  2. Over the past four games or so, I have perused the other teams game threads on their boards. If there is one thing that is constant from one board to another (including ours), it's that every team believes that they are getting hosed by the referees, that the other team is getting all of the calls, etc. So we're not the only ones and I think part of it is just fans being fans. Every fan base thinks that a lot of calls that go against them are bad calls.

  5. All the recent speculation regarding an Achilles tear has caused me to remember my own relationship to the diagnosis. Two of my sons have had that problem in their forties caused by Pius alumni games, and I did witness the end of a pro football career after one (No, it wasn't Aaron Rogers). In the summer of 1967, the Chiefs played an exhibition game against the L.A. Rams. They were still smarting from their loss in Super Bowl I and had annihilated the Bears in their first exhibition. The Rams were led by their "Fearsome Foursome" defensive line of Merlin Olson, Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy, and Rosey Grier. It was a highly anticipated game and the bar around the corner at 39th and Rainbow called Jimmie's Jigger was even having a "Ram Roast" to celebrate. Just before halftime, Grier tore his Achilles, and never played another game. (The Chiefs won, by the way). Rosey didn't miss a beat and became a successful celebrity later. He was the person who disarmed Sirhan Sirhan after RFK's assassination. He then starred in many tv shows and movies as an actor. His highlight film was "The Thing with Two Heads", a 1972 stinker featured on Svengoolie last year. The other head was Ray Milland, if anyone is still interested. Stay warm, everyone.

  6. Watching the UCLA / Arizona game - and have to mention that Kelly Pfeiffer is also a bad ref in the Pac 10.

  7. Nice to get the win against what really is a quality veteran team. Huge shot by Keisei at the end when he finally broke free. Kind of ironic as I had said earlier how it was clear Collins had clearly told his team they could not let Keisei get loose as he was getting pushed and held all game away from the ball. The way he gets treated when he tries to make cuts would be charged as assault if it happened anywhere other than a basketball court. Not sure why Big 10 refs seem completely unable to see anything happening to players who do not have the ball.

  8. Sorry. After 50 years of watching Husker games, this isn't even close to honorable mention when it comes to poorly officiated games in Lincoln. Welcome to the club.

  9. Pike hitting the half court shot (3rd attempt) was an unexpected highlight. As was the young lady crawling across the floor for her money.

  11. Three thoughts: 1. Mast has more cuts and scrapes than any player I’ve ever seen. 2. Really would be nice to have more production at PG to break us out of funks. 3. Hoiberg once again showed he is an X’s and O’s savant.

  12. Nebraska Cornhuskers (13-5) vs Northwestern Wildcats (13-4) Date: Saturday Jan 20th, 2024 Time: 1:15 pm Arena: PBA Broadcast: BTN Northwestern Info Head Coach: Chris Collins Location: Evansville, IL Conference: B1G Nickname: Wildcats Mascot: Willie the Wildcat Last time out: Beat Maryland Point Spread: Nebraska by 1.5 Typical Rotation Depth: 7 KenPom rank: 59 Nota bene: It's alumni weekend and specifically Nebraska is honoring the 1993-94 Big Eight Tournament Champion team including a returning Danny Nee. Nebraska expects around 64 alumni of players and staff to be present dating from Lloyd Castner, a student manager for Jerry Bush from 1954-57, to Derrick Walker, class of 2023 Fred Hoiberg is 0-7 vs Northwestern at Nebraska and the Huskers haven't beaten the Wildcats since 2019 Northwestern ranks 337th in bench minutes as they have 4 starters who average over 30+ minutes per game Nebraska gutted out a 70-66 OT win vs Maryland during last season's alumni weekend game There is supposed to be a football player dunk contest around 12:45 today KenPom most used lineups PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 0 Boo Buie 6-2 180 Sr 3 Ty Berry 6-3 185 Sr 5 Ryan Langborg 6-4 195 Sr 13 Brooks Barnhizer 6-6 215 Jr 34 Matthew Nicholson 7-0 280 Sr 19.9 Player to watch: Boo Buie 5th year starting PG Boo Buie was one of the main catalyst behind Northwestern's surprising run to the NCAA tournament last season and continues to play at a high level, leading the 'Cats in scoring and assists. If Nebraska finds themselves in a close game at the end, NW will be at the advantage simply because they have arguably the best PG in the conference. Player to watch: Ty Berry Northwestern isn't quite the defensive team they rolled out last season with Chase Audige graduating but have increased their offensive output in part due to Berry finding his shooting stroke back. After a 38.3% 3pt success two years ago, Berry struggle last season, shooting 29.1% from 3. This season he's hitting a career high 43.3% from 3 and 52.7% from 2. Player to watch: Brooks Barnhizer Barnhizer is Northwestern's glue guy where his most important contribution is grabbing rebounds for a Northwestern team that is one of the worst in the conference at this statistic. Barnhizer will add some rim protection along with competent shooting ability. Player to watch: Ryan Langborg The Princeton transfer is another high level 3pt shooter for the Wildcats and is currently shooting 37.5% from 3. Others to watch Matthew Nicholson might be the most noticeable player on the court due to his unmissable stature. He's NW's best rim protector and he almost always makes the right plays. For the last few games 6'10" 255# Luke Hunger has been getting the start over Nicholson, presumably because he allows the 'Cats to play 5 out. Both centers tend to be foul prone. 6'7" forward Nick Martinelli averages 20 minutes of the bench where he brings rebounding and inside scoring. While it seemed that Gary might have endured yet another season ending injury in Piscataway, it turns out the diagnosis is a calf strain. While you never want to be without the services of your starting 4 man, this Northwestern team is one of the better conference opponents to face in that scenario. The Wildcats aren't a very good rebounding team, they play at one of the slower paces in the country, and they're unlikely to get the Huskers into a ton of foul trouble. Anything helps as the Huskers try to notch another conference win. As bad as Nebraska's defensive effort has been in conference play, it's Northwestern that ranks last in conference defensive efficiency. When you pair these numbers with how well both teams can shoot, any outcome is on the table today. For Nebraska the big key will be holding on to the ball as the Wildcats are a sneaky ball-hawking squad. This game also represents one of the rare games where a 'referee clown show' would benefit Nebraska as the Huskers have the bench depth advantage. Speaking of depth, how will Eli Rice and/or Matar Diap perform as the two players potentially in the rotation to fill in for Gary? FWIW freshmen tend to play better at home. While you like the chance of winning this game it's worth noting that Nebraska has never defeated a Northwestern team with Boo Buie. Prediction: Nebraska 76 - Northwestern 72 View full article

  13. Post game press conference - Josiah was asked about his reaction to Keisei's late three and he responded with "We're subbing offense to defense so I was right at the table, but who know what I could have done with that shot." Not serious but he's so natural he should look into media after his playing days are over.

  14. We took care of business at home. I love when I let the darkness take over and I pick the Huskers to lose and they don't. The win just feels better. You know... a little dirty, but better

  19. Not much of a make up call. On the other end, we don't even touch the player. On Brice's, they sandwich him.

  20. OK, I'm going to admit it. I've reffed games, although just junior high level. You can't see everything, and you learn to call games a certain way. For example, a defender reaching across to swat at a ball often will get called for a foul. The ref can't see if there's contact or not, but players aren't supposed to "reach" so they get called. Same thing with post defenders swatting down on the ball. They's supposed to be vertical. So it always get me when somebody says, "He got all ball!" Well, maybe he did and maybe he didn't, but that's the call. Same thing for "over the back," which often is somebody outjumping from behind against an opponent to didn't block out. If you don't block out, 9.9 times out of 10, you don't get the call. Dozens of other examples. The refs can't see everything, but they learn to call the game a certain way. Many are incompetent, but I've never known a ref who was "biased." However, I know plenty of fans who are.

  23. The ticket office told me Gate 4 was the one we could do the handicapped parking. It is what it is. If gate 4 is full, I'll drop mrs cip off at the front door, I'll park, then after the Husker ass whooping of Northwestern, I'll go get the vehicle, pick her up and let her drive home. She hates my driving. We'll go back home celebrating a Husker win!

Out for Northwestern and then day to day while he fully recovers. Dare I say, this is almost the best case scenario.

  28. A few thoughts: - Sweet win. Northwestern is a good team, so are we. - I won't slam the refereeing, yet it is simply amazing when there are bodies flying and major impacts and nothing is called. Then 20 seconds later a touch foul is called. Not sure I understand. Plus Collins can run the floor, literally, without even a warning. Really? - One negative, the careless turnovers. Nuf said about that. - We rebounded much better today. Much better. - Mast is simply getting beat up. Man he takes some blows. - Josiah was a man today. - Much better game out of JLaw today. Good job. - Wilcher was as mad as I have seen him today. Loved the fire. - Keisei showed up when we needed him. But he had a sneaky good overall game. Good job rebounding. Everyone who played contributed, including Eli who gave us several minutes of quality. - Good to see Blaise suited up.

  33. No one yells at the refs more than me. I think they lost control of the game. They let Rutgers get away with beating up on us. I think part of the reason fans (myself included) get upset is the vantage point for the fans. When we are in the stands or watching on TV, we see Keisei getting held nearly every time he comes off a screen. Something that might not be detected on the floor by the refs. I think they try to be great at their job (can't believe I just said that), but are human and can only see what they see.

  34. Yes he was and that is why he is/was suspended. My surprise is that he got the referenced "restraining order" which I assume prevents him from being suspended??? That shocks me.

  36. Lawrence was playing very well early on then got replaced by Hoiberg who was horrible most of the game. Should let him keep playing when he was going well. If we are going to get where we want it will include Lawrence. Hoiberg brought nothing until a couple threes in overtime to give us a punchers chance.

  37. We are firmly on the outside looking in right now. We've got to find a way to win these next two at home because I don't know how many we'll end up getting on the road. Losing Gary for an extended period of time might be a nail in the coffin type of scenario for this team. We're two 10+ point leads on the road ending in losses from 15-3 and projecting as a Top 7 seed. Unfortunate... but good teams win the close games. I honestly could see the train derailing a little bit here. We haven't faced multiple losses in a row this entire year and... as we just witnessed... don't deal with adversity very well.
