It's the Hoiberg effect. A portion of our fan base thinks we've arrived now that we have him, even though we haven't won anything yet. Also, getting Sallis just got even less likely. I'm already convinced he's going to Kansas, but you're kidding yourself if you think Donovan won't be in his ear. He was easily our best peer recruiter for the upcoming classes.

He reacted in a similar way when Tominaga committed. Pretty sure it would have been the same deal if we had signed Jerry Juco from Iowa Western. 

Rosters change but for the next two years we're currently sitting at 9+ Juniors/Seniors for a guy that likes to roll out an eight man rotation.

Disagree on this. It’s not like we pushed Williams out, or he has ill will or feelings against Hoiberg or Nebraska. He didn’t see a path to immediate playing time, so he’s gonna pick a school that fits that want. Sallis may pick KU or another school but I doubt Williams will be a huge factor.

That may be but I was simply responding to @Chuck Taylor sarcastically saying not to worry about Donovan playing for Creighton because of their fans turning their nose up at a (former) NU commit not being worthy of playing in their "system".  And I just wanted to have an opportunity to take a cheap jab at that Van Smack wierdo.

Iowa State was his first Power 5 offer and their staff has been to see him the most I believe. Wouldn't count the Clones out either. And I don't think Bill Self will be in Lawrence in the fall of 2021. However Hunter and Donovan are buddies and I've seen them at various other high school games together, so we'll see.

Feels like Nebraska will be fine and Williams will be fine.  Nebraska has their coach of the future and we can bring in dudes. Williams is a fierce competitor and he more than likely will be successful in college and beyond.  With all due respect to Easley (who probably ends up on scholarship 2nd semester), it's a tragedy that we're this close to landing a Lincoln kid on scholarship for the first time since Jake Muhleisen.

Are you really a fierce competitor if you’re de-committing because you don’t think you can beat out players for the early playing time you desire?

I would love to gobble up every in-state kid worthy and able to play Div 1 basket at a Power 5 level.  However, this is spot on.

I’m encouraged Hoiberg didn’t tell the kid everything he wanted to hear to commit. He would have done way more damage to instate recruiting making promises he can’t keep. I still don’t find fault with either party. If early PT is Williams biggest want, he absolutely should go elsewhere - and Hoiberg is also in the right for not promising that.

You are interpreting what I said along the lines of Joe Burrow choosing LSU over staying at Ohio St or not coming to Nebraska because he wasn't fierce enough to compete at those places. What I'm saying is that wherever he goes, he's going to give it his all.  If he is not successful, it will not be for lack of trying.

I am not all that upset by this.  It is pretty clear he prioritizes being an alpha dog over things like winning.

Just heard OWH's Mike Sautter on the radio - paraphrasing, but he said DW wanted this coaching staff to re-recruit him and treat him with the same level of attention the previous coaching staff did, and they just weren't willing to do it, as they had bigger roster holes to try to fill & he was already committed.

 

Ultimately, DW just didn't have the relationship he wanted with this staff like he had with Lewis/Miles. After a coaching change, stuff like this happens, unfortunately.

 

Sautter also said DW could have signed in November, but he chose not to. NU was more than willing to take his signature and honor the commitment.

 

He guesses DW will have to play out the HS season whenever he can return and may have to play AAU ball in April as an unsigned senior to prove his knee is sound before bigger programs are willing to give him a commitable offer.  If he struggles with the knee, he may have to try prep school.

 

Tough break for DW, but he did have the chance to sign with NU in November. He probably would've been smarter signing with NU, giving it a shot, and if it didn't work out, transferring. 

 

But we'll see. Maybe he gets a few nice offers. Waiting till the 2nd signing period sometimes works in favor of the player, as some programs get pretty desperate if they have a bunch of transfers after the season.

Donovan was one of my favorites. Simply cuz he was a Lincoln kid. We don't have talent like him come through Lincoln like this ever. So this one kinda stings. I understand it though. By his sophomore year I think he would have a great shot at a starting gig though. But I understand that he wants a shot right away.

Nothing is guaranteed, this is big-time basketball. Methinks Donovan would have been better to have stuck to the 'sure thing' of a signature on a dotted line with Nebrasketball, then see how it plays out over the course of the next 2 years. Oh well, it's now solely on D.W. to make it happen on an injured leg, so really the pressure is all on him to do it. I hope he finds what he's looking for.

I don’t think we’ll see big freshmen recruiting classes from Hoiberg ever.  I think he recruits to have no weaknesses in his top 8 every year.  Whatever we get beyond that is a bonus.  But if you have an interested 5* in your back yard, you have to make sure he is a starter if you recruit him. 

 

I wouldn't automatically assume that Mack and Allen will be here that year as 23 year old fifth year seniors.  But, it would be fantastic if they are.
