  1. It's no secret that Hoiberg started his tenure here in what became a less desired time, given COVID threw everything into disarray. It's also no secret that he didn't have the same momentum as joining a new conference, new dedicated basketball practice facility, and construction being completed on a brand new stadium. It's unfortunate. It really is. But all that aside, how has he performed in relation to his other Power 6 peers? Active P6 Coaches Starting in 2019 (excl. 2. Comparing Frost to Hoiberg are two completely different cases. Hoiberg’s conduct is not in question.

  3. I’m guessing Trev will also consider the injuries and marked difference in on the court playing style and attention to hustle, defense, and always fighting too. Those things weren’t always a given last year. Actually, they rarely were…

  4. Safe to say that Coach Joe Mid-Major would have been fired after 3 years of Hoiberg's record and in part because he wouldn't have commanded the same hefty contract and buyout.

  5. Not to say that it wouldn't be successful but this feels more like a Shawn Eichorst hire as Weber is 67 years young

  6. The context in another thread someone proposed was essentially "How are other coaches doing in these circumstances?" So I was using Hoiberg as a benchmark given we tend to care most about that on this board. But yeah, a headline like "The Intersection of Coaching Performance for those Starting a New Position in 2019" is confusing. I tried using ChatGPT (developed by OpenAI) just now to write a better headline, but got mixed results Headline 1: "2019 Coaches See Record Turnover in Head Coaching Positions" Headline 2: "Head Coaches in Power Conferences Outperform Those in Mid-Majors" Headline 3: "Head Coaches Under the Microscope: Analyzing Performance in the NCAA" Headline 4: "Head Coaches: Successes and Failures in the Spotlight" Headline 5: "COVID-19 Puts Head Coaches to the Test: How Have They Responded?"

  7. I guess you may be misinterpreting the entire point of this analysis. First, I'll say, no time was wasted. As many know on this board, I thoroughly enjoy digging into the nuances of data and I figured I'd just share a part of what I dug into today as sometimes other people seem to appreciate the analysis (and sometimes not). Second, as mentioned in my opening this is addressing a question about how other coaches have fared in a similar time-period where a coach gets hired, COVID puts a major shock into the college basketball system, and seeing how other coaches have fared with that. Nobody said anything about a new coach, firing Fred, or making arguments about any coaches. You're right, there's a whole lot more that can be factored in. Especially if the whole point was to make an argument for/against firing someone. But that's not what this was about. For the sake of simplicity I was looking at recency, not digging through the entire history of 363 head basketball coaches. It certainly would be interesting to see how D1 basketball coaching careers trend, and what the probability of returning from down seasons/demotions. If the point was about looking at how coaches fared in 2010-2015, we'd have to compare how the landscape is different today than 8-13 years ago, then see how coaches during that timeframe are faring today. When you talk about no history of basketball success, I looked at every single Power 6 school. That includes coaches who are doing relatively well for the bottom-feeder programs. It also includes the Kenny Payne who's 2-19 (0-10) today. You mentioned SOS. I'm not addressing Hoiberg's situation. Nevertheless, that's scheduled 2 years out; strategy varies by coach but ideally you're trying to optimize your projected expectations/development of players. This has nothing to do with support, or lack of support, of a coach. Just an analysis of other 2019 coaches. The way you're taking issue to it seems to signify something in the data didn't align well with your feelings or opinion about some other topic.

  8. Man…. I’m not sure what else to say besides this has been an unmitigated disaster. I believe if FH was literally any other random coach we hired instead of him this board and husker nation would be completely up in arms. And he would have been fired maybe even at the end of last year.

  9. For me it comes down to, "Do you think FH can eventually build a winner here?" I think he has it in him. He's very intelligent, has a great basketball mind, has good coaches, and I think he found something this year with trying to change the culture. Hope he stays.

    Historical Question

Devaney's name didn't go on it for several years after it opened. It was like the Sports Complex. Not sure what year they named it after Bob, but had to be the early 80's.

  11. It has always been named after Bob Devaney. Tell your friend to kick rocks.

  12. He got worked at SDSU on Saturday night though. The Aztecs went on a 24-3 run to end the first half and start the second (11 minutes) and a 13-0 run from the 5 minute mark to 2 minute mark. Other than that 14 minute stretch it was a pretty even contest... Still, they're having their best season in a very long time at San Jose St.

  13. I just finished rewatching the first half and probably the worst call out of the lot was the flop call against Maryland where they missed Scott getting conked in the head by Wilcher.

  16. Yes, I believe we do. I see a plethora of excellent post moves by our bigs. I also see them being practiced in pregame. Some days we are out-executed and some days we are out-schemed; but I do not doubt the staff's knowledge of coaching back-to-the-basket technique.

  17. Yep. I'm just not sure which assistants recruited them. I know Griesel for sure was recruited by a coach who is no longer here. I'm not sure who got a foot in the door on the others, but I have my guesses. That said, I'm floored by the actual coaching of the assistants so it's worth a shot to see what their roster looks like next season. We certainly have some nice role players.

  19. Collier and Sadler combined to coach 12 years at NU and neither of them ever had a winning record in the conference, and I would argue that the Big 12 conference they coached in was not nearly as deep and difficult as the B1G has been during Hoiberg's tenure. I am just sharing my opinion and trying to add what I believe is relevant context. But I can completely understand why you and others feel differently and want Hoiberg gone. And I will acknowledge that the lack of production by players like Wilcher, Breidenbach and Keita this year make it more difficult to see a bright future absent a massive influx of transfer talent (and it also underscores the severe lack of recruiting the first 2 years). You have been on this board for years and know that I have been critical of Hoiberg in the past. Over two years ago, before the start of the 2021/22 season, I was critical of the recruiting and said it needed to drastically pick up. I took a lot of heat for saying that I did not think Breidenbach would be an impact player for at least his first couple years here (and that has proven correct). Last year I was very critical of the defense as well as the lack of effort and discipline. And yes, I am giving Fred a MUCH longer leash than I would almost any other coach. But that is because he has proven he can win at a P5, and because I believe his name still has cache among recruits because he was a legendary college player, and NBA player and an NBA coach, and he carries himself well and is a good representative of our program. And because I believe he has tried to rectify his mistakes of the first 3 years. He has changed his coaches, changed his philosophy, and I believe he now is finally putting in the effort and actively recruiting himself and not just relying on his assistants. Do I wish he would have done all this the last 3 years? Absolutely! But in the end, you can take solace in knowing that my personal opinion will not have any influence whatsoever on whether Trev decides to bring Hoiberg back next year. I am just a random dude on a message board.

  23. I tend to agree with the jury being out on recruiting, but this staff did bring in Juwan Gary, Bando, and got Griesel to transfer here. Also, I was just watching the coaches show and FH stated that Juwan Gary has two more years left…I thought he had just 1. Two more of him would be nice.

    IOWA GAME DAY THREAD

As usual, watched the game again. We were at our best when we were in a fast paced attack mode. We did a lot of attacking the basket and we scored well Must have been the plan...knowing Iowa wasn't going to be tough (and foul) defensively.....inside the lane. If we sat and relied on the three, we weren't as effective\in many ways. Their center did not try to block shots or defend the basket very aggressively.....no fouls is the name of their game. Anyway, Just another thought....observation.... if it makes any sense.

Yes. Also his time at ISU is irrelevant. But we get it Hoiberg is your guy.

  26. Why are we arguing Team Sam vs Team Keisei when CJ clearly has played worse than both?
    1 point
  27. I decided to vote so we could keep Sam - providing we don't lose all the rest of our games. Viruses and injuries have definitely played a role in Hoiberg's lack of success thus far. Let's hope the transfer portal is fruitful for next year's effort.

  28. Obviously I can't use Fred Hoiberg's record here thus far as an argument in his favor. I would only point out that initially he had faith in his system, with Matt Abdelmassih as his lone recruiter. He stayed faithful to his plan for 3 years. How long should one trust the system will work before they realize it won't? I don't pretend to know, but I feel like FH believed they finally assembled the right players last year to execute his plan, and of course we know what happened. I believe he now knows what it takes to be competitive in the Big Ten, and it's not with players like Teddy Allen, no disrespect intended. It's difficult enough to kick-start a perennially bad team into becoming a winner, let a lone have to do it in the Big Ten. Steve Pikiell got it going in year 4, a year ahead of Fred, and who knows what could have been this year with all hands available. One sliver lining is next year our reserves will be a lot more seasoned from day one. If next year we're playing on Wednesday again in the Big Ten Tourney, then my gut feeling was flat wrong. I hope I'm not.

  29. Ugh. Tough to break down a game where we never really seemed to be in it after midway through the first half. Live ball turnovers that led to easy buckets were killers again. Then again, our half court defense isn't great anymore, either, so maybe the turnovers don't matter all that much. We have a few guys who are really fighting it on both ends, which made our foul trouble in the first half especially difficult to overcome, as the guys who are fighting it had to play a bit more. Went from 1 down with 8 minutes to go to 12 down just before half. Basically, game over. Would've been a complete disaster without Sam Hoiberg's play. The fact that Keisei had a career night vs NW and we got blown out, and we follow that up with a career game from Hoiberg and we get blown out again tells me the worst is probably yet to come. Can't really count on different guys having career nights to boost our offense the rest of the season. Tuesday might be a hide-the-women-and-children night as Illinois was a horrible matchup for us with Gary & Bandoumel available. Silver lining - Vegas' algorithms don't appear to have caught up to our injuries yet, so at least there's money to be made.

  30. The two-man game with Walker and Griesel has run its course against Big Ten teams. They’re forcing it and turning it over too much. We now have two players who are shooting the ball really well (Lawrence and Hoiberg) and another who is still a threat (Keisei). Let’s go back to running the offense and generating open perimeter shots. Hoiberg’s offense has always done that, we just usually have had a total of zero players who could consistently knock down those open looks. Lawrence and Keisei did not get enough touches today. It’ll open things up for Walker and Griesel more. We also need to stagger the rotation somehow to never insert CJ and Wilhelm into the game at the same time, as they usually do. It ruins any momentum that we had built.

  31. Frustrating that we have to nail the portal and have injury luck to stay out of the bottom four.

  32. Me too, although I will readily admit I was excited by the Hoiberg hire and thought it was the obvious step forward for us as a program. Man how wrong I was though.

  33. OK trying to give some honest feedback here. Viewing comments above I've seen a few on transfer portal, a couple on recruiting, a couple on 3pt. shooting..... I think our biggest problem is player development. Line up stats and let's be honest Issie this year or 2 years ago, Jaz last year or this year, Alexis Markowski last year or this year, Annika Stewart last year or this year. As a program we have zero idea there is development past the three point line. The difference between last year and this year opponents have decided to take away the three point line and see if we sink or swim. Having our bigs play behind the line a good idea. If you take away Markowski our bigs average 28% behind the line, I clearly have no idea why that's more valued than the lost rebounds, playing inside out and everything else with bigs playing big

  34. Yeah, never underestimate the impact a great coach has on a program at any level. Almost every program will suffer once that coach departs. Wooden from UCLA, Bear from Alabama, Meyer from DePaul, Dr. Tom from Nebraska, Knight from Indiana, Miles from Nebraska...just to name a few.
