  1. On the matter of the best path into the future for UNL and HCAW ... I will start with what I don't know. I don't claim to have a keen eye for talent or athleticism, or the process of developing and refining girls right out of HS in bb fundamentals. Nor am I any kind of expert in the X's and O's What I think I might know: AW's teams don't have enough players Too many players (my opinion) don't get much better as they move thru their years of eligibility The Huskers fail to execute in some basic situations that opponents seem to do well at. Prime examples are getting the last shot at the end of quarters and getting good shots on out of bounds plays (I know I am repeating) We don't have enough players. AW is in her seventh year. She had four-good-not-great years in SoDak. I can't think of any coaches who, after eleven years of better than average head coach achievement, suddenly experience skyrocketing improvement in recruiting, player development, coaching fundamentals, motivation, etc and then, in their 12th year, go on to greatness. While there may be exceptions, in general, what they are in their 11th year is as good as they get. So ..... ADTA, after taking note of the improvement in so many Big 10 teams, has a decision to make. Is he content with a fine and well behaved gentlewoman, players who stay out of trouble and who graduate, a team that occasionally pulls an upset, better than average fan support, but a program that consistently dwells below midpoint in conference standings? In making the decision, he also must bear in mind that some coaching changes intending improvement, end up doing the opposite.

  3. If you rewatch the game, check out Clark at about the 3:45 mark of the 2nd quarter. She's standing with the ball at the top of the key, and probably shuffles her feet 4 or 5 times. Ref is right there.

  4. Some of us WBB fans feel that the Lincoln/Omaha media are professional Amy Williams apologists, unwilling to put her feet to the fire and ask her the hard hitting questions. So the fact that you can at least acknowledge that the current state of Amy’s program is disappointing is actually a bit encouraging. Thank you.

  5. 33 of our 64 shot attempts were 3's, and we made 7. That's a loser vs anyone. The 3 was meant to make the game more entertaining, but it makes us difficult to watch IMO. Too many players never bother to learn how to score any other way.

    IOWA GAME DAY THREAD

I'm always at least a little disappointed but obviously not surprised. Most if not all of the posters here are pretty much on point. Shots just needed to fall quite a bit more often than they did- some of that due to poor shot selection. Made a 9-0 run by hitting 3 threes in a row but can't expect to live on that naturally. Execution not good again for the most part- yes their defense has something to do with that as in every game but some errors were simply unforced which is endemic for this team. Passes have to be smarter and crisper among other issues. Offense seems mostly limited to inside post-up scoring or shooting 3s, which you need to be able to convert at a better % than we have. Not saying all that would have made a difference in this game, simply an analysis of how to perform better overall in games. Can they "bring it" at Illinois? It's up to them to bounce back, tho as a fan I'd be a bit surprised to see a victory. How much do they want to keep playing (into the postseason particularly)? We shall see.

Meh. I can’t say that I’m surprised, I can’t even say that I’m that disappointed. Iowa’s just better than us, friends. Better players. Better team chemistry. Better coaches. Better schemes. (Did I mention better coaches? Well, it bears repeating)

Not sure comparing Amy's and Connie's first years are that much alike. If the average fan looks at Connie's first roster, not sure they will recognize any names, other than a couple of volleyball players. Amy had Shepard, Simon, Whitish, Cincore, Eliely.... I'm not advocating firing Williams. Just don't agree with your post.

14,289 was the annouced attendance. About half of the 300 level was full. And the main floor consessions was open for the first time this year. Also the flow was good getting into the buiolding. I had feared that it would be a CLUSTER FU&* but it was smooth as silk. Sorry for all of the typeos, I have a new key board and the key r touchey.

We shot 35%, ....they shot 55% overall You can debate all kinds of other stuff, but when your that outclassed scoring....the games over. Our 3 shooting was 19%...them 47%. But liked our efforts. Fought hard, did the best we could. It just won't happen when your shooting doesn't match the other efforts. Nice crowd. Congrats to everyone involved. The girls toughed it out, no matter the odds. They should keep their heads up after that effort.

Still in the game, and have been competitive- esp. on defense in which I'm sure they took the previous performance to heart. Let them go on a little run at the end of the half unfortunately. Keep after them, ladies, the crowd is behind you. GBR!!

Different offensive and defensive schemes by two different teams. Each are doing it how the coaches have planned. Positioning of the other players affect how you can make passes.

Don’t know if PBA will be sold out or not, but it will by far and away be the biggest WBB crowd of this season. Good news - a full or near-full arena looks good on BTN. Get the feeling there will be more than a few Iowa fans in PBA today.

  23. Defense requires effort. Effort was not there against Minnesota. A coach shouldn’t have to coach effort. It makes me think the team has given up on the season. Yes, we scored plenty of points but does that matter if we can’t get stops on one of the weakest teams in the league? Looking ahead we have no one to replace Bourne on the current roster and Jaz, if she leaves, is irreplaceable. Weidener’s return can not compensate for our personnel losses. MM might be the only bench player that can become a starter. The rest are role players at best.

Below is Amy's Big Ten win/loss record in the conference. This pretty much confirms that she is a mediocre coach with more losses than wins! NE should at least have more wins than losses over time. I think our fans overrate out talent. It's natural to like our players. We're maybe above average with 4 players, and dramatically below average with the depth. In any event, I will be real--if we don't up our recruiting, we'll stay mediocre at best. And we used to be way better than that. And we're losing ground to teams that have hired new coaches more recently than us. I'd opt for a different description--average team, average coach. I hope whatever needs to be fixed is, but 7 years is a long track record. People can change and improve. Let's hope it happens here.

  28. As I remember the first meeting, DW had no problem scoring against and drawing fouls against Reese. It was their backup big (Emilien?) who completely stopped DW - the backup was a thicker dude, less of a shot blocker than Reese. DW seems to have better success vs shot blocker types. Maybe we go with 2 bigs when the backup comes in so we can get DW matched up against the 4? Regardless, we only took 14 3s in that first matchup - we've been at 20+ 3s in each of the last four games, including 28 at Rutgers. We'll be giving Maryland a far different look offensively than we did the first time.

    Portal Watch

PORTAL STUFF I tend to not get too wound up about the portal, when it comes to women's basketball. There's a million different factors that can make or break your chances at getting a better player than you currently have. In general rough numbers, only about 25-30% are moved to a better situation than they left. About the same percentage just the opposite, and many don't get picked up at all so go to Jr College, or Div 2 or 3 2021-2022 Stats Total transfer out 1,331 ALL CLASSIFICATIONS Grad transfers 386 341 D-1 schools had at least one transfer Power 5 ONLY 65 schools transfer out 269 transfer in 182 so about 1/3 didn't get to a better situation into another Power 5 school, and end up at lower Div 1, 2 or 3 school Non P5 out 1062 in 643 Lastly....A small percentage return back to same school. These stats can be off a little....just quick research. What's all mean...? There were only 182 Power5 transfers in. So those that transfer either requested to contact a school, or were recruited to transfer from the portal. Mostly the top Power 5 schools can get highly rated transfers. They have superior recruiting ability, are top 25 rated schools. Example: Ohio State is on that list, does it a lot. The very best power 5 schools can get the pick of the litter so to speak. (and does so every year.) So are we a top 25 rated school, are we a top recruiting school? Are we a desired destination program now? etc etc Trying to be realistic. The pickings are pretty thin. We obviously have not been recruiting transfers. It seems we just haven't tried particularly. Will their be a change of heart ? There's lots more involved....this is a quick look. AND to add some perspective......there were about 412,000 high school girls basketball players last year
