uneblinstu Posted January 4, 2020 Report Posted January 4, 2020 This one was pretty ugly for NU, pretty much across the board. Didn't shoot well from anywhere. Got eaten alive at the rim on both ends. Low energy. Just not much good to say about the Scarlet and Cream. The Scarlet Knights, on the other hand, look really good. They've got a lot of skill and size. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people are surprised come the first weekend in March and they're sitting at 14-6 with two byes in the conference tournament. Especially if they get Geo Baker back soon. I like a lot of the pieces they've got going for them right now. I think we'll see more nights like this for NU, though. With their lack of size, there will be several teams that push the Huskers around. thrasher31 1 Quote

Norm Peterson Posted January 4, 2020 Report Posted January 4, 2020 Can someone explain for me again the whole thing about how we don't need a traditional big man, we just need a 3-point shooting stretch-4 type because their big man will have to chase our 3-point-shooting stretch guy around the floor when we're on offense and they'll end up subbing in a smaller player to do the chasing anyway? I'm kinda hazy on that one right now. Faux Mike Peltz, Bugeaters1, Nebrasketball1979 and 4 others 3 4 Quote

thrasher31 Posted January 4, 2020 Report Posted January 4, 2020 I don't think anyone really played well for us. Cam did his normal thing, cheathem had a very quiet 16 points. Other than that no one impressed me. As soon as Rutgers pushed us it felt like we folded. Myles Johnson and Ron Harper beat the shit out of us. Scared about what Garza is gonna do. But we'll see. Is what it is. On to the next Husker Hoops Penitent 1 Quote
jayschool Posted January 4, 2020 Report Posted January 4, 2020 We are not a good team. We don't have good players, or at least players who are ready to compete against Big Ten players right now. That was evident against Riverside. It was evident tonight. Nothing will change before November. I am not counting on a win the rest of the way. If one or two happen, awesome. tcp and Husker Hoops Penitent 2 Quote

And also keep in mind they're a very young team. The guys who killed us tonight were three sophomores and a junior. They had size. They had length. They could shoot the fricking ball. Good team. I hope they do well this year. thrasher31, Red Don and Husker Hoops Penitent 2 1 Quote
brfrad Posted January 4, 2020 Report Posted January 4, 2020 I would guess they finish 9 - 11. If they had some shooters on their team, I would give them a few more wins. They are going to face much better defenses that will make them shoot 3's, which they are not good at shooting. They wanted it much more than Nebraska did. Kavas deserves zero playing time. He needed to only see the floor with Arop and Easley at the end of the game. He couldn't shoot, couldn't play defense, and couldn't rebound. Our lack of effort drove me nuts. This team made zero hussle plays all night. There were many times Rutgers had three or four shots at the rim. We let Rutgers right around us all night. I can live with a poor shooting night. It happens, but there is NO reason not to give 100 % effort. This team is immature. If things aren't going the way they are supposed to go they mope around or get frustrated, and do stupid things. Hopefully, the team that showed up against Indiana and Purdue shows up Tuesday night, or it's going to be another long 40 minutes. Husker Hoops Penitent 1 Quote
Fullbacksympathy Posted January 4, 2020 Report Posted January 4, 2020 (Pasted from game thread) Charlie Easley: 4th in scoring, 2nd in steals. 3 minutes. What am I missing at this point to give him Green’s 2 guard minutes (I still like Green at point). Give me a lineup of: Mack/Green Cheatham/Easley Thor/Burke Cross Yvan Once. Just once let’s play our best 5 together. Give Cross and Yvan spot minutes from Kavas and Akol. Husker Hoops Penitent and AuroranHusker 2 Quote

If we actually had a three point shooter or point forward (a Roby type) over 6’6” that theory could be tested. With this team though? I want Cross AND Yvan on the court at the same time as much as possible in conference play. Husker Hoops Penitent 1 Quote

colhusker Posted January 4, 2020 Report Posted January 4, 2020 Poor effort God awful defense in space tonight, we just could not stay in front of anyone. Burke is 3 of 22 in the last two games. Wonder how many of those have been put back in his face or the third row, many have been blocked. Way to many quick 3's Two young big guys again flashed signs of good things to come but it will be a long long year for them at this point. We need another point guard, once Mack goes out we just stand around and can't push the ball. Fred NEEDS to figure out how to correct shooting and boxing out. As was pointed out in the game thread, if the guys sitting out this year or coming in can't take a lot of minutes, next year may not be a lot better than where this season is headed. I'm kinda hazy on that one right now. We have absolutely NO ONE who can score with his back to the basket. We lack that “security blanket” of dumping it down to someone on the block when you NEED a bucket. Like UNL said, hopefully those guys are sitting on the end of the bench... Quote
Norm Peterson Posted January 4, 2020 Report Posted January 4, 2020 1 hour ago, uneblinstu said: I think they're sitting on the end of the bench in sweat suits. Rutgers has this sophomore kid who's 6'11 and has a 7'7 wingspan. Did I mention he's a sophomore? He shoots jump hooks just the way @Dean Smith described them. His touch is deft enough that he was able to hit 9 of 13 shots, all in the paint. Some of them were dunks, of course. But if he got within 10 feet of the rim, he was pretty effective with that little jump hook. He also had 14 rebounds and a couple of blocks. I don't think he had to chase anyone on the perimeter. Our guards were horrid from 3-point range. Our big men were worse. So, if we have a big man sitting at the end of the bench in a sweat suit who can knock down some threes next year, it'll be an improvement over anything we have right now. We'll see. I kinda like what I saw from the Rutgers kid. It would take a lot of threes to make up for 18 points and 14 rebounds. thrasher31, HolyBobpilgrimage and Husker Hoops Penitent 1 2 Quote
