2 spots left

Great news so far today on the recruiting front.  Now we have 2 spots currently open and 3 players still on our wish list with Hunter Sallis, John Hugley and Javian McCollum.  I'd love to end this thing with Sallis and McCollum but always nice to have another force down low with Hugley.  I guess I'd be happy land any 2 of these 3 players.

Will probably be more than 2 spots left. I’d be surprised if Hugley ends up here at this point. Kind of hoping we use one scholarship on a project like the LSU big to give our rotation guys a 7 foot body to maneuver around in practice every day.

In terms of roster spots, we don't know if we will have any more attrition and/or if Keisei will return.

One observation i'd make is that Sam Hoiberg ended up being a better version of a backup guard than I'd imagined we'd have with a healthy McPherson this last season. If QM is a plus in the chemistry department he's fine but it's not hard to fault him if he wants playing time and moves to get it.

Chances are someone will enter the portal that we haven't even heard of yet and maybe even a better fit than anyone we've already been talking about.

 

And then he'll have like a heart issue and our medical staff won't clear him. And then the medical staff will get fired and we'll sign the kid and everyone will be stoked about what a huge upgrade we just got.

 

So, just be patient. Lots could happen here.

as others have mentioned, I expect more attrition on the roster. Unsure where from, but it probably is 1 or 2 more. One thing that made me raise my eyebrows a bit was on the HuskerOnline podcast this week, when Robin was talking about potential additions/portal in general, he mentioned "I would keep my eyes on Blaise Keita here. His ankles aren't healing like we thought they would." I didn't expect him to be mentioned honestly with outgoing players, so I found that very interesting. 

 

Point blank however, we need a PG and another off guard. It makes complete sense for Wrightsell and Sallis to come aboard, and I almost expect it to play out that way. McCollum feels like an OU guy personally, without any knowledge. From there work on Blue Cain and Brady Dunlap, get on aboard (I prefer Cain, but would take Dunlap). If the Keita smoke is real, then another portal big on the younger side is a priority. 

 

That's my thousand yard view of everything at this piont.

I may be in the minority here but I don’t want a PG in training.  Hunter may very well develop into a playmaking PG but I’d really like to see another established PG as well.

One thought to the "point guard" debate.  So much depends upon the offense being run.  In Fred's offense it does not appear necessary to have the prototypical point guard.   An initiator of the offense is not an individual responsibility.   Rather it is predicated upon numerous factors and situations.  

I guess the biggest roles of a PG is being the eyes, ears and voice of the coach on the floor.  A genuine leader so-to-speak. To me Verge and Mack were failures in that role, where players like Sam and Jeter were more successful.

So long story short, Sallis could be successful.  QM and Ramel could be successful as well...time will tell.

And oh yeah, if we worry about breaking a press; a dribbling point guard, flittering through a press is somewhat archaic. A point forward (such as Walker or Pike) seems more successful, or at least it has worked best for us. Or, schematically busting a press is back breaking to a pressing team.

Seems like Fred knows what he wants, and I hope he finds the right mix.

Coming from one of the NU assistant coaches, it sounds very promising we might get Javian McCollum.  As far as Hunter Sallis, he is 60/40 to come to NU.  Sounds like he wants to commit but his mom is against it and wants him to go to a bigger name school.  NU staff thinks if they can get Javian to commit, it might help get Hunter to commit after that.  Stay tuned as things could get very interesting especially if we have more than 2 kids wanting to come to NU as we'd need to have a current scholarship player leave.

Curious why Javian coming here would help get Hunter? Doesn’t Hunter want to play PG? Or does he prefer to play more off guard next to Javian?

I know Hugely has question marks but part of me thinks another big could be crucial.

I would love all 3 and would be ok to see someone like Breidenbach or Wilcher move on.. if they add another PG, I could see Quaran bounce.

They have been friends for a long time and have talked about playing together in college.  So they think if they can get Javian to commit, it might help get Hunter to join him
