  1. It's no secret that Hoiberg started his tenure here in what became a less desired time, given COVID threw everything into disarray. It's also no secret that he didn't have the same momentum as joining a new conference, new dedicated basketball practice facility, and construction being completed on a brand new stadium. It's unfortunate. It really is. But all that aside, how has he performed in relation to his other Power 6 peers? Active P6 Coaches Starting in 2019 (excl. While your descriptions seem accurate, you missed one key word: Recruiting. Fred doesn’t do much of it.

  3. Frustrating that we have to nail the portal and have injury luck to stay out of the bottom four.

  4. Coach Miles success worked against him. Year two was so special, he had set the bar high. Hoiberg kinda has the opposite thing going right now. Years 1-3 were such a train wreck, that 1 month of competent basketball has people believing.

  5. It's hard to be pissed. More just resigned to our fate this year. Guys played hard, but they just make critical mistakes or aren't able to keep up because of their ability. And our leaders, now that the support crew is gone, make way too many mistakes to get us over the hump. I'm always an optimist, but I don't see any more wins unless guys play way above their norm. There will hopefully be a game where SG and DW don't have turnovers, and we make free throws like MD did today (24-26) and we will win.

  6. The two-man game with Walker and Griesel has run its course against Big Ten teams. They’re forcing it and turning it over too much. We now have two players who are shooting the ball really well (Lawrence and Hoiberg) and another who is still a threat (Keisei). Let’s go back to running the offense and generating open perimeter shots. Hoiberg’s offense has always done that, we just usually have had a total of zero players who could consistently knock down those open looks. Lawrence and Keisei did not get enough touches today. It’ll open things up for Walker and Griesel more. We also need to stagger the rotation somehow to never insert CJ and Wilhelm into the game at the same time, as they usually do. It ruins any momentum that we had built.

  7. It's too bad Caitlin Clark has to flop, it really makes her unlikeable to watch. I think she's talented enough to earn what she deserves at all times. It's embarrassing some of the calls she gets. Oh well, that's Iowa's problem, I suppose...

  8. For me it comes down to, "Do you think FH can eventually build a winner here?" I think he has it in him. He's very intelligent, has a great basketball mind, has good coaches, and I think he found something this year with trying to change the culture. Hope he stays.

  9. Digging into some other things, I came across something I thought was interesting. When you look at the active coaching tenure at current schools, it's clear some conferences are going through rebuilds at the same time. It is also interesting to see what type of coach each conference has tended to go after (at least with their current staff). * number of seasons at their current school ACC continues to lead the way in terms of average coaching tenure Big Ten, Big 12, and Pac-12 are relatively on the same average tenure Big East and SEC have undergone many coaching changes as of late * This is based on the most recent job experience prior to taking the head coaching job at their current school (not total coaching experience) ACC and Big Ten have gone after recent/prior NBA head coaches Big East, Big Ten, and SEC have gone after recent/prior NBA assistant coaches ACC: Wide array of prior coaching experience Big 12: Largest proportion coming from prior Power 6 assistants Big East: Leaned much more heavily on prior Power 6 coaches Big Ten: Wide array of prior coaching experience; more heavily in prior Power 6 assistants Pac-12: Vast majority coming from prior Mid-Major coaching experience SEC: Focused more on prior Mid-Major coaching experience I find it interesting because Nebraska's recent coaches have come from an NBA head coach and Mid-Major head coaches. When looking at the Big Ten, 21% comes from recent NBA experience and Power 6 assistants. The Big 12 has a heavy focus on Power 6 assistants as well. Maybe it's because we don't have a stable program that's positioned for longevity and succession planning. But we haven't really spent much time talking about the talent pool of Power 6 assistants out there. Might be nothing. But something that stood out.

  11. Per suggestion from @AuroranHusker, here's a similar look for coaching tenure and hires for the Power 5 coaches. For simplicity, it's important to note that this is based on 2022 coaches. This was intentional due to upcoming conference realignments that may muddy up the results of hiring behaviors by conferences. It's also minor, but I included Notre Dame experience as "Power 5" and North Dakota State experience as "Mid-Major". Mid-Major is just a rollover from the college basketball analysis, which simply means "non-Power 5". * number of seasons at their current school (as of 2022) Big Ten far-and-above has the longest tenure of head coaches among the Power 5 conferences Pac-12 and ACC have the next longest tenure Big 12 and SEC with the shortest tenure across Power 5 conferences * This is based on the most recent job experience prior to taking the head coaching job at their current school (as of 2022) (not total coaching experience) Unlike college basketball, there are zero coaches hired with recent Mid-Major assistant experience (i.e., Utah State QB/OC) Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC hired coaches with prior NFL experience ACC: 87% of coaches come from Mid-Major Coaches and Power 5 Assistants Big 12: Consists only of Mid-Major Coaches and Power 5 Assistants (evenly split) Big Ten: 43% come from NFL Coaches/Assistants and Power 5 Coaches, next largest comes from Power 5 Assistants Pac-12: Similar to the Big Ten, 42% come from NFL Coaches/Assistants and Power 5 Coaches; and similar to Big 12, half come from Power 5 Assistants SEC: Fairly evenly split among NFL/Power 5 Coaches, Power 5 Assistants, and Mid-Major Coaches

  12. Man…. I’m not sure what else to say besides this has been an unmitigated disaster. I believe if FH was literally any other random coach we hired instead of him this board and husker nation would be completely up in arms. And he would have been fired maybe even at the end of last year.

  18. We have zero room for error. Unfortunately we made more than our share...hard to overcome. Our turnovers led to breakout baskets. The free-throw differential was unbelievable. Their defense concentrated successfully on shutting down Tominaga and Sam G. We fought for awhile. That was nice. Sam Hoiberg played well.

  19. I think Trev brings him back…..but it will take a minor miracle for Fred to get this program even on solid footing. Firing him at the very least restores some hope for the future. I don’t see much of a future under Hoiberg outside of continued losses.

  20. If anything, Sams play should be keeping us in games. The fact he’s playing the way he is and we’re still losing by 20 is… disappointing… to say the least

  21. Kudos to Sam. It honestly looks like we would have been much better off giving him CJ’s wasted minutes all year.

  22. Not sarcasm… but what in the last 4 years has given you this feeling? Like he hasn’t even been able to build a .500 winner…. There are teams with the same number of wins in 1 year that he had in his time here.

  23. I would also like to see this whole staff a whole year to get the ship righted. I think it could be done if they are all allowed to grow.

  24. I’m sorry but you’re wrong. The way they guard Kesei is way more aggressive because they know how’s our best shooter. Sam is playing great, but it’s not the same. And Sam is a better defender but not by much. They are already exposing his size on the other end

  25. Wilcher yes, but Keisi!? No way. He’s been our only life on offense all year!

  26. Sam H. shoots the threes when he’s open and when he’s not he shot fakes, one dribble and pulls up for an open 2. Makes all of them. CJ does the exact opposite of all of that. Give me the zero star walk on.

  27. Sorry, I would not spend the time or resources recruiting him a third time. Nope.

    IOWA GAME DAY THREAD

We settle for way too many 3's, 20-34 from 2 today but 9-30 from 3. Way too many possessions go by where we dont get paint touches. We are just gonna be a really inconsistent team because of the way we play.

  30. Agree defense is Iowa’s weakness. They just try to outscore you. Tournament tends to expose that problem. Have a off night and it’s game over. Outside of the second we did better than expected for me. We just can’t have those breakdowns if we expect to win.

  31. Me too, although I will readily admit I was excited by the Hoiberg hire and thought it was the obvious step forward for us as a program. Man how wrong I was though.

  32. No it’s me too. We won 22 then 19 games & suddenly that wasn’t “good enough.” Tim actually accomplished something Tubby Smith NEVER did, post a Winning B1G Conference record.

  33. At this specific moment in time, I think I'd like Fred to get another year. Ask me a different day and you may get a different answer. I don't really expect any improvement next season, nor do I expect him to turn it around in the long-term. Usually that combination would make me want to rip the band-aid off and move on. But there aren't a whole lot of coaching names jumping out at me as great mutual fits, and I can't imagine the current funding to hire a new coaching staff is what we want it to be. And with the way Trev has run his athletic departments (both at UNO and in Lincoln), I think he takes external circumstances into account. It's not just as simple as asking whether Fred is the right fit or not. In this case, I think Fred is the beneficiary of Trev looking around and seeing that it's not an ideal time to make the change and there are no slam dunk candidates waiting in the wings.

  34. He made some necessary changes and I will favor an additional year. Frank Solich was fired within one year of making some very necessary changes to his staff. Our AD at the time felt that if he hadn't made the change, we would slip into mediocrity. Lol. Not sure that is an apple to apple comparison; but with a couple well thought out player additions we could be moving the right direction with Fred at the helm. I am certainly not happily married to Fred...but we seem to have righted the ship.

  35. If this trend continues .... I'd put Leon Rice of Boise State on the list. He's won 20 games (going to count this year) 9 of the last 11 years and won 19 another. Only one losing season during that period. Boise is not a good basketball job, and he's made the most of it. P5 assistants are a crap shoot. For every Jerome Tang, there are dozens of flops. I'd also avoid a guy who gets hot this year and wins a game in the NCAA tournament. I would instead go with a head coach who has a record of sustained success, even if it's at a mid-major. I was really high on the Steve Pikiell hire because he had been a consistent winner at Stony Brook. Gregg Marshall did the same thing for years at Winthrop and was fabulous at Wichita until ... There might be other guys like Rice, but I just noticed they were doing well again this year and thought, "damn, that guy can coach."

  36. FTR, I don't agree with @Craytonhater's reasoning. But if you follow his reasoning to its logical conclusion, the only coach we had this century who left the program BETTER than he found it would have been Barry Collier. But I think Craytonhater is wrong. Tim Miles inherited a program that won 12 games the year before he arrived. And only 4 games in conference. In his 2nd season -- and I DON'T CARE IF IT WAS LIGHTENING IN A BOTTLE, IT WAS STILL AN NCAA TOURNEY APPEARANCE -- he lead us to the Dance. His last two seasons, we made the post-season both years. He turned the program over on a high note. He delivered the most conference wins in a single season in the history of the program his penultimate year here. Two consecutive post-season appearances before he was shown the door. Oh, but there wasn't much talent in the cupboard when Fred took over, so they say. Hey, friends, let's be honest, FRED BLEW THE CUPBOARD UP! He wasn't planning on keeping any of Miles' guys. He was going to fill his own cupboard with his own players and he liked Thor and Dachon Burke and had the room so he let them stay. It wouldn't have mattered who we might have had. If you recall the discussion at the time, it was noted he did the same thing when he took over from McDermott at ISU: he flipped the roster and basically started over from scratch. So, don't tell me about the shape of the roster at the time Fred took over as though it's some excuse for what's happened since. Matt A was hired to go out and fill a roster and that's what he did. It's not like Fred showed up in September and had to hit the floor with whoever was still there from the prior regime. Anyway ... if you agree with Craytonhater that he left the program in worse shape than when he arrived, fine, but I look forward to your compelling explanations.
