Agree with this to a point. If there's a transfer that fits, I'd obviously rather add that player than sign nobody and give it too Menke again. The coaches are looking for specific pieces. They identify talent, figure out if that player will fit the system, and consider things like coachability, work ethic, attitude, mindset, probability of buying in, etc. They aren't going to target a player just to fill a slot. It's why we haven't heard about us considering some of these transfers. Just because they can do such and such on paper, doesn't mean they could automatically come in and help this Nebraska team next season. This is why I won't let myself be disappointed if we don't end up using every scholarship for next season. The coaches are trying like heck to add useful pieces. If those players they've recruited pick another school, they pick another school. They've done everything they can to land the player, but if they don't want to be here, you probably don't want them and what really can you do? We can't afford a bad apple, can't afford another Biggs. Sure, it's disappointing when a Deng picks a Baylor but what can you do? I see quite a few people who have been "majorly disappointed" in recruiting so far with this staff and people who feel we should have landed some "wow" recruits or high-profile guys already. To this I say, yeah but take a step back and look at the program. I'll admit, with the way things have gone and the quick turnaround, I would've thought we would have landed more of the guys we've been after. But..look at the reasons for the turnaround that's happened faster than anyone thought. It's happened without a single "wow" or highly rated recruit. Shields. His play can be attributed to this staff and player development. Neither Petteway nor Pitchford were considered highly rated or high profile guys when they transferred here. Nice additions, sure, but they weren't expected by the general fans to be all-stars. Again, the staff is identifying this talent with a specific plan in place and then developing the talent. Petteway is a beast and we'll see how this staff molds Pitchford in the offseason. For next season already this staff is adding Tarin Smith, Hammond, Ayegba, and getting Fuller on the court for the first time. I'm guessing we'll be more than pleasantly surprised with a couple of these guys and they turn out to be better than expected. They were each recruited to fill a specific need with a plan in place. It's hard for me to have a negative outlook on the recruiting so far. With recruiting you're gonna be denied way more times than you connect. 2015 should be the year. It's been said here before but going by the number of 'higher profile' guys on the radar, some have to say yes. The staff has had enough time building relationships to get this done. They've identified and offered more recruits that fit the program and the plan. This staff has it together. It's building.6 points

I saw where 87% of "BCS" schools had signed their allotted classes in the fall signing period and a portion of the 13% left are guys like Turner that we would have no chance of landing. This leaves a small amount of room to find recruits once the season actually starts. Recruiting for hoops is usually 2 years out. This fall is the class they attacked right when they got on campus. If this year doesnt produce with the connections, tournament run, facilities, etc then I think we can really start to question.3 points -

.I'd rather fill it with a walk on than fling schollies at anybody and everybody until the spot is filled. I wouldn't call it a major failure either. They've targeted certain players, recruited them hard, and if they say no, they say no. Major failure on the coaches part? How? There's gonna be a lot of this opinion if we don't fill out the class. And that's fine, I just don't agree that it's a failure on the coaches end. Disappointing, yes, but failure, no. Specific targets for a specific plan not a casting net to ensure that we fill all the spots.3 points -

Firstly, the worst that could be said about Doc was exactly what you've said in defense of Bill Callahan. Anyone who knows what was going on inside that program knows that you cannot fault Doc's effort. Secondly, SOB, are you really trying to suggest that you have to have played the game at a high level in order to be a competent coach at a high level? How quickly do you want to retract that comment?2 points -

New assistant coach?
Silverbacked1 reacted to Row6Seat10 for a topic
Word’s been pretty mum on the assistant coach search but I suppose we’ll hear fairly soon of some candidates that may have been contacted. I think the new coach must have a good recruiting reputation of the west coast as we have been getting a lot of good players from there. There have been a few head coaches let go since the season ended so it wouldn’t surprise me if some of them may have been contacted. I do know this job would be a step up for a lot of coaches interested in the job. Most likely the new assistant coach is going to get a substantial raise from their previous job when he or she accepts the job. Plus the fact they would have access to the best women's college basketball facilities in the nation. Don’t shoot the messenger as I’m just throwing out names whom I think would be interested in the job. Starting with my top preference of who I would like to see Nebraska interview for the job, here is my list. --------------------- Terri Mitchell - recently let go from the head coaching position at Marquette after 18 years. Took her Marquette team to 14 post season tournaments. Could recruit the Big Ten footprint very well. BIO Tony Newnan - assistant coach at UCLA. Considered one of the best defensive minds in the woman’s game. BIO Curtis Lloyd - associate head coach under recently let go Minnesota head coach Pam Borton. Is known for his recruiting prowess in Texas. BIO Pam Borton - recently let go as Minnesota's head coach. Served at that capacity for 13 years. Guided the Golden Gophers to a Final Four, three Sweet Sixteens, six NCAA Tournament appearances and three seasons of 25 or more wins. Knows the B1G and it's recruiting footprint. BIO Allison Guth - two year assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northwestern considered a great recruiter. Helped pull in one of the best recruiting classes in the nation last season for Northwestern. BIO Jina Johansen - obviously the Husker connection. The former Husker is now embarking on year 6 as head coach for the University of Dallas. BIO Margaret Richards - like Jina, the Husker connection. Has extensive coaching experience since leaving NU. Going into her fourth season as an assistant coach to ex Husker assistant coach Michelle Clark/Heard at Western Kentucky. BIO Kara Lawson - providing she would leave her ESPN gig. Has a name well known in the women’s basketball world. Plays in the WNBA and went to college at Tennessee. A longshot indeed. BIO Who would you like to see on the sidelines at the Vault next season?1 point -

Yes. It's easy to have the "how could you pass on Nebraska" attitude. Best facilities, great school, great season last year etc. But despite what we think and how great we think we are, other teams are still better and may have just as much, if not more to offer. They're also are a small private religious school in a top basketball conference that play the type of zone defense perfect for his length. Taking away the alleged funny business card, it's not difficult to imagine Deng legitimately choosing Baylor as best for him.1 point

Yeah, I'm not sure I buy into failing to land our chosen targets as ever being a positive. If Miles didn't feel like we wanted them or needed them, we wouldn't be pursuing them. I doubt Miles is 'aww shucks, we'll get em next year'. Next year is critical. You have high expectations. He needs to win again or last year looks like a fluke and it's hard to recruit. Miles is not going to sacrifice 2014-2015 for the sake of the following year or recruiting class. We can't do that...one of the hazards of being so far ahead of schedule! That might just be the worst post in the history of this board. Callahan had disdain for Nebraska and Nebraskans, and you praise him. He refused to even wear anything with Husker colors his last 2 months. He made more than Doc, and at the end just wanted to show off his offense no matter how bad we got beat. His own ego ruled as he swirled down the drain. Doc was completely opposite--competed like crazy and kept trying to the bitter end. I agreed with Dr. Tom's decision to make a change at that point, but it wasn't about lack of effort. You must not have been at any of the practices I went to. Doc never quit, and it's a pathetic cheap shot to suggest he did. BC and his disdain, really? Bo looked a lot better with BC recruits than he does with his own. Bo tells the whole state to eff off, gets countless penalties called on himself, embarrasses NU with his actions and folks continue to support him. BC called TO a crusty old f$&k and it's not far from truth but since he was later fired by TO its easy to pile on. BC designed players and coaches facilities second to none and if he was not loyal to a fault to his DC he may still be the NU coach. Effort was not his problem, he was just not a good HC, not his fault he was all NU could find to take the job. Red is spot on about Doc, he quit, period. Don't care if he cried at the end, don't care if he had a bad stretch of luck with recruits or injuries. He coached and developed players like someone who never played the game at a high level, oh wait.... Never mind. Bill, is that you?1 point -

Heck, even Matt Davison is the best. Thanks to all of you for your meaningful, funny, heartfelt and insightful discourse on the site. I've enjoyed it for many years.
