Don’t we want to operate in the grey area? Similar to how one would file their taxes? It’s not necessarily legal but it’s not necessarily illegal?

In the immortal words of Bob Devaney, "I don't want to win enough to be placed on NCAA probation, I just want to win enough to warrant an investigation."

We've already started to cross that grey line.

I had heard things when his name was first brought up.  Someone with some connections to the recruiting world.

This. Maybe hopped across the line a time or two

Unless all three posters are getting their information from the same person (and reading through past history and debates and such, that seems doubtful), it seems kind of odd to want one to give up the source (and give downvotes accordingly) but not the other two. It also would seem to not be an isolated thing either. I've been told similar as well.

I'd like to think that Nebraskans (and Nebraska fans) are as invested in the process and its integrity as we are with the outcome, but I guess maybe not.

I would say that generally speaking most Nebraska fans are just as interested in ethical behavior as winning games. They're not mutually exclusive.

My opinion in recruiting is - Don't break to law. Toe the line by all means. Thats why its there. Don't cross it. If you operate in the grey area be careful and don't do anything that would bring shame to the university.

The 3rd assistant or a different role?

I don't know. He'd fit in either as an assistant or hopefully as the director of player development, assuming we will have this position like Hoiberg did at Iowa St. If we're looking to continue to recruit the East Coast he'd certainly work in that capacity because he's connected in North Carolina. If we're talking about Lutz as our 'defensive specialist' that's not what I'm seeing from his numbers. I know Hoiberg wants coaching experience on his roster, but I'd hope Lutz could bring that in a non-recruiting role.

Paging Bobby Lutz

What's the story with this? I seem to recall several years ago that someone (maybe a poster on this board?) had Lutz (and maybe some other coaches) paged at a basketball game or tournament somewhere? (Maybe it was at a Creighton game?) The details are hazy for me. I remember thinking that I was surprised that the announcers let the page go through. This was during the Collier era, I believe?

Anyone in the know who can remind me, I'd be interested in hearing the details of this HHC lore.

Paging Bobby Lutz... Barry Collier's last year, at Omaha (then Qwest Center), Bobby Lutz, then a hotshot coach at UNC Charlotte, was paged over the intercom.

Bob Devaney had the best quote, paraphrased: Do well enough that the NCAA will want to investigate; but don't step over the line for the NCAA to sanction you.

Could someone please look up "toe the line" and use it correctly?

Our new assistant coaches were were asked to toe the line (a.k.a. adhere) while recruiting the AAU circuit.  Best I could do at 7:47 am and no coffee.

For anyone with a penchant for learning things:

There's another explanation missing from the UK phraseology that some might find interesting. "Toe the line" was in heavy use in the British military, rumored to be descended from firing squads in wartime where a line was drawn for the executioners to get to an ideal distance to the condemned. To "toe the line" was a euphemism for carrying out a difficult duty. A similar explanation also courtesy of the Brits as well as US soldiers during the Civil War involved the metaphorical line of a skirmish line. Also a difficult duty, but with an added element of danger. So.....I'm a pathetic geek. It's a cool phrase, because as much as it's used correctly, there's no real consensus as to its origins.

Next weeks grammar police seminar: It's not "the proof is in the pudding".

Interesting.  I have always associated it with the game of darts.

How about "begs the question"? That one is NEVER used correctly!

Lutz wouldn't exactly wow me.

I don't think Lutz needs to work and I don't think he's real interested in hitting the road recruiting. The reason when his name is leaked out and there isn't clarity on his position most probably because he will not be an assistant. His resume screams director of player development or something along those lines.

We're putting a lot of money into this thing; we're going to be rolling out a bunch of new positions

Which I'll be curious to see how they do that because more than a third of that allotment for that sort of thing has already been committed to one guy. Unless there's a budget for non assistant coaching positions we aren't privy to.

If we're keeping Gates he's under salary for $256k.

To put that in perspective, head coach Travis DeCuire at Montana is making $175k which is good money.

I assume we want two recruiters and one Xs and Os guy and that Matt A and Gates are the recruiters. I don't think we have to pay Matt A money to get an Xs and Os guy. How hard a number exactly is that 1M from Moos at the presser?

I guess we'll see if we have our third guy but doesn't seem like it.  We're also not hearing anything official on Gates.  Is this all in flux because if our 3rd guy is also a recruiter does that mean he's actually our second guy and we won't retain Gates?

I have to admit that i'm not skilled in the art of logical fallacies but did I get in the ballpark of presenting arguments whose validity requires that its own conclusion is true @atskooc?
