    Andrew White III

I'm with throwback: I have no idea whom Matt's talking to, who say that they're disappointed in Andrew White. Sure, there are areas where he could improve, but he has more than delivered. Anyone who says they're disappointed in White doesn't know/understand the game or this team. He's taking 34% of the TEAM'S 3-point attempts. Contemplate that for a moment. He has more than twice as many attempts as the next-most prolific 3-point shooter on the squad. Well, yeah, big deal, Terran Petteway took a lot more shots than anyone else, too. Well, but Petteway might hit 33% of his treys. Andrew White leads the team in 3-point accuracy by a long margin. He's hitting 44% of his shots and the next closest player in terms of accuracy is just over 40.5% Which means that Andrew White has accounted for a staggering 44% of our made 3-pointers this season. Almost half. And that's with a hand in his face and defenses keying on him. And he's solid otherwise, never takes plays off, never pouts or sulks, but just gives his all every moment he's on the floor. I cannot fathom why anyone would say they're disappointed in Andrew White. You can identify areas where he could improve. Hell, all the players have something they could get better at. But there's a huge difference between saying there's some aspect of the game he could get better at and saying that he's been a disappointment.

Have been thoroughly impressed with his game to this point - he is performing at the top end of where I thought/hoped he could be, and he has stepped up his game even more since B1G play began. So something Matt Davison said on the pre-game show Saturday caught me off guard. Paraphrasing - he said many fans who talk to him about White are fixated on the shortcomings in his game, rather than his strengths, almost as if they're disappointed in what NU is seeing from him. (To clarify, Matt wasn't saying he was negative about White's game; rather, fans who speak with him about White seem to want to talk about the negatives.) Are NU fans really unhappy with White's contributions? That has to be a small sample size, right? Obviously his 3-pt shooting has lived up to the billing. His rebounding especially has surprised me, and he seems to be gaining more confidence in that area. I really liked Saturday how he was struggling with the 3 early on - in part because Illinois was focused on him - but he did a good job getting to the rim a few times late in the half, which ended up in FTs. Then he was outstanding in the 2nd half. Sure he has a few holes in his game, nearly every player at this level does. He struggles with turnovers at times, and he doesn't have a lot of assists. But what he has brought to NU this season has been tremendous. We certainly wouldn't be anywhere near 11-8/3-3 without him, I don't believe. Plus he seems to be a natural leader by example, appears to do everything the right way. Just wondering if anyone else heard that on the pregame and whether I had misinterpreted what was said. White's Stats: 17.5 ppg (1st on team) 52.3% FG 44.1% 3FG 78.6% FT 6.3 rebounds pg (1st on team)

AW3 is the first player on our team in a LONG time that I can safely say I don't cringe when he takes a 3. And if his feet are set I feel like it's going in pretty much out of his hands. Shocked, in fact if he misses. This is a weapon that we just haven't had maybe since the good ol Pike days. And it makes everyone around him that much more of a weapon as well. Anyone that can't recognize this is, well, just ignorant about the game I guess.

  10. Don't plan on that happening. Exactly how many times do you hear about the "Point of Emphasis" being quality officiating. Unless they totally screw up and say something off color, most anything dealing with officials is done behind closed doors. Is this the new Common Core Officiating?

You can take him away if you want and he can't single-handedly take over the end of a game. Thus, the biggest problem he might have is that he's not Terran Petteway, which is if you're only looking at the positives of TP's game. He's the most effective scorer we've had since Marcus Perry in 2007. He's also made himself more than just a shooter. If people are actually griping about White, it's because he's this year's edition of let's focus on the flaws of our best player.

  13. Bruce Chubick had a few things to say about Chang on 93.7 Friday. http://www.theticketfm.com/podcasts/gaskinsstephens/2016_01_15_2_Chubick.mp3 Fast forward to 12:40 - only lasts about 30 seconds. Said he has seen Chang play a lot and he has a big upside. Would be a great pickup for NU if Chang can reach his potential and if NU can get him.

From the way he plays you can tell that MJ is a consummate all-around player. He's capable of making jumpers, post-moves, FTs, rebound, defend, pass, et al. Glad he's a part of the Nebrasketball team for several more years.

All of this discussion and we haven't really even discussed how athletic and strong a rebounder he is. For a guy that isn't "explosive" on the offensive end, the dude is swiping defensive rebounds well above the rim. He crashes the boards hard.

  19. I think he was waiting to see if he got any better offers, don't quote me on that, but I think I remember seeing that somewhere. If that was the case he benefited with the delay, as he's gaining the offers/interest now. Thanks - makes sense - it seems like big kids often are in huge demand for the late signing period. Plus big kids sometimes may suddenly show improvement in their senior year. So it makes sense for some of them to wait and see, rather than signing in November. Should anyone try to join the party late, I just hope he remembers who has been recruiting him a long time.

It's just such a sweet shot. When it goes in, just about every time, it hits the back iron with that satisfying "thunk" and down. I can picture it with my eyes closed.

  21. http://blogs.post-gazette.com/sports/college/dukes-dispatches/45902-duquesne-basketball-mailbag-jan-18 Sounds like Tarin is impressing during practice and is expected to be the starting PG for Duquesne next year. Given that our rotation of Benny, Glynn, and Tai at the guard spots is starting to really gel, it looks like Smith transferring may have worked out best for all parties. Hard to say whether having one more option would make our guard play better, or whether splitting the minutes among 4 players instead of only 3 would have stunted the other guys' development.

I love Drew III. Sure, it is much easier to dwell on a few areas of opportunity rather than the plethora of positives he brings to the floor. He is a college kid, so I encourage our "fans" to dismiss the negativity and dwell on the stuff he does well.

  31. Not to be nit picky, but how on earth does the very first dribble of the game off the tip not get called a double dribble? You can clearly see it in the video how he spins it in front of him, grabs it with two hands, and then dribbles it again! lol Well, at least it wasn't as bad as the travel Illinois got away with in Lincoln, where the player managed to go from the top of the key without dribbling for a dunk....and didn't travel said the refs....

  32. Out-coached? That sounds a little cocky, doesn't it? I was so puzzled by their game plan I half expected Groce to commit how he was proud of their team shutting down Petteway.

Interesting comparison - Chubick was actually on 93.7 Friday and they asked him that question. If I remember right, he thought he was more like Morrow as a freshman than Jacobson, after Chubick had taken his redshirt year of course. Chubick said he needed the redshirt, but Morrow is far more ready coming in physically. http://www.theticketfm.com/podcasts/gaskinsstephens/2016_01_15_2_Chubick.mp3 (Hope I linked that podcast right) And Jacobson definitely looks like someone who could be in the 9-12 ppg and 5-8 rpg numbers by the time he's a senior. It'll also depend on what the NU roster looks like in 3 years of course. But I like the trajectory he's on, as well as all of the other freshmen.

  35. There's a chance we have success getting to the rim on MSU. Wisky did today and shot 36 free throws and they really aren't too much different than we are I didn't get a chance to watch their game. If we can get to the rim, that would be very helpful. Ted Valentine was one the refs. That probably explains it a bit On the negative side, the refs won't let us shoot 36 free throws in East Lansing.

  36. My understanding it that all we need to get into the NIT is a winning record. They still have to get an at large bid. Give it a few years... pretty soon you can have a 5-7 record and still make the post season

Our resume will look pretty good with conference wins on it... we have one bad OOC loss. Remember, the committee also looks at how a team finished the season. A Nebraska team who started off 0-3 in conference and finished 11-4 will look pretty good and will have shown the improvement to compete at a high level. We have a long ways to go to see how this plays out.

  41. Just wanted to say how happy I am for Tai. His offense has come along now that he's loving the rim. Seems like the extra confidence is helping beyond the arc too. His defense, as always, is very good.

  43. Coming off of the bench has been a boon for Tai. Aggressiveness was been a major key to Webster stepping up as of late (that Iowa game was a thing of beauty for #0). Overall, it is great news for Nebrasketball & its rotation being firmed up these past several games in the B1G. Same 'boon' could be said of Glynn Watson lately as his role as a starter stepping up big-time. Webster's and Watson's aggressiveness is a key for both of them.

  44. I'll throw my opinion out there with about half the season gone. Jessica Shephard. I expected her to be really good on offense and she is. Free throw shooting could be better but oh well. Her defense is ok but will probably get better with time. Rachael Theriot. She seems inconsistent on offense and defense this year. We need her to step up her offense every game. Not sure what her injury is or how it affects her. Her passing has to improve also. Natalie Romeo. I've been impressed with her offense this year. Always a threat at the 3 point line. Defense is fair. Allie Havers. This is by far her best year. Wish she was more aggressive on rebounding. Last year it seemed like she was always falling down for whatever reason. Seems a little stronger this year. Kyndal Clark. When she joined the team I was really excited. I thought by having her with her scoring ability, especially from the 3 point line, that this would really improve our team. Unfortunately for whatever reason, she's lost confidence in her offense abilities. Her 3 point shooting is not good. Going from being the number one scorer on your team to a role player hasn't worked well for her. Rachel Blackburn. From what I've seen this year I don't know if she has any down low offensive moves. She hasn't shown that she's a scorer down low but then they never throw her the ball much with Shephard being down low. She seems like a hustler though. Being sick hasn't help her progress. Jasmine Cincore. Of all the players, I'm disappointed in her ball handling and shooting ability this year. I thought she was going to be a lot better player. I hate to say it but it seems like when she touches the ball a turnover is about to happen. Anya Kalenta. Gives good minutes off the bench. Can shoot the ball. Maddie Simon. With her injury it's hard to say. I'm hoping next year she'll be a real asset. Esther Ramacieri. I hope nobody takes offence to this but Esther is not a division I player. Not sure why Connie recruited her. She played about half the game the other day and didn't take a shot or even think about it. Even in mop up duty she won't think about shooting. There are two things that stand out to me this year. I've never seen a Connie Yori team give up so many uncontested layups as I have this year. All the teams guards just dribble right down the lane and have many easy layups. Our guards let them fly by and there is seldom any help defense. Not sure what gives on that. Secondly, we are getting beat on rebounds that we should have. Especially the other team is getting so many offensive rebounds and put backs. Lots of times we have position for the rebound and we don't get it. Lots of times we are just outhustled. Anyway, these were my thoughts. It will be interesting to see how we finish this year out.
