  1. Nope. Not that it matters. I liked him because I viewed him as a tough mother. He seemed willing to do the dirty work that few appreciate. He had bad wheels that he worked to overcome. He had a good left hand around the basket and good hands. He was criticized for his clumsiness which is fair. He was criticized for his outside shot...but he apparently was greenlighted by someone. I just think more highly of him than many of my brethren, and for that, I do not apologize.

  2. Wilhelm had some good moments. He had some bad moments. But he wasn't going to be the reason why we made the tournament. No bad vibes for him. Did what he could for this program and that's all we can ask for.

  3. he may very well improve, but if you look at his stats there's just nothing there to suggest he was gonna help us win games.

I'm saying both DD and WB were a couple of hustle guys that got recruited over and are transferring for more playing time. I thought it was silly to bring up DD not being loyal or such nonsense, especially since we probably told him to look elsewhere.

  6. I guess it's time to go through this annual excersize, and compare how they match up talent wise to our last tournament team. Interior Walter Pitchford, So. 7. If defense is equated to effort, it's hard to reconcile how bad WB's on/off the court defensive numbers were.

  8. It can be coached. Today's terminology referrers to it as creating a culture. It starts by weeding out the "bad apples" regardless of their talent and then it helps to bring in a couple that do have it on the inside and they can help create that culture where it is more than expected but demanded from all involved. Having a roster that is competing for time can also create a greater work effort over all but I guess that would be on the recruiting side.

Makes sense as he was simply buried on the depth chart with all the guys we brought in. Not much playing time behind Reink, Keita, Allick and Gary considering everyone but Keita could conceivably play the 4 or 5. He didn't develop into the guy we thought he would out of HS and he likely won't on the bench. Gives us a shot at taking a project, a freshman, or in the Grant Nelson lottery. Probably the best for us both.

Sorry, I need to catch up on this discussion. My wife and I were out at the Venue with another couple last night, so I was away from the board for a bit. What’s going on?

What reason was that Matt? Caught in a numbers game, just the odd man out or is there something else going on here that I’m completely unaware of…?

What they do with these last two scholarships Im very intrigued in. I'd say every spot on the court has a solid starter and backup, so do they take a younger big, whether it be portal or freshman. Fwiw, Ashton Smith entered the portal around the same time Wilhelm did, and he still has 3 years of eligibility left, and he was someone they looked at in his initial recruitment. One of KUs bigs entered the portal today and he also has 3 years left. Options in the portal for a younger guy that could play at this level may be easier to find than a high school big this late in the process. I think there's an argument where they hold that last scholarship, and I'd be for it completely. It just depends on how everything develops. Sent from my motorola edge 5G UW (2021) using Tapatalk

Despite Washut’s name-dropping speculations, you’ve gotta figure Nebrasketball is in a mode of watching for something great and unexpected to come along—like the heart-history player we didn’t/couldn’t take last season.

  21. Brice intrigues me at 6’7”, 40% from 3, 85% from the line, 14 ppg last season. Not to put that much on the kid but he kind of screams the same long scoring wing (TP, JPJ) that we’ve had previously. That tourney team had some serious defense though. I think we’ll have better shooting but TP, SS, Gallegos (elite perimeter defender), Webster, Rivers, Benny Parker, Smith could all really get after it defensively. And Pitchford was a matchup nightmare when he was dialed in. Very excited to see how this upcoming roster shakes out though, I agree. It’s as complete as any I can remember this millennium.

  23. @Huskerpapa I just want to be clear before I offer any criticisms of Wilhelm as pertains to your subject, and the rest of the subject. Are you related to him or another husker on the team? You seem pretty defensive of him and I in no way want to offend you.

  27. I'm thinking Allick will be a more polished version of Wilhelm, and I'm good with that change. Fred & Co. seem to be happy with Josiah's insertion into the Nebraska culture which could reap benefits for the makeup of the team this upcoming season and beyond. GBR

  28. I don't know if Nebraska will be better off with or without Wilhelm, but we are about to find out. Hope it works out wherever Breidenbach lands in the portal. And I really hope NU has a massive improvement and is dancing a long time in March this upcoming season. GBR

Besides the lack of athleticism/coordination, I think the wild shot form is what surprised me the most and was one of the biggest reasons I couldn’t come around on him. Career 21% three point shooter. He was a tweener who didn’t have the attributes to excel at either the 4 or 5.

  32. Guys just don’t want to compete for minutes these days, shame because competition is what he needed IMO. Would be surprised if he landed in another power conference but we will see

Nobody is doubting he was a good kid as are hundreds of kids on teams all over the county. That doesn't mean you keep them on scholarship especially where Fred is coaching to keep his job. He doesn't have the time for long term development right now. The reality of it is that he has not developed into the player we all hoped he could be. Certainly he still could do that and hope he does but think it is in our best interest for him to try and develop his game at a different school.

  35. He was a good guy. I ran into him before the season started last year and talked to him about how his rehab was going and how things looked headed into the season. Good kid. I shall not speak ill of him. But did anyone have him pencilled in as a starter?

  40. This isn't necessarily a starting lineup or rotation prediction. Just wanted to kind of compare the roles/rotation of our last 8 regular season games to what it could look like next year. During that stretch, we went 6-2 with three wins over NCAA tournament teams and 2 over NIT teams. Lead guard – Sam Griesel > Ahron Ulis Sam is going down as an all-time fan favorite and for good reason. He did have his flaws at the position. If he were Iowa’s starting pg last year, his numbers wouldn’t have been as impressive. Ulis fits better with Nebraska than he did with Iowa. He might actually be the only likeable player in Iowa basketball history. Guard – Keisei Tominaga < himself next year I don’t expect him to average 20 ppg like he did the last however many games. But I do think he can average 15-17 over the course of a season. And he will definitely have the same gravity and demand the same attention he did from defenses during his hot streak. Guard – Jamarques Lawrence < himself next year Huge fan of Lawrence. I think very highly of his game. He will again benefit from having a point guard who is pass first. I don’t think he would’ve fit well with Wrightsell. Wing – CJ Wilcher << Brice Williams Post – Derrick Walker > Rienk Mast Mast is solid, though. Bench: Backup guard – Sam Hoiberg < Ramel Lloyd I think. And if Ramel is good enough to earn a starting spot, that’d be great. He's undoubtedly a better player than Sam. Sam just kind of did everything correct on both ends of the court. That's important. The good news is, if there are talented guards in the rotation who aren't doing things the right way... we still have Sam. Wing forward – Denim Dawson << Juwan Gary Same exact player archetype. Juwan is just better in every aspect. Backup 5/occasional 4 – Wilhelm Breidenbach << Josiah Allick This would really be a big deal. Post depth – Blaise Keita/Oleg Kojenets < Blaise Keita/Wilhelm Breidenbach - More guard and wing depth with Hoiberg, CJ, Rice, Jacobson
