    Wilhelm Breidenbach gone

if someone uproots their life to come and wear my school's colors, I'll get their back as long as they're not behaaving like a two-legged crime spree. it's uncoommon that decisions like thiis are made in a vacuum. i'm confident that the staff gave him every support possible.

  2. I always hate people kicking a guy when he’s down. Message boards are the worst: internet geniuses hiding behind anonymity . . . and trashing a kid. Kinda pathetic, if you ask me (though no one ever has).

  3. Nope. Not that it matters. I liked him because I viewed him as a tough mother. He seemed willing to do the dirty work that few appreciate. He had bad wheels that he worked to overcome. He had a good left hand around the basket and good hands. He was criticized for his clumsiness which is fair. He was criticized for his outside shot...but he apparently was greenlighted by someone. I just think more highly of him than many of my brethren, and for that, I do not apologize.

  4. Last season for the Tigers, Mathurin averaged 20.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game in 27 contests. The 5-foot-10 guard had over 30 Division I offers in hand, including Kansas State, Colorado, Purdue, Creighton and Wisconsin, before picking Nebraska. She was also a first-team All-State selection for the Tulsa World and the Ms. Outside winner in 2022-23, helping Broken Arrow return to the 6A state tournament for the first time since 2016.

    Intangibles

I’m All About “Glue Guys” & “Lunch Pail Guys” but Wilhelm I think is better served playing where he isn’t so Athletically overmatched. He couldn’t shoot off the dribble, drive by defenders or score with his back to the basket. I’m sure he’ll find a School that better suits his needs, & he’ll always be a Husker. #GBR

  6. I probably got that started, so blame me. I've been calling him that since we first signed him. Rivals lists him at 6'7, 210#, which, coming out of HS, is pretty beefy. That's about Juwan Gary's dimensions. And, when I look at his game, it just strikes me that it translates more to a stretch 4 than a shooting guard. I think his frame will easily support another 20-25 pounds of muscle. He has good range as a shooter, but I don't see him having the quickness to guard Big Ten 1s and 2s.

  7. He didn’t do the dirty work… you didn’t do the spelling work. I think that’s the comparison he was making.

    Denim Dawson

I'm saying both DD and WB were a couple of hustle guys that got recruited over and are transferring for more playing time. I thought it was silly to bring up DD not being loyal or such nonsense, especially since we probably told him to look elsewhere.

    Intangibles

In my narrow little mind, we lost a good player in Wilhelm yesterday. He had a "unique" style that I respected, mostly because first and foremost, he seemed to respect a team first attitude that is sorely absent all too often in the game today. But hey, he is gone, we now move on. So this thread is not about him. Rather, the focus is on team play, and the intangibles that are sometimes seen, but oftentimes are missed; with the focus more on the visible measurables, such as points, rebounds and assists. Intangibles include stuff like attitude, effort and communication. Could also include leadership; on the floor, academically, in the locker room, in the weight room, on the sideline or even while attending non- basketball related functions. On the floor, it may include setting proper picks, boxing out your man, calling out picks, diving for loose balls, picking up teammates both physically and mentally. It means being an enforcer if necessary, or any other number of immeasurables. Not every player is going to be the star or superstar, no matter the level. You have to have the players that will do the dirty work that makes a team a team. Teams are littered with them throughout history. The best teams always have them. We wonder who are stars are going to be next season; but it is also important to know who are grinders will be as well. Perhaps Josiah? Perhaps Gary? Perhaps Hoiberg? We shall see. Digressing for a moment...I think we loss one as the door hits Briedenbach's ass on his way to the transfer portal.

  15. I would have liked to see him stick around one more year to see if he could develop into the player Hoiberg thought he would be. My biggest complaint about him was I felt that he would throw his hands up in the air and look at the refs way too much when things didn’t go his way. That was something I noticed about him when I watched a couple of his high school games that were on tv. I’m not a big fan of players do that. He seems like a good kid. I do wish him the best and hope he does well wherever he goes.

    Denim Dawson

Might have been the timing or not being here as long or not being as highly rated out of HS but feels like Denim Dawson got a bit of a raw deal here because it seems like he and WB transferred for essentially the same reason.

    Brice Williams is N

I’ll say it right now, of all our recent additions Brice has the greatest “chance” to have a Petteway/Palmer type impact. Not saying he will, but I think he has that type of upside.

  20. Wilhelm had some good moments. He had some bad moments. But he wasn't going to be the reason why we made the tournament. No bad vibes for him. Did what he could for this program and that's all we can ask for.

  21. I really wish he’d have given it 1 more year. He’s got a weird, quirky style no doubt. But I think there was something there.

  23. Hope he finds a place that will make him happy. Always gave good effort which is something that shouldn’t have to be coached.

    Wilhelm Breidenbach gone

Nobody is doubting he was a good kid as are hundreds of kids on teams all over the county. That doesn't mean you keep them on scholarship especially where Fred is coaching to keep his job. He doesn't have the time for long term development right now. The reality of it is that he has not developed into the player we all hoped he could be. Certainly he still could do that and hope he does but think it is in our best interest for him to try and develop his game at a different school.

    Darian White is N

They need both, IMO, and an enforcer post, too. White will help, tho. If she can get to the rim with consistency, draw fouls, make FTs, that's a big boost. Plus, she can defend and she'll bring a note of toughness.
