Did anyone catch Fred’s comments during the postgame interview with Shon Morris - he mentioned that going on the run that they did the last part of last season is what allowed them to target the level of guys in the portal, and then he said that certain guys wanted to transfer here to play with Keisei. Won’t show up on the stat sheet but it may have helped us land a guy like Mast

He also mentioned that guys saw the fun brand of ball we play as a reason they wanted to come.

Hmm, how's this list looking?  Any additions or subtractions?

I don't have a vote, but I'll say my 5 anyway. I might only have 4 correct, but I'd love to see all 5 correct for obvious "5th" reason, tbh. GBR!

Zach Edey -- POTY

Terrence Shannon Jr.

Boo Buie

Jahmir Young

Keisei Tominaga -- he gets a lot of respect league-wide, finish 3rd in the B1G as a team I think he's 'N'

Our “problem” is we are so balanced we may not get a guy.  People thought we would rely on Tominaga which hasn’t been the case.  Being the #20 scorer in the league when that is your main attribute as a player probably won’t cut it.  But he is a media darling and the face of potentially the #4 team in the BIG.  And a team that far exceeded their predicted finish.  So there’s a chance.

Meanwhile, Mast could make a run at bumping Reese or Omanyuri, even though when they play us they look like All Americans.  His scoring and rebounding are in the ballpark with those two, and he is much better at assists.  And, he is on a much better team, which often gets rewarded.  Except we are Nebraska, so I am not counting on it.

I think this is really true. It's kind of what I've been talking about when I talk about portal acquisitions and how potential recruits can watch our film and they can see themselves, what their role would be, and how they can contribute.

I'm not basing this on any inside info, I just figure we've got two new players locked in (and they have to be licking their chops watching us), we have one more spot currently available, but I figure there will probably be two more come open before the end of March.

And we will have our sights set on some of the top guys available. Grant Nelson would be a Husker if he was entering the portal this year instead of last.

Why would anyone leave before our Final 4 game? 😁

Does anyone have a grasp on our NIL situation though? I have heard conflicting info about it; everything from it's bottom third of P6, to it's very competitive except with a handful of bluebloods. I'd really like to know what the reality is. Do any of the big money boosters support basketball, or do they only care about football?

Except for a few bluebloods we are extremely competitive.

Ok, but how do you know this? Like I said...I've heard everything under the sun about where our NIL stands (for basketball specifically). I just don't know what to believe.

Robin Washut in the On3 chat today said he felt very good about our NIL operation

Big time Husker fan and donor said so. Hob nobs with the AD and those involved in 1890.

I asked him directly and he said we are very competitive with almost everyone except for a few big time money programs.

Also, said that we are smart by not just going after big names and are very responsive to needs communicated from the basketball program.

I wasn't one of the charter members of this board, but darned close.  Over these many years, I know the people who know, and the pretenders.  I've met with many of them.  What the long time posters say about inside workings, you can take it to the bank as true.  Whatever music videos I post, are great tunes! 🙂  Life is good!

I’ve heard the same. Competitive outside the upper tier, not sure how big that tier is, guessing top 20-30 teams. No hard fact to back that up though.

My impression was top 15-20.

Gary Sharp (Sharp & Handley sports radio Omaha) has repeatedly and recently said that NU Hoops NIL needs to improve.  I would imagine he has some inside info on this considering his position as a Nebraska sports media person.  Similarly, Tom Shatel stated before the season that NU's hoops NIL is nowhere near as good as Creighton's.  I would imagine he had a basis for this before putting it in print.

On an anecdotal note, every time we receive interest or have a visit from a bit time (5 star or high 4 star) recruit, I pretty much move on right away because I have never seen any evidence that we are competing in the NIL for these types of players.

This is not to say the NU hoops NIL is terrible, it probably is decent, but there has been little evidence that we are competing with the big boys in the hoops NIL department.  The hope is that this year's success--an NCAA tourney appearance, Fred's recognition as coach of the year thereby solidify him as a long-term coach--will help "boost" the donations to a point where we really can be competitive with the blue bloods.

Neither "Not so Sharp" Sharp nor "3 Sheets to the Wind" Shatel know what they are talking about...period.

If there is a player that is wanted by our coaches we have enough to be very competitive. We are also not going to get into a bidding war for a 5* player. There is a certain amount of financial responsibility that has to go into NIL.
