Since dear ol’ NU is nowhere to be found, I’ve watched a lot of the games as an impartial observer for the first time in a long while. The game itself has become borderline unwatchable for me. Too physical, too much dribbling, too many ref shows. I love to watch competition but the game doesn’t resemble anything close to what it should look like to my eye. A sad realization.9 points

He scored 31 points against Penn State in November. It's strange that he dropped from a 41% 3pt shooter in 2023-24 to 26% in 2024-25. However, he ended the season going 3-41 from 3 after scoring 38 points on Jan. 25. So prior to going ice cold after Jan. 25, he was shooting 37.7% from 3. I'll just chalk that up to he went off for 38 points in a game, got overly pumped about his game and proceeded to miss 38 of his next 41 threes because why not. Honestly, he sounds like a perfect Nebraska basketball player.6 points -

Purdue knows exactly how they want to construct a roster and they're good at identifying guys that will work for them. Braden Smith's was a 3 star with offers from North Texas, Toledo, Belmont, etc when Purdue offered and signed him. There are several stories about how Purdue will go see a high rated guy but then they'll see some guy who hasn't broken out that they'll land. Lots of teams out there spending more money than us not to make the tournament. Our roster construction from last year really points more towards not understanding how to build a team that Fred Hoiberg can successfully coach almost as much as lack of money might be an issue. I think the unfortunate reality is that unless the roster is constructed in a particular way, Fred will struggle.6 points

too bad that two of our best players go out with plays they wish they had back. And before those plays, there were two more - AM having a rebound firmly between her hands before having it swiped away and BP's bucket that was out of her hands a quarter of a second too late. Turnovers, having too little ball movement on offense, and giving up way too many rebounds spelled our doom. I hope that all the underclassmen stay around next year.6 points -

Don't know about the rest of you, but this is probably the most painful NCAA tourney to watch that we didn't play in. By the end of the day, it appears very likely that 4 teams we beat during the regular season will advance to the round of 32. And three more teams that were one-score losses also look to advance. Damn, this one hurts.6 points -

The coaches have their work cut out for them this offseason, but Rienk Mast is a great centerpiece to build around. He's going to be very underpaid by us next year, relative to what his actual value is. Bigs have the highest price tag right now, especially skilled ones. But he's not going anywhere, as it's been said he's with Fred 100%. Only way Mast won't be at Nebraska next year is if Hoiberg's not here. The Big Ten coaches essentially voted him the second best big in the league last year, behind the two time national POY (Mast was third team, but the first team was four guards and Edey, and second team was five guards). And he did this on one good leg. Could've shut down his season and had knee surgery in December. But chose to play through it because it was pretty clear we had a chance to be a tourney team and he was an important component (suck one, Devries). Transfer shooters and scorers will like his film breakdown. Selfless, excellent vision, great passer. Allows you to play five out with good pace and space.6 points -

Minnesota's roster budget was $1.1 million this year. Ben Johnson, a Minneapolis native and Minnesota alum, got a raw deal. I'll still always be of the mindset that coaching and culture matters in college sports. And every year we'll still see low budget teams win in March. But $1.1 million when some of your competitors in conference are working with $6-10 million is pretty ridiculous.6 points -

I don't think "conference defenses had us figured out" explains our plummeting perimeter shooting accuracy after January 1. We looked good against UCLA on January 4. But blowing a 15-point lead at Iowa I guarantee hurt our psyche and probably sent us on the six-game skid. (You know how coaches always say "don't lose the same game twice;" I think we might have lost Iowa more than twice.) Anyway, we had six one-possession losses (including the Iowa OT loss, which we should have won in regulation.) A single additional made trey in any two of those games and we might well be dancing instead of watching. We were that close.6 points -
I don't understand the obsession with thinking we have a major need for one let alone two big men. Mast is our "big man". He is our center next year and should play 30+ minutes/game barring injury. Berke can cover the other 10 minutes/game as backup. Yes, we can and should get an additional "backup" big, but it should be more in camp of a "cheap" big, a body, not a stud big. The vast bulk of the NIL needs to be spent on a PG and a wing. We don't have the dollars or the luxury to spend any significant sum of money just to have "depth" at any position, including the center position. The reality is NU doesn't have sufficient NIL to field a roster with quality depth. We have to try and get 4 to 5 good players and hope no one gets injured. That is our best bet. It is a gamble, but at least it gives us a chance. Trying to get "everything" will get us nothing just like it did this past year.5 points

Inconsistancy and referee's interpretation of rules are the issues. At one point, no hand checking was allowed. Now a one arm/ hand check is allowed, yet the rule really hasn't changed. In fact, in some instances, a double hand check is allowed. 3-second rule...it is still a rule, yet rarely called, and when it is, there is an appearance of referee bias. Coaches boxes...come on, really? Coaches going ape shit, and the referees let it happen...really??? Other calls or fouls are sometimes called by certain refs against certain teams, and not the others??? Hey, I get it, it's a tough job. But it always has been. What has changed is the failure to adhere to the rule book. Go back and administrate the rule book OR change the rules. Simplify the rules. Yes, it is possible to do that. Remove the key area, tighten the travel rule, etc.5 points -

Division 1 basketball has prioritized size and athleticism at the expense of skill and fundamentals imo. The result is a large group of players who don't have control and coordination over their body movements. There does seem to be more hacking, falling down, traveling, carrying, stepping out of bounds, etc than ever. Every game is taking at least an hour and a half to finish. Part of that is all the reviews, but there's also just more whistles and stoppage in play. Yesterday, seemed like UCONN fouled Florida on almost every possession from the under 8 timeout on. The skilled, fundamental players are relegated to Division II nowadays. Ben McCollum brought 6 of them to Drake and the game they play doesn't resemble most of the rest of college basketball. Won 31 Division I games with those guys. They share the ball, good ball and off-ball movement, quick decisions and players who can handle and shoot it. This still exists across D2 ball. This is why Nebraska was so enjoyable to watch last year. If you have time, go back and watch our two games in the Big Ten tourney. Beautiful basketball. I would love for Jay Wright to talk at length about this. In his 4 out motion offense, his guards/wings had a rule of having to make a decision in 0.5 seconds to 1) shoot it 2) pass it, then move 3) dribble north and south. If you didn't abide, you didn't play. He drilled jump stops, pivots, fundamental passing and proper cutting every single day. His teams were always undersized, but never underskilled. I'm not sure it's all the officials fault. They see the fouling and the traveling and the carrying. But if you decide to start calling that stuff then you'd have to call it on every possession. They say the players would adjust, but I really don't think the players are capable of adjusting at this point. It's much easier to handle the ball against pressure when you can put your hand underneath the ball every dribble. These players have been doing this since 4th grade. The game overall isn't as beautiful as it used to be.5 points -

A good season overall. At least we made it to the tournament. For 3 seasons in a row now, we have had at least one starting player suffer a season-ending knee injury. I can’t even put into words what a cruel twist of fate that is. It’s not fair and it sucks. Maybe next year, fate will smile on us and all our players will stay healthy throughout the season. I’d say we’ve paid our karmic dues. Returning players and coaches, preparing for next season begins Monday morning!5 points -

We’re not in a position to be choosy this year. find the best players available, regardless of year. Don’t waste Mast’s last year like we did Williams and Gary. Griffiths, Berke, Jankowski, Frager and Rhymes (along with Perez if we add him) all have multiple years left. That’s 6 of 13 scholarship players. That’s a foundation. not to mention legit players with multiple years cost a lot more and are wanted by everyone.4 points

Years ago we were routinely out rebounded but that was a priority to correct which we did for the most part. And not totally because of Markowki. The next step is to correct the turnover problem. Some of that was from our basically young team. We had way too many unforced ones which can be the difference in winning or losing a close game.4 points -

Nebraska had UL in foul trouble in the 4th, even being in the bonus at the 7-min. mark yet couldn't take advantage of that. I thought the calls later in the game were highly suspect, compared to how the game was called for 85% of the game. Oh well, it is what it is. I thought Britt got totally shafted on most of the fouls called against her. And UL grabbed, clawed, and pushed & hardly seemed to be whistled for that stuff late in the ballgame. I'm frustrated but it was bound to end, I had just hoped that NU could finish strong & make it until Sunday. GBR4 points -
