hhcmatt Posted October 28, 2021 Report Posted October 28, 2021 If it had been an official game last night, the 71.55% eFG% would have been the best of the Fred Hoiberg era. Nebraska's 50% from 3 (11-22) would have been tied for 3rd best. Quote
75unlgrad Posted October 28, 2021 Report Posted October 28, 2021 I don't know why Andre is so far down the list. I thought he was really coming on last season and hoped for an even bigger jump in improvement this fall. It bothered my that he was left out of the team picture. That isn't right. The picture should have been rescheduled. Are they sending a message to Andre that we don't want him? I don't get it. To me, the most explosive offensive starting five would be: 1. Verge 2. B. McGowens 3. Edwards 4. Breidenbach/Mayen 5. Andre (Four of these potential starters are freshmen in eligibility -- the future looks good.) BigTate 1 Quote
75unlgrad Posted October 28, 2021 Report Posted October 28, 2021 Maybe Robin could provide more information concerning Andre's lack of playing time. Are the coaches telling him that he is the 3rd option at the post position behind Walker and Breidenbach? My thoughts coming into the season were that Walker and Andre would share the duties in the post and Mayen and Breidenbach would share the power forward position. This would give us two rim protectors/rebounders on the floor at the same time. Rebounding has been a major problem for us and we didn't rebound very well against Peru State. I know that we are a 'positionless' offense but we can't keep getting killed on the boards. We give up way toooo many second opportunities. I think we will need two 'bigs' on the floor for major minutes in the conference games. And when Keon Edwards is at the small forward position, we will have three legitimate rebounders in the game. I don't think Team Pictures is something that you can just reschedule on a whim. He was sick, so it isn't like we planned the picture without him. I think you might be reading a too much into that. When it comes to Andre and his PT, I agree with you that I thought he was really coming on, and I think he has made a big jump. But there are only so many minutes that go around. It'll be a dogfight for PT this year, and we're going to have some good players that don't play a ton on certain nights. Not saying that this is what is going on, but we don't know what goes on in practice. Unlike other years, there isn't a set 8-9 that are probably going to play. We have a legit roster that goes 12-13 deep in terms of people that could play a role. So you're going to have to bring it every day. There is a role for Andre on this team, but he's going to have to accept that role too. Nothing is going to be guaranteed this year. I absolutely do not think that Fred and Co are in any way trying to push him out the door. Personally, I loved Andre's response when he got into the game last night. From the sounds of it from those that may have been there, his enthusiasm may have been lacking a bit on the bench. BUT when he got in he "fought" for more PT and didn't mope around. That to me shows that he is willing to fight for his PT, but that fight is going to be an every day battle. BigTate 1 Quote

I didn't have this issue last spring when I did baseball. I hope they fix that as the video quality was 3rd rate. Quote
MandRHusker Posted October 28, 2021 Report Posted October 28, 2021 Competition is a good thing. If someone is cold, then you have someone else who can step in. Regarding Andres, I know Fred loves Walker’s leadership and Heem’s basketball IQ and ability to hit the 3, something important to make Fred’s offense sing. But Andres made a strong case for playing time. This kind of competition is a good thing! Quote
hhcmatt Posted October 28, 2021 Report Posted October 28, 2021 There are several B1G preseason all-conference teams made up of just centers. Of the guys who didn't make it into the game in the first half, Andre easily has the clearest path to future playing time. BigTate and basketballjones 2 Quote

Avery Bradley type player - not really a point guard or a shooting guard, but an elite perimeter defender who just takes what comes to him on the offensive end and gets some buckets in transition. He's been one of the top two scoring options on very poor teams the last three years. Winning basketball is all about efficiency, and the best teams have efficient top scorers. Trey just doesn't have that ability. Nothing wrong with that, he can still be one of the most valuable players on the team. I loved the way he played last night. Didn't force anything offensively, 5:1 assist to turnovers, 3 steals and played relentless defense. Points will still come his way if he plays like that, especially if he shoots 38% from three again this year. If I had to guess, I think that's why Hoiberg started CJ over Verge. I think that's also why there was talk of starting Wilhelm over Walker (which, as far as I can tell, was just an unsubstantiated rumor started by ... some reporter guy on Rivals.) Trey is not a high volume shooter and he's not going to be one of your most potent offensive weapons. So, who do you put out there with him to maximize the driving lanes for Bryce? Because Trey isn't going to do that. Is the answer Verge? Well, Verge is another slasher whom you would not expect, based on past experience, to be a perimeter shooting specialist. Walker definitely won't be the guy who spreads the floor. Lat can, but you need more than just Lat. So ... CJ? And leave Walker in there? Of course, that didn't work out splendidly. Not that CJ isn't a great shooter. But you need someone with the PG qualities of Verge to get things started. So, now, if Verge starts ... who do you put out there with him? And why? Quote

Completely agree with this. I think Hoiberg would rather not have Verge, Trey and Walker on the floor together much. Along with Bryce and Lat, who we know can both shoot the ball but neither have proven they can do it consistently at this level yet. In the game thread, before Verge entered the game, I said I thought he was our best at creating for himself AND for others. He absolutely needs to be in the game from the start to set the pace for this team. But he’d be at his best with some pure shooters around him. And those other four starters might not give him enough space to do what he does best. Wing defenders are going to collapse in on that pick n roll with Verge and Walker and our wings are going to have to knock down threes at a good clip. This is why Hoiberg keeps saying the hardest thing about his job is figuring out rotations and getting players to accept roles. I actually think Trey would be a great spark off the bench and could still play the same amount of minutes. But it’d be hard to ask a four year starter, whose freshman brother is in the starting lineup, to come off the bench. Hooper and HuscurAdam 1 1 Quote
OurDecay Posted October 29, 2021 Report Posted October 29, 2021 (edited) With regards to concerns about folks at the end of our rotations not getting many minutes…it’s worth restating that we are due to lose quite a number of players at the end of this season - so a guy like Andre (whom I am a big fan of) still has plenty of time down the road to have a major role. You lose both your starting 4 & 5 after this year, and even with a guy like Keita coming in there will be plenty of opportunities. Likewise, it might be a challenge to find minutes for all those wings this year, but the roster will look different in 2022. all I know is…this is the deepest NU team I can recall in a very long time and it is a great problem to have p.s. I still cannot get over the hands our bigs have. We have had a list of stone-handed bigs here in recent history from Jordy to Yvan to Duby to others. It’s refreshing Edited October 29, 2021 by OurDecay Norm Peterson and millerhusker 1 1 Quote

After going through a stretch of bigs with absolute stone hands, it's amazing to have three bigs on the roster who pretty much grab everything thrown their way. It's really a testament to how much more natural basketball skill our big men have right now vs. many we've had in the recent past. Quote

huskerbill85 Posted October 29, 2021 Report Posted October 29, 2021 Pre season first game as a team so doesnt mean much. If it were OSU and not Peru St we lose. Saw some of the same movie poor perimeter defense, lack of communication at times, missed free throws. All things that can be fixed. Wont have long stretches going scoreless with this team. 4 guys who can have a big game scoring on any night, dont think I've seen a Husker team with this many guys who can distribute the ball, and oh baby some tremendous athletes. Clean up a few things and this team can beat anybody on any given night. Quote
