The more I think about this pickup the more I like it. May just be the koolaid, but here’s my thoughts: I wanted an experienced point guard. He checks that box. He has good size for the position…last I saw he was listed at 6’3”. Sam was freakishly big for a PG so I wasn’t expecting that, but in a perfect world I didn’t want a 5’9” guy either. He seemed plenty athletic when we played them so no worries there. The shooting numbers aren’t great, but it sounds like Fred is going to personally work with him. I will choose to believe that will make a difference. And he has 2 years to work with the young man. Seton Hall and NC State were kicking the tires so it’s not like we were scraping the bottom of the barrel here. I am actually pleased with this one given the other guys we missed on. Could have done a whole lot worse.

If you need to compare Ulis to Sallis, sorry but Sallis is the better player. Now, if you're talking playing a guy at the point, Ulis is a point whereas Sallis would be a guy you're trying to turn into a point. Ullis is a solid veteran get and a guy who's played in the B1G for 3 years on a team like Iowa where he was used to moving the ball around. Not sure if there is a very high ceiling but their is a high floor in being a plug-in 20+ minute a game guy at point, a position of need.

    23-24 Roster (updated)

Assuming Allick signs with us, I like the overall intangibles that this transfer class brings with them. Transfers often come with some baggage, expectations, and personal goals that don't show up in their stat lines. We've certainly seen that ourselves in years past while getting burned by guys that made the team worse despite being an individual talent. In contrast, last year's transfer additions were great culture guys. They were leaders. And it appears that this year's crop is built from that same mold. Williams: leading scorer that was willing to come off the bench rather than take the notoriety of being a starter. Our Manu Ginobili. Allick: By all accounts is one of the real good guys in the portal. Great family. Hard worker who has gotten every ounce of success possible out of the amount of talent he was given. Ulis: One of the few Iowa players in recent memory that was actually likeable. Plays with hustle and grit. Smart. Mast: Admittedly I didn't watch any Bradley games over the past few seasons. But the quotes he gave about his reasons for entering the portal, and his coach's comments about him, reflect positively on his character. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, particularly when the other additions all appear to have been made with their locker room impact in mind.

  12. For anyone who hadn't figured it out by now, the PG we were all talking about was Chucky. I can't tell you how I heard what I heard, but I can say it was more than just idle gossip or manufactured rumor. There was legitimate smoke to the rumors. But then Wisconsin made a run in the NIT and things must have changed, so that didn't pan out. But that's who probably a bunch of us were thinking would be our starting PG next year and we had good reason to think that way. And as I write this, there's still a name out there (not a PG) who could potentially be a difference maker and we still have a spot, so ... stay tuned.

  13. All kidding aside, just like last years roster at this time, we might have TOO many good players. PG - Lloyd/Ulis Wing - Tominaga/Williams/Lawrence Post - Mast Bench - Wilcher, Gary, WB, Rice, Hoiberg, Blaise Let’s see what these last two spots might hold, but it’s a deep, versatile squad with lots of interchangeable parts & guys who can actually SHOOT. I don’t see any reason why we can’t improve on that .500 record.

  14. Started 27 games and played in all 32 this past season. My coworker is a diehard Iowa fan and said he wouldn’t blow us away with any one thing, but that he was a very safe and steady point guard that wouldn’t hurt us either. Sounds like a nice solid pickup with big ten experience.

I’ll be honest….I was getting a bit a nervous we were going to get shut out at PG. At this stage of the game Uhlis is a pretty good get. Welcome to the team Ahron!

  18. This is going to sound sacrilegious, BUT ... Our final Kenpom ranking last year was #94; Bradley's was #90. So, two roughly equal teams in terms of quality. We lost Derrick to graduation, who was certainly ONE of our THREE best players last year. In his place, we got Bradley's BEST guy. He'll be different than Derrick. Some of the things he'll do won't be as good; some of them will be better. For instance, the new guy is a legit 3-point threat. Which might open the door for more Juwan Gary at the 4. Or maybe a fully healthy, rehabbed Wilhelm. Maybe he won't be quite as good as Derrick. But I'm not sure it's more than just a marginal backslide.

OK, so he's a MUCH better perimeter shooter than Sallis. He's not a volume guy, so that's good. Won't mess with our chemistry in terms of guys being uptight about who's going to get the shots. He's not quite as good at the stripe as Sallis, but he's certainly respectable. His assist:turnover ratio is much better. He started on an Iowa team that danced. He knows the Big Ten. Him vs. Sallis is a coinflip if you ask me. I'm comfortable with this.

  28. I think we have talked Amy's status here quite a bit. Was Tom asked to leave or did he want a change? Only they know. I too hope we get better play from the veterans and the incoming class plays like a veteran. Karl is correct that it will not get any easier going forward. You either step it up or you get left behind. Here's hoping we are moving on up.

  29. We went from HOPING Lloyd was ready for the B1G to signing a PG who’s PLAYED in the B1G. We don’t have to HOPE Blaise/Breidenbach can play the 4/5 now that we have Mast. Williams is an upgrade & Keisa/Hoiberg/Lawrence can ONLY be improved by virtue of playing time & experience. PLUS we still have two spots to fill & those players could easily be difference makers too. Not to mention the Veteran presence of Gary, Wilcher & the hidden gem of Ashland’s Casey Jacobsen.

I'm excited for all the Boehm hate. It was always good to have a specific person targeted out for every ounce of failure of Nebrasketball history. Even before he was born, or before he worked here, or after he worked here. You didn't know why, you just knew it was his fault.

I'm good with a solid role player joining the NU roster, I think Ahron Ulis can be our next Evan Taylor, who was 'found money' that I always believed was a great get while others thought he'd be a nothing burger. I guess we'll have to see what NU got this time around. GBR

  38. Now if we could just hear more from our WBB coach. Over due on either a press conference or segment on sports nightly. Some thing where questions can be asked. In my mind it would be nice at least for the fan base. She has been very appreciative of us. Just throw us some red meat.

  39. This isn't necessarily a starting lineup or rotation prediction. Just wanted to kind of compare the roles/rotation of our last 8 regular season games to what it could look like next year. During that stretch, we went 6-2 with three wins over NCAA tournament teams and 2 over NIT teams. Lead guard – Sam Griesel > Ahron Ulis Sam is going down as an all-time fan favorite and for good reason. He did have his flaws at the position. If he were Iowa’s starting pg last year, his numbers wouldn’t have been as impressive. Ulis fits better with Nebraska than he did with Iowa. He might actually be the only likeable player in Iowa basketball history. Guard – Keisei Tominaga < himself next year I don’t expect him to average 20 ppg like he did the last however many games. But I do think he can average 15-17 over the course of a season. And he will definitely have the same gravity and demand the same attention he did from defenses during his hot streak. Guard – Jamarques Lawrence < himself next year Huge fan of Lawrence. I think very highly of his game. He will again benefit from having a point guard who is pass first. I don’t think he would’ve fit well with Wrightsell. Wing – CJ Wilcher << Brice Williams Post – Derrick Walker > Rienk Mast Mast is solid, though. Bench: Backup guard – Sam Hoiberg < Ramel Lloyd I think. And if Ramel is good enough to earn a starting spot, that’d be great. He's undoubtedly a better player than Sam. Sam just kind of did everything correct on both ends of the court. That's important. The good news is, if there are talented guards in the rotation who aren't doing things the right way... we still have Sam. Wing forward – Denim Dawson << Juwan Gary Same exact player archetype. Juwan is just better in every aspect. Backup 5/occasional 4 – Wilhelm Breidenbach << Josiah Allick This would really be a big deal. Post depth – Blaise Keita/Oleg Kojenets < Blaise Keita/Wilhelm Breidenbach - More guard and wing depth with Hoiberg, CJ, Rice, Jacobson

  41. During the NU exhibition VB game yesterday against Wichita St. John Cook wore a mike during the second set and talked to the announcers about a variety of things. One of the questions one announcer asked him was how was Maggie readjusting to VB after playing WBB. He said she is doing great and that playing basketball has really helped her in volleyball. He says many of his great players in the past like Jordan Larson played both sports in High School. He said the transition from BB to VB is easier then vice versa. He said she came in great condition from all the running in BB so he is having his volleyball players do more running. By the way the VB game was fun to watch. He is building a great team. All five new freshmen play at a high level. They will be taking a 2 week trip to Brazil and play some top teams there. This all happens before the fall practice season starts. WVB portal reopens tomorrow for two weeks.

Seems to me like a numbers game for Ulis. Between Tony Perkins and Dasonte Bowen Iowa should be able to cover the point with freshman Brock Harding coming in as well. Last year Ulis was penciled in as the starter. Next season he's likely looking at a reduced role probably heard that in his after-season talks. It's safe to say Ulis underperformed last year. If there is a jump to be had out of Ulis I'd say probably losing his starting job, sitting in the transfer portal for 40 days, and getting an invite because Nebraska has been striking out for a month is ample motivation for him to find it. Even if there is no jump, he's a good fit for what this team needs positionally.
