint in the first half. Gary missed a few on some nice backdown iso plays, as did Mast. I don't believe those were shots that Kalkbrenner affected. We make those shots and CJ doesn't go under those screens, it's likely less than a 10 point game at half. Officiating in the first half was simply attrocious as well.

4) Inexplicably, we usually didn't make Creighton play defense for more than 15-20 seconds a possession. The ball didn't go from side to side like it had been in our first 7 games, and we didn't make the extra passes to get Creighton into scrambling situations. We had to get Kalkbrenner either out of the lane or out of position. We didn't do that.

I still like this team and hope we can bounce back this week.

Per Hoiberg tonight Lloyd is out with an illness and will likely not travel to Minnesota

You are not alone. He has also not gone hard for a rebound / loose ball 5-6 times I’ve noticed. Got benched for it a couple games ago.

LOL. No he didn’t. It was the second half and he was only in his second or third game back from injury. He went to the bench and didn’t play the rest of the game. It wasn’t a message. Stop trying to make stuff up.
