  1. Amen. I'm all about family first -- and him missing a game for his daughter's wedding actually makes me think MORE highly of him. I wouldn't have even minded him missing Friday's game if need be. But you really mean to tell me he couldn't have attended a basketball game on Thursday afternoon and flew out right afterward? Instead, only showing up to the Rutgers game gives the appearance not of support but of an expected loss, which AGAIN he continues to hammer away at. I work in PR. Last season's statement of a need for consistency, and pointing out the 14-15 season right after one of our winningest seasons in school history, used the language of a poor expected outcome. I said so at the time, and will say so now -- that should be for the fans and media to point out, but not an athletic administration trying to put itself in a position to set a tone of optimism and winning. It was absolute incompetence. It stands out even more when you contrast his behavior and language over the last year to his behavior and language when talking about Ernie Kent -- who by any metric was an absolute failure at Washington State, yet he kept extending him and talking about his accomplishments in glowing terms. Now, we have someone you actually CAN make a case for, and instead the disdain is palpable even to the national media. I've made it pretty clear I'm no Bill Moos fan. This is why. The man is utterly incompetent when it comes to even giving the impression of leadership, and my criticism extends to those in his communications division putting out this nonsense. No matter what he does now, he has eroded the fanbase's trust with his inconsistent policies and disinterest in this program, and created his own conundrum with his visible lack of support for his current staff. To me, both as a fan and someone who does this for a living, his handling of the basketball program is absolutely inexcusable. It isn't that hard to at least give the impression that you'd prefer to see your team win. (I still recall Sipple writing that someone made a "he better get this back on track" statement in December -- WHO in their right mind would say something like that, at that point, to one of the state's most well-known columnists? I remember thinking at the time that no matter how much I dislike Creighton, you would NEVER hear Rasmussen or his staff say something like that.) Instead, he (and his staff of "communications" buffoons) made themselves absolute laughingstocks and it is mind-boggling to me how poorly they have handled not just this situation, but the entire last 365 days. 2. I just feel lucky that we have the basketball savant that is Marc Boehm getting to work with and oversee his soon to be 4th basketball coach. He’s done such great work here. Consistent winning. Lots of NCAA Tournament appearances in his 19 years. Continued domination of Creighton. Player after player into the NBA. Marc also helped oversee the magnificent handling of Connie Yori and ensuring our women’s team lost the one great thing it had over the last 25 years. Marketing wise, Marc helped lead this program into all of our hearts. Constantly with the hottest basketball gear for sale. For example, I love that we can find the shirt with Herbie spinning a basketball for sale that literally every Husker fan wants. And I love that we’ve had bobble heads for basketball. Oh wait, never mind. #LifetimeContract #OnlyConsistentPartOfWorstEraOfHuskerHoopsHistory

  3. The other thing I keep thinking about this morning -- local guys like Sip and Dirk are all in a tizzy about Andy Katz's statement on BTN that we should know our place and such. That's hogwash, they say. We can run a clean program AND have consistent success. I agree with them there, but where we diverge is in the responsibility assigned to various parties in facilitating that. It would be a pretty big accomplishment for a coach to turn a historically mediocre program into a consistent winner, without breaking any rules, in 7 years when everyone is pulling together. But when you have an administration that time and time again gets in its own way, there HAS to be some personal reflection on that. Quite honestly, until this department decides to actually treat basketball as anything but an afterthought, it only proves Katz right. Putting up a pretty building doesn't mitigate the damage it inflicts on its own reputation every time it blunders -- and the blunders are as consistent as our record in the NCAA. If you don't take your own program seriously, you cannot expect the national media (or potential coaching candidates) to do so either. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

  4. 100% accurate. There's a little piece of me, probably in a tinfoil hat, wondering if a, it WAS intentional, and b, if this was also part of Miles' last stand. For as awful as Moos is at PR, Miles is a master of it, and he has played this week flawlessly. He turned the fall on Wednesday into an endearing moment; his locker room antics were almost like a cartoon you can't help but love. But the team fought tooth and nail for him too. Every word he said this whole week was pure class, and he played the media like a Stradivarius, while Moos looks like a mustache-twirler. I know not ALL of this could be under his command, but Moos played right into it. Whether it was all intentional or not, I have to tip my cap to Miles for doing what Moos seems to find impossible -- actually positioning Nebraska in a way to look good on a national level. 5. We go through this cycle every 5-7 years, blaming the coach for failing to achieve the success that is our Bob-given right as Husker fans...doesn't matter if it is FB or MBB and until the mid-90s, even Tom wasn't immune, but the only constants in all of this are the fans and the level of investment of the University. At Nebraska, FB gets investment and attention and despite some hires we can all argue about, Nebraska wins at a better than average rate and makes bowl games more than any other comparably sized states. As a comparison, when I moved to AZ in 1998 when Arizona (pop. 7 million+) and NU (pop. almost 2 million) matched up in the Holiday Bowl. Since then the U of A has 9 bowls in the last 20 seasons, Nebraska has 17 in 20 can you guess which fanbase is more upset? MBB gets the administration love at U of A and lo and behold...18 of 20 for NCAA tournament appearances to 2 for 20 for Nebraska. We can argue that Arizona is a basketball school, but that only happened because they committed to getting a top coach (Lute Olson) and sticking with him and then after a couple of missteps, hiring Sean Miller. Miller is now embroiled in rumors in the FBI investigation, but I've heard almost no calls for him to be fired for it (especially compared to the absolute fan meltdown when he "can't get past the Elite 8") Miller is receiving the full support of the UA administration despite the conviction of one of his assistants, the termination of two others, and his pending subpoena...a far cry from the indifference of the NU admins to the B1G run. (Nebraska basketball 11th in attendance in 2018, Arizona 16th) I think the national media has a point and a bias when they say Nebraska competing on the biggest stage is improbable, because it's a small state, smallest in the B1G, and it lacks the wealth of in-state talent, and it lacks obvious natural recruiting lures (beaches, sun, major cities) you only have to look at the thread on the flooding on our very own board to see why Nebraska isn't for everyone. BUT...the administration has failed the fans, the coaches, and the players by not giving 100% to the effort to make the MBB program a priority and make us at least as competitive as the Creightons/ISUs/KSUs of the world. Tim may not be THE guy...but if the support doesn't change, no one ever will be.

  6. Case in point: We're going to put a statement 45 minutes after the game because that gives everyone a chance to talk to the media first. Makes sense, right. You then literally say that a statement is going to be put out in 45 minutes while everyone is talking to the media and you don't tell your coach what very well seems to be about him what the statement will be. You've taken what is nothing more than an innocuous statement and now you have a Chris Heady article about the 35 minutes everyone sat twisting in the wind so yesterday is much bigger than message board angst. Cheese and rice.

  7. Heck of a tourney Funniest thing I saw though Was in the stands of the Maryland game pretty much for the whole 2nd half a A drunk indiana fan was heckling and talking a lot about our players for some reason and then too the players family as well. And by the end of the game Tanners dad was 1 of the few people being held back by a few people and security from beating the crap outta this guy. Robys mom was not having it either she dont care. your not gonna talk about any of our kids like that I heard a few times. 8. For those saying it's no big deal he wasn't there, how many FB games did he miss? The rescheduled one (family wedding) is the main one I know about. Let's just say I guarantee he doesn't miss a bowl game or conference football championship game. From a public standpoint, his support of bball compared to football looks like complete shit.

  12. I still can't get over the fact that there was nary a positive word in that statement about the last few days. Why is Ronnie Green showing more public support and praise for the effort the team and coaches put out over the last few days than our own athletic administration? If you're going to say anything at all (which clearly was ill-advised to begin with), how do you not even acknowledge what every sports media outlet in the country was talking about? Ugh, the more I think about it the madder I get.

  13. F Bill. He cheated attendance numbers at WSU. We dont need to cheat shit. PBA is and has been effing top notch. Tim Miles is not fireable at this point BECAUSE THE FANS CLEARLY SHOW. I will be eff wording furious if the cycle of mid major coach shit starts again. Moos is a dbag. Any asshat NU hired as "AD" could have bought scofro for 5 mil. Do not give him an ounce of credit.

  15. an excellent program. I think eight years before he won a title. This is not to suggest that they are equivalents, but Stewart did eventually do great things at MU, who was rewarded for their patience! That said, I think Miles has intangibles that are worth making a commitment to. He is funny, smart and very personable. I have followed NU for over four decades and I think if he is given the resources others in the A.D. are (including a long-term contract so others can't frighten potential recruits) he might turn NU into a very successful program. I know this is one man's opinion based largely on a feeling, nevertheless I think starting over isn't the answer. Perhaps recognizing his honesty and verve (the media love him) are reasons to consider bucking a national trend which sees A.D.s throw away coaches based on the arbitrary standard (must turn around program in five-six years, on average) should be reevaluated? The point being, not every program is the same, and therefore "fixable" in the same amount of time. He has shown the ability to recruit interesting athletes. If he improves a bit in that area he is close to doing very good things. Think about some of the statistical bad luck this year- yes I know some fault rests with him- but not all of it. These are statistical anomalies which will reverse, just as the Red Sox "bad luck" did. Statistics are not fickle people. The wheel does spin around. Anyway, my humble opinion is just that, and should Moos lure someone who is a great fit for the program, say Hoiberg, I would be equally thrilled. Go NU!

  16. I mean... it's been detailed pretty extensively throughout the board over the last few weeks, if not last several years. But off the top of my head: - This statement, both in its content and rollout. Why was it necessary? Why was there no statement of congratulations? Regardless of personal opinion, it was a point of contention both in the fanbase and the national media, and that adds to our perception of indifference if not actual incompetence. - The athletic director's lack of attendance at games, at home and at this tournament - The randomly-enforced "rule" with regard to outside consultants - The lack of contract extensions, as well as their rollout. Again, regardless of personal opinion, any time you can use the term "twisting in the wind" to describe the relationship between athletic director and coach, it's a bad thing -- and that's something that Miles has had to deal with not once but three times now, twice by the same (current) athletic director. Even if you think the lack of extension was the right move, the perception nationally is not good, and the rollout of it was an unmitigated disaster. - The recruiting issues that Kent alluded to, as well as Robin Washut in previous years - The ticket office apparently forgetting (?) to send out postseason ticket information -- it's either that they forgot or they intentionally chose not to, but either way, it isn't a good look That's all been in the last year alone. I'm not even counting the Roburt Sallie thing, the Shim Shams thing (and the underlying ambivalence that led to it), the relatively low spending compared to the rest of our conference, the lowballing for the new facilities until donors got involved, or the fact that it took until 2011 to actually build one in the first place. Individually none of these things really hinders our lack of performance when it comes to NCAA tournament wins. However, I do think it demonstrates a pretty noticeable trend of athletic department indifference (at best), and this is all just what we see publicly. So I think it's also fairly safe to say that the department's commitment to men's basketball is pretty lacking. It's possible to win in spite of that, but why would you not just work to get everyone invested, rowing together, and clear away the obstacles rather than create them?

    Gutless statement from Moos

We are 11th in the big ten in spending for basketball. It takes the basketball team 8 months to get a display for their Adidas display for recruiting, while the football team can completely change class schedules. I am not complaining about footbal, rather I want the same commitment to basketball. Our administrative commitment has been the same as our finish in the conference. They were also going to go cheap on the practice faculty until doners were going to pull the funding when they saw the constitution plans. Also PBA is a commitment from the city of Lincoln not the university.

  18. Agree with all your points. Anyone telling you they thought Nebraska would win 3 of 4 this week is a liar, so I understand Moos buying a ticket, but the spring game is today. An individual with his resources could easily have rebooked to show his complete support for his coach and team. It looks good even if you want Tim gone, because the next guy sees how you stand by the program. I'm fine with trying to head off the questions about the coaching decision, but the lack of any congratulations in the release shows opposition to what the team is trying to accomplish. On that note, if Miles was in an ultimatum situation and was being directed through mandate or manipulation to coach/rotate against his own judgment then I can't blame THIS season on him. If the inferences made by some in the punditry, and Kent's cryptic tweet indicates that Miles was hindered from doing his job, then the failure is on the administration. Coach Miles has not achieved the success we all thought everyone was rooting for, but if anyone out there with an N on their lapel limited his chances overtly or covertly they should be out.

  19. The deal for me is this. If Moos fires Tim - which I think based on how things are playing out will happen, I will understand given records and that the bench is short due to not getting bodies If Moos retains Miles I will understand given the injuries that plaque the team this year. Bottom line is who ever is our coach after Sunday or the end of the NIT run will have my support.

  20. Its all fine and dandy to think his absence is nothing. To some fans it’s nothing and to others it’s something. But when you have players that are upset about it and mentioning it, that doesn’t look good. Obviously the players feel a lack of support from the administration. That’s a problem that needs fixed. So for us fans, we can keep making jokes. But that absence meant something to the players which makes this more of an issue than some fans might want to lead on.

  22. I hope nobody forgets that Bill could have left tomorrow morning and still made it to his sons spring game tomorrow. I have zero issue with him going to watch his sons spring game. I do have an issue with his timing on everything. He could have easily stayed for two more games. It’s almost like he wanted to be in Chicago to watch them lose to Rutgers for the icing on his personal cake. If he had not gone to any game at all it would have been a better look.

  24. You want to know why Nebraska is never any good in basketball, look right at the administrations. From the coaches they hire, to the administration support for the coaches (i.e. tim miles the last two years), I'll even throw out the Roburt Sallie mess (which doesn't happen if he is a football player). When our administration starts to take our basketball program seriously, then I will. Rant done.

  26. What I think is unfair is that if you know you are firing Miles, then just fire him sooner than later so he can find another gig, if he wants one, and before they all get filled in the coming weeks. I know that Miles is under contract and obligated to coach as required by his contract. However, if you are holding him just to buy time or let him finish the season in the NIT, that just seems like bad business. Fire him and name Lewis interim coach if Miles is gone regardless. Miles deserves better than this. He has been nothing but classy and has never done anything to embarrass the University...read between the lines on that one. This was so predictable of an administration that has given two shits about this team and coaching staff for the last couple seasons.

  27. If he dropped a covfefe in there, maybe? (please don't political-downvote me for that...I just couldn't resist.)
    6 points
  28. If Miles is gone, that’s the biggest issue. What decent candidate is going to look at the external optics of how the administration has handled the last year and think this is a good place to coach or build their career? It’s a bad look all around. If what everyone outside the program sees is this bad, I can only imagine what is said in private conversations between any candidates and Miles and his staff is worse.
    5 points
  29. Of course he could have watched our games and watched his son. Not hard to catch a flight from Chicago to NoCal. Not that big a deal and in the long run it shouldn't matter much, but it was tone deaf to a need to show a total commitment to hoops here. In the end throwing $$ and landing a great coach would make this a minor and easily forgiven offense--but we've been doing crap like this for too long.

  30. Peter’s statement is beyond ridiculous. YOU’RE the AD Bill, you need to be at the Bowl game, Volleyball tourney, & March Madness, period. He hides behind that laughable “Spring game” excuse so he wouldn’t be peppered with questions from the National media.

  31. Can also put together some pieces from that Goodman podcast too...if there was pressure to keep Jordy, as he alluded to, surely there was some pressure to keep the active roster this year as well. And like that conversation between Nick Bahe and Jake Muhleisen said last year, when you're coaching for your job you don't necessarily have the luxury of enacting discipline as you might like (or as you might think is best in the long run). I'd be surprised if it wasn't apparent earlier on, but Miles also got a little more daring with his disciplinary tactics once it seemed the writing was on the wall (like benching the starters at Michigan). No job to lose at that point, so do what's right, not what will keep you and your staff employed.

  35. Agree thrasher, so say: Nothing Congratulate them on the run and reiterate that you will make the decision after the season. Be at the game and congratulate them on the run and schedule a meeting with your coach for Sunday. If it's over, then fire him. If it's not over then Pat Chamber's him (say he will be back) or many many other options better than what he did. I don't get it, just put out some b.s. that makes it look like you care and like most of the rest of the country you admired how they played. Incompetence in my opinion.
    5 points
  36. I agree. I know people want it faster and i agree with those that say we could be consistently a much stronger program, but as AD I would support a good dude that is filling the place and starting to consistently "knock on the door" of the breakthrough we need for our program. I don't want to spin the mid-major coaching wheel for another build, our cupboard is not bare.
    5 points
  37. Good God, how do the people surrounding Bill Moos have jobs? Last year's rollout of the non-extension was a massive flop, they somehow forget to offer season ticket holders the opportunity to purchase postseason tickets, and now his "statement" (which, notably, seems to be lacking so much as a "congrats" or "we are so proud of how this team has battled" or any sort of kudos for the fight they've shown) has national pundits calling him a moron for appearing to let Barry Collier determine the future of our coaching staff -- after opting to skip the game yesterday and today? Forget the lack of leadership he himself is showing here (which is substantial on its own), does he not have a contingent of people responsible for PR? The incompetence here is astounding.
    5 points
  38. If our options were hypothetically down to Collins and a mid-major, I sure hope Miles invites Moos over for dinner and several drinks and they agree on a long term extension for Miles.

  39. Here's what I keep coming back to. Moos could have easily prevented ALL of this kerfluffle by releasing a statement post-Iowa, pre-Big Ten Tourney and said "Wow, what a great comeback. We have positive momentum heading into post-season play and we have the draw to make a run. Regardless of what post-season tournaments we end up in, I'll wait until our season is officially complete before making a decision on Tim's status as a head coach." Maybe I'm naive, but doesn't that cover all bases from 0-1 against Rutgers to 5-0 NCAA bid?

  49. He's also kind of selective with that policy. Openly backed Darin Erstad in the middle of last season (which is not a criticism from me, I like Darin a lot and 100% believe he SHOULD have been supported like that) -- but that was also 10 days after his 1-year extension announcement for Miles, before which he kept hammering the "no comment" line. I thought maybe he learned his lesson but looks as though he didn't.

  50. Shouldn't last year's season count in our minds as an NCAAT caliber coaching and recruiting job? In my mind, it does and we were screwed. So in 7 years, we get 2 NCAAT caliber seasons and one NIT. Is that enough given the dumpster fire Miles inherited? Looking like no possibility for Lue, Matta, Hoiberg, or Sampson. Do we really want to gamble against the most success we've seen since Nee? Had Miles actually lost the team this year, I'd feel differently. But he didn't. I feel like he figured out a few cultural things that could carry into a very interesting roster next season.
