Here's an article with a little more in-depth reporting than the above article. (not behind a paywall, at least for now.)

Husker junior guard Keisei Tominaga made his senior national team debut Friday, scoring a team-high 18 points in a 98-52 loss to Australia in the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifier in Melbourne Friday morning.

Tominanga, a 6-foot-2 guard, was the only Japanese player in double figures, has he hit 6-of-14 shots from the field, including five 3-pointers. Tominaga also added two assists and two steals in 24 minutes of work off the bench.

The teams having an intrasquad scrimmage on the 4th, can’t wait to get the low down on who stands out…

Has any info filtered out from the scrimmage yet?

I’d be happier if he could knock down 15 footers consistently. Those would go a lot farther towards Wins then “D” jacking up an occasional 3…

The days of the 15 footer are gone.  Analytics say it's a bad shot.  As bizarre as it may seem, posts that can shoot threes at at a borderline respectable rate are more valued than posts that can hit 15 footers at a good rate.

Will definitely give the team more flexibility if he can

I wouldn't be surprised if Derrick is a competent 3pt shooter.  He has good hands and very good touch around the basket along with 73% from the FT line last season.  That usually translates to respectable 3pt shooting.  If he can, it completely changes the ceiling of the team, imo.  He and Keita playing together on the court needs to happen.

Yeah I actually don't want to hear that. He's in his sixth year and has never been a shooter. I have no doubt that he can make them in practice (there were reports of this during his redshirt year as well). Big difference when the bullets are flying.

I'd want each player to focus on their own defined role and get as good as they can possibly get in that role. The positionless basketball narrative has been very overblown the last few years. Too many players try to be a (mediocre) jack of all trades at everything, and don't ever fully develop any one skill. They become poor to average at everything and don't have a single skill they're above average to elite at.

The three NBA teams that have fully embraced positionless basketball are Houston, Orlando and OKC. It's no surprise these are the three worst 3 point shooting teams in the league. They acquire impressive athletes whose measurables look good on paper and attempt to make everyone shooters. Rather than finding actual pure shooters, point guards who can get them the ball, big guys who can draw the defense in, good screen setters, etc. The most successful teams - at every level - absolutely still have very defined roles for all of their players. They do not play positionless basketball. Golden State, Pheonix, Memphis, Kansas, UNC, Michigan St, etc.  All these teams have centers who can't shoot worth a lick. Klay Thompson is a 3 and D shooting guard and that's it. They don't even let him dribble. Chris Paul and Dajuan Harris cannot play any other position than a pass first point guard. Kevon Looney, David McCormack and Marcus Bingham can't walk and chew gum at the same time. These teams are just collections of players with specific skills pieced together to form units that work and complement each other. Just like any other successful teams that exist in any setting, sports or otherwise.

Derrick is above average in his role offensively. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Just hone it to make it even better. We just need more guys to be above average in different roles. Then piece them together. When we tried to make Terran Petteway a PNR point guard his junior year, he and the team really struggled.

Analytics miss the fact that it forces defenses to defend the whole court and makes offenses more effective in the paint and outside the line.

That seems to be the Conventional Wisdom these days but having Walker drag his defender out to the foul line will open up a lot of angles for Gary, Lloyd & McPhearson.

Derrick Walker 21-22

FG % 2pt Jumpers: 41.7%

% Shots 2pt Jumpers: 25.4%

Derrick Walker 20-21

FG % 2pt Jumpers: 45.5%

% Shots 2pt Jumpers: 15.7%

All things considered short-midrange Walker is reliable offense that you probably don't want to press your luck pushing him too far outside though I could seem him take the occasional wide open 3 if teams give it to him.

Top 144 countdown has begun, we're at 135, last in the BIG. 🙄 Seems like we were in the 90s last year.

Minny at 118, 13th in BIG. They lost 5 of their top 6 scorers, so not sure why they'd be ahead of us.

Schrodinger's Scrimmage. It both did happen and didn't happen.

It took me awhile to catch up with my friend (death in the family etc) but here’s the main takeaway: The First Team was, Blaise, Walker, Griesel, Gary & Bandoumel. Looks like Fred is ready to Go BIG or Go Home. Wilcher, Briedenbach look very differently physically than last season. Lloyd is as polished as we’ve been told & for whatever it’s worth, the guys really seem to get along & LIKE each other.
