  1. Berek is so European. In a great way. Raises his hands when he fouls, claps a lot, hustles and very fundamentally sound. But the best was when he went down during the game, I knew he really was hurt as he gave the international soccer sign for a sub and doctor. The twirling the hands over the head. I love his game and hope he is back soon.

No way do you switch out Janowski for GG. That make no sense at all. It's way more of a risk to go with an unproven freshman over a kid with a year of Big 10 experience. Gavin was solid at Rutgers so give him some more time. He just needs to have a "break out" game like Conner did.

  7. The team came out without intensity. Hard to believe. Amy must have "coached" them at the half. The intensity appeared in the second half. The lions threw up and made some REAL prayers in the first half, unbelievable. Others here will pick on specific players, so I won't. But the team has to move past Potts injury and get their collective sh*t together. Despite my angst, we came away with a 20+ point victory. In the past, we may have lost games like that. Win and advance.

  9. Second straight game where AM was outplayed for the majority of the game not only by an opponent’s big but also by two of her own front court teammates. Yes she had a good 4th qtr and finished with a misleading double double, but her numbers thus far are not as good as last year and we’ve only played one decent team.

    How good are we?

I will add in to the chorus saying I don't think this is a controversial take at all. There are two things that Keisei had here that Connor doesn't seem to at least so far: 1). As others have mentioned Keisei had that flair and showmanship that made him just a joy to watch work. Connor is just efficient and will get you that sneaky 22 points, and that's obviously not a bad thing. Keisei would light up the scoreboard and let you know about it. Also not a bad thing. 2). Keisei had a really great passing big man (both Derrick and Rienk) to play that two man game with. Jury's out on whether Berke or Andrew can play that role as well. I am kind of rubbing my hands together thinking about Rienk and Connor on the floor together. Hope we get to see that next year.

  13. Looking at Bart Torvik numbers this year compared to last year as of Dec. 3, we're very similar except much better defensively and worse offensively. However, we're trending up offensively the last few weeks...#28 offensively since the Bethune-Cookman game. One year ago today we lost by 29 vs. Creighton and then blew a 15-point halftime lead at Minnesota on Dec. 6. It was pretty doom and gloom on here and I'm sure no one was even dreaming of an NCAA bid. So I feel much better right now about this team than I did last year at this time. Last year our metrics were way, way worse this time of year and we spent all season climbing from the abyss. We just need to get through the 3 Hawaii games and Southern without a bad L. The one thing last year's team had going for it was no bad non-conference losses. Selection Sunday would be a lot less stressful if we go 3-0 in Hawaii, and given the field, we should be the favorite to win the tournament and I hope we play like it.

  14. I should add a note about computer models: When we're good, we're almost ALWAYS underrated to begin the year. It takes the computers a while to catch up to how good we are. And I think that's the case again this season. I think we're probably better than what the computer thinks we are.

    How good are we?

True. However, what I want to see is Essegian do it when the defensive game plan is to shut him down at all costs and the space he has to shoot is significant less.

    How good are we?

To me, clearly better than last year. Our ability to rotate players at the post will be huge in the BIG. Our lack of depth last year hurt us in many games. I hear the argument about not having athleticism but we have a lot of length. That can overcome some of the athleticism. We also have Juwan playing at a different (higher) level of intensity and productivity. As he goes, this team goes. And Brice is better than last year and appears to be on track to average 18+. I'm probably drinking too much big red Kool-Aid but I fully expect us to be in the tourney and a better seed than last year.

  21. Coley is a 3 and not a 4. It wasn't til this off season that she spent time at her natural position. Only going back to a 4 since Potts injury. Had she been able to play the 3 I think she would have had a better college career. That said she will do whatever coach asks of her to I will give her props for being a great team player even if she has not produced much on the court.

  23. NU played better on defense or at least with a little more effort. It would be nice if we blocked out, especially Markowski. Lindenwood made the most of what they had. Final score is misleading as it was not an easy game. Bozan and Petrie IMO got us the lead with some solid play in the third quarter. There should be a lot of teaching points on film of this game. If we play like this against 10-0 Minnesota our chances are slim.

  25. I’ve watched the second half of this NW vs Iowa game, and I gotta say, I’ve found myself rooting for Iowa. NW has big guys that whine about everything to pair with Barnhizer who whines about everything. One of NWs bigs even got a foul upgraded to a flagrant by acting as though someone Essegian’s size threw him down. Martinelli is really good and can make something out of nothing.

    How good are we?

Isn't this at least partly due to the fact we had more options to shoot those 3's last year? We had 3 other guys that could get hot and give you 4 or 5 threes in a game last year.

How real is us getting to the FT line and how real is the rebounding? The Creighton game was very promising for the FT line but let's start playing teams that play more than 0 to 1 post players and see what happens. The defensive effort against North Florida was encouraging to see us put forth effort against a lesser opponent.

Connor shot 23 threes in the last 2 games... he has to be so elated with his decision to transfer.

  36. I've been kind of afraid to say the same thing. Keisei did a lot. But, so far, Connor has shot it as well, probably plays better defense, is certainly longer, and I would say he's more athletic. Both moved really well without the ball. In fact, relentless movers without the ball. Connor's hoops IQ is way up there. Does he do more for you than Meah? If so, Meah to the bench, Berke to the paint and shift everyone up a spot to make room. But Connor's getting starters minutes anyway. Braxton is there for the opening tip.

    How good are we?

I said a little better but more importantly, I think that they’re ahead of where last year’s team was at this point. Not shooting the three well the first few games made us have to figure out other ways to score. We can get to the line and are good once we’re there. On defense we’re long and can rotate a lot of guys in without much of a dip in performance. I’m almost talking myself into saying “better than last year”. Right now, maybe a little better than a year ago. But our ceiling appears like it could be much higher than last year. Just gotta keep climbing to it, and when we get there we’ll be better than last year.

It'll be more about HOW we lose IF we lose. If it's close and we lose by a bucket or two, not as much as if we lose by 10-15 points.

  39. Don't look now, but Andrew Morgan is hitting at 40% (small sample size, but still.) Nevertheless, point taken. We need a semi-volume shooter hitting high 30s in addition to Essegian and Williams.

  41. They've certainly seemed to gel more quickly than in year's past. I expected Keisei would be difficult to replace, but it seems Connor has stepped up. And, with a healthy Berke, he might not even start. Berke seems to be at least as capable as Josiah Allick but different strengths. Braxton is a step down from Rienk, though. As is Andrew, quite frankly. But we have a bunch more length than a year ago, and that doesn't hurt at all. Brice, Juwan and Sam are all a year older and more experienced. And we have not just one PG but two. On paper, I feel like they should be slightly better than a year ago. And the results on the floor with beating CU and absolutely crushing Northern Florida make me feel at this point like I'd be majorly disappointed if we don't get a return trip to the NCAA tourney.

  44. I should have added: "Before you answer, be aware that Jamarques is currently averaging over 40% from 3 while Rollie is under 30%; also, Jamarques is currently dishing more assists per game and scoring more points per game while playing roughly the same number of minutes as Rollie. And Jamarques would have another year of eligibility." I'm not saying I would answer differently than everyone else so far. I'm just thinking it might be a closer question.
