New recruit PG TARIN SMITH
Shuttlesworth and one other reacted to ajb5856 for a topic
I'll take whichever one we get. To be honest this sounds very familiar. Do we get Dickerson (John Groce), the guy everyone is talking about and everyone wants so bad or do we get Tarin Smith (Tim Miles) the no-namer that came out of nowhere? Maybe a little weird to draw the comparison there with the coaches but I think recruiting can be a little like this sometimes. It gets drilled into your head that you want a certain guy. Think of how badly we wanted Atewe last year or Tummala. If the coaching staff thinks a player can help the program, I want him.2 points -
New recruit PG TARIN SMITH
hhcmatt and one other reacted to Busch Light for a topic
If it came down to Dickerson OR Smith, I'd take Dickerson because he's probably the missing piece next year. We need a guard who can create and provide a scoring punch next year. Dickerson fills that need immediately. However, I like Smith an awful lot. I'm not just saying that because I'm a big NU recruit homer, either. When I look at this kid, I see a highly intelligent individual who is very disciplined. I see someone who is unselfish, willing to make sacrifices, and understands the importance of a good education, humble with a team-first attitude. I see a person who has both played with and against good competition. Finally, I see a kid who has positive mentoring and good leadership around him. I ask you, if you could build a prototypical college point guard, wouldn't you want all of those intangibles and character traits? There are plenty of people who can probably break down film better than I can, but I know a little bit. He's not an elite level athlete, there are plenty of high-major PGs who are better athletes. He's a good enough athlete though, he would look like he belongs at this level. I like his vision, especially in traffic. He has the ability to attack. You can tell he's been coached to do the little things, which would be expected considering who's coaching him. Defensively....there would likely be a learning curve as well but it seems the effort and want to are there, that's 75% of the battle. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm all in on the kid. I think he could come in next year and produce at a much higher level than Tai did his freshman year, if asked to. I also think Tai will make a fairly big jump next year, too. I think this Smith could prove to be a solid get.2 points -

New recruit PG TARIN SMITH
bobcat402 and one other reacted to TheKamdyMan for a topic
I agree. Looking at the film, I think Tarin would be a very good backup PG at this level, but I don't think he'll ever be the stud PG that we need. If you look at Dickerson's film in comparison, he's just so much quicker....he looks like a Big Ten point guard. I disagree. I think if you watch both of their films they are very comparable. I mean put the two side by side in high school and its basically the same guy. Dickerson was committed to Murray State of all places last summer before blowing up in a tournament and thats after his 4 years in high school and a year in post grad. Comparing Dickerson's juco film to smith isnt fair because Dickerson has two years on him. I thik Smith would surprise and could be the late on the scene guy Dickerson was just a year ago.2 points -

Nebraska figured out the Indiana defenses in the second half and hit 6 of 11 3s in the second half to put up 41 points and win the game 60-55. Four Huskers were in double scoring with Terran's 18 points leading the way. You also might remember this as the game where Nate Hawkins hit a big 3 after passing up the shot twice. The Skinny The Huskers are a markedly improved team from when they last faced Indiana They've won 6 of their last 8 and found an identity. Indiana still seems to be the same sort of young and talented team that is also inconsistent...the type of team that can beat Michigan and Wisconsin at home but also lose to Northwestern and Penn St. The scouting report doesn't change a ton whether or not Vonleh plays in this game..Indiana still has guys capable of filling the lane to block shots regardless. Once again the Huskers will focus on neutralizing Yogi Ferrell and Will Sheehey and hope some random Indiana player doesn't start hitting 3s. On offense the Huskers need to play through the changing defensive looks and make sure the Hoosiers aren't zoning off on a player. If Benny or Tai are going to hang out at the 3 point line they'd better be prepared to occasionally shoot. Indiana loves to run the ball, they draw a lot of fouls, and they're playing on senior night against a Husker team that struggles on the road. The Huskers are going use a ton of shot clock tonight to limit the number of possessions, limit the Hoosiers' FT attempts, and to take the crowd out of the game if they can. Expect the Huskers to only push the ball when they can score an easy basket off a turnover prone Hoosier team. Indiana is probably a better team than Illinois but they didn't have the luxury of 7 days rest coming into our game. Can Nebraska keep their composure, stick to the game plan, and pull this out? We'll see. Prediction: Indiana 63 - Nebraska 60 Click here to view the article1 point

While the game is still occurring the video at BTN2GO is a live stream, meaning it has no video cached after it is viewed. The B1G Coach's Corner: Dissecting the Nebraska Ball Screen Attack - Off Tackle Empire http://www.offtackleempire.com/2014/3/4/5466066/nebraska-nebrasketball-coach-breakdown-ball-screen-benny-parker-terran-petteway "I have to confess I currently live in Omaha, NE and I have had many of my Husker friends ask me to write on the Huskers and Coach Miles. Many have wondered how Coach Miles has turned around this program so quickly with little talent. First of all that is a myth. Miles has three really good Big Ten players in Pitchford, Shields and especially Petteway. Those three players have developed into solid players with enough talent to compete in the Big Ten. More importantly, Nebraska has been able to develop its role players with Benny Parker and Leslee Smith logging important minutes and giving Nebraska some ups in the intangibles department. On top of that, Miles has the Huskers playing solid defense. That always helps. Finally, the new Pinnacle Bank Arena is a great home court advantage and has given Nebraska a sense of identity."1 point

We couldn't schedule another non conference game could we? It was possible for us to piggy-back on the South Carolina tourney and set up a game with a team there...I think either someone said or I heard Miles say that a game at New Mexico would have been possible. If that was the extra game we could have snagged, it wouldn't have added to our win total. We couldn't have just added a random non-con though.1 point

I hope they beat Purdue by 40 tonight That's impossible. Wisconsin doesn't know how to score more than 40 points. Well Wisconsin does average over 73 points per game. I don't think the stereotype of them as being a slow-down pure defensive team is really accurate this year.1 point

No, he won't start over Tai as he Tai would move to the off guard. Lineup might look something like this: Trey Tai Sheilds Petteway Pitchford I'm not sure what anyone has seen in Tai that shows he can play the 2. His biggest strengths require him to have the ball in his hands: he absorbs contact well driving the line, kicks it out fairly well when he drives/runs into traffic, and shields the ball well when backing the ball up the court. Considering he moves poorly without the ball on offense and has no outside shot, why in the world would we want him to play the 2?1 point

Who cares? Petteway was a 3 star. Would you trade him for any of the Northwestern players or recruits? I do believe that recruiting rankings make a difference, so don't get me wrong. But I also believe that an astute evaluator of talent can beat the system and find players who will develop into great players. In my opinion, it is difficult to fast forward from being considered a losing program to signing 4 star players without the step where you demonstrate you can win with mid level talent.1 point -

He said the coaches there were buzzing about him and said there was a lot of high major schools showing strong interest (this was in January show it's coming to fruition). We make things too complicated now. When I was in grade school I used to keep the score of my dad's high school games with a big piece of chalk and a blackboard because the electronic scoreboard was blocked for some people by the balcony overhang. And I did just fine-except when I would get caught up in the game and forget to mark up a few baskets. When the gym was sold out they had to send soda pops up to the balcony in metal pails. What was the point I was trying to make??? I forgot.1 point

There aren't enough superlatives to describe what that girl can do on a basketball court. Watching those clips just blew me away. Her agility at 6'3" is astounding. She drove on a guard, did a reverse spin dribble for a layup, showing excellent quicks in the process. Very next thing, she's knocking down a 3 with near perfect shooting form. Then she's posting someone up and scoring. If her teammates can get her the ball, she's darn near unstoppable in the low blocks. I am so impressed with her. So impressed. I have not been this blown away by a girl's hoops recruit ever. Not even Katie Robinette had me this excited for the future of Husker women's basketball.1 point -

jdostal reacted to Huskerpapa for a topic
My expectations are pretty simple: - We need to continue to improve the talent. We have moved quite impressively in that direction, but that needs to continue exponentially. - The kids need to have heart and tenacity. I believe a rival coach referenced our players as junkyard dogs. I like that...I want talented kids who will work hard, then work harder, and then hustle their collective butts off on the court. - The kids need to be of high character. Character defines the team and the program. I want aggressive behaivior on the court, but kids the community can be proud of off the court. - I want shooters as well as scorers. That comment makes sense to me... - I would like to see us make some positive movement up the star list. That goes with the talent point. For us to do that, we need wins, including wins in the dance.1 point -

A couple things with this thread. Going back to the original post, I think it's okay to be disappointed with how recruiting is going while at the same time being patient and having the understanding that it's a process that takes time. It's possible to be disappointed AND understand that good things are happening. I'm disappointed every time another player we are recruiting picks a different school. But I also recognize the uptick in talent already on the team because of Miles and the positive recruiting buzz coach has created. We've had a higher level of recruit consistently checking out the program. The type of recruits never before seen around these parts prior to Miles. But it's easy to get frustrated, get disappointed, but it also seems quickly forgotten that we did get Hammond. He's the first rivals150 ever. That's a start. I think we will wrap up the 2014 class and everyone will be very pleased at the talent we are adding. Miles is building this from the ground up.1 point

New recruit PG TARIN SMITH
George Beadle reacted to TheKamdyMan for a topic
After reading up on him more I am glad TM is checking him out. This is his first year starting in HS. He has sat behind 3 Rivals 150 players the last few years and this is his year now to start. On his AAU team he was a starter but had 4 teammates all committed to big time schools like Kentucky, UCinn, Maryland etc. Nothing wrong with finding a kid that was overlooked and bloomed late. I mean lets be honest here everyone wants Trey Dickerson, whom was committed to Murray State last summer and finally got seen and blew up really late and now a year later look at how bad we want him. What if Smith is this years Trey Dickerson but we can get in on him before he has to go JUCO to break his binding commitment elsewhere. by the way cool little tidbit I found when reading, he is set to be the valedictorian of his senior class. Having a smart point guard is nothing to scoff at when the game is in your hands.1 point -

I have been going to Nebrasketball games for 27 years in my lifetime and not since 1995-1996 have I seen the passion the FANS have shown at every single game. For the first time in 15-16 years I feel like this is a real basketball team with a real coach that FINALY get's it on what it takes to win. For years we all have been tricked into believing that we can't win in basketball we can only win in football which is not true all you need is the right coach with a good staff and anything is possible.
