  1. Seriously, my initial reaction is that the basketball gods would NOT let us have anything nice. If he would have come here, one of two things would have occurred. Either his medical condition would have triggered or he would have suffered some other type of injury. So goes the trend of Husker basketball.

  2. Friends, next year we are going to miss Sam’s driving to the hoop and laying it in patented move. I’ve enjoyed watching it the past several seasons.

  3. Man, that second half was brutal. * It appeared that our players assumed the win was banked, and they really didn't have to show up in the 2nd half. * Turnovers...my gawd what an awful display. Lack of focus, carelessness and perception. Film review today would be embarrassing if I was one of the players. * Our players do not react well to physicality. * She gutted it out; but Alexis appeared a bit under the weather. * I applaud MSU for not quitting and clawing their way back. * Their press wasn't that great; but our reaction to it was unbelievably bad. Despite all of the above...we won. An important win at that.

  4. Sloppy play let’s MSU back in the game.Markowski isn’t supposed to inbound the ball against the press. If we don’t handle the ball better and treasure possession of the ball we may be in a scrap to the end. Jaz does some magical passes but she made two horrific passes that cost us baskets.

  5. So we’re just going to blame us for Fred’s dismal results here? It’s all on Nebraska? Fred has no responsibility for a bad plan upon taking the job, hiring a substandard staff, for not leveraging his ISU success and NBA experience in recruiting, whiffing on the best collection of in-state talent in decades, having a complete lack of discipline and accountability for 3 years, and in hiring and then staying with Abdelmassih for 3 years? Okay. Our bad.

  6. Well, that was certainly...interesting. In the heat of the moment, I was completely disgusted with the second half collapse, but after some thought, I had to accept that Nebraska is a middling B1G team that, as longtimefan rightly states, doesn't play smart. Nebraska and MSU are, as their records going into the game indicate, basically the same. So, what might have been expected as a close, back-and-forth game, just unfolded in a completely different manner (each team having a dominant half) to get to the same point, a close ending. As many have stated, the turnovers are simply inexplicable and unacceptable at this level. Lazy passes, not moving to receive the ball, 25-foot passes through 3 or 4 defenders, hotdog behind-the-back passes to blow an easy scoring opportunity, etc. Seemed like the last couple of years the team had gotten away from these ridiculous tendencies that have haunted them for years, but now they are back in full force. Something hasn't seemed right with Shelley for several games. She obviously does a lot of positive things but, my goodness, she also makes some of the most boneheaded, 6th-grade-level decisions to offset whatever the positives were. She seems to be locked in for a couple of minutes and then completely disinterested for the next couple of minutes. Officially credited with 6 turnovers (sure seemed like more) and could have easily been 12-15 with the horrible passes she made. I think Williams is a decent coach but don't see Nebraska ever being a top team in the conference unless some exceptional/transformational talent falls into her lap. They'll be competitive and pull an upset here or there but never get over the proverbial hump. There's a body of work now that indicates a middle-of-the-pack team that can't seem to achieve any consistent, sustained player development.

  7. Her going to Iowa would be a nightmare of epic proportion! Their history of beating/taunting the Huskers with talented point guards already stretches to six or seven consecutive years of Kathleen Doyle (once a Husker recruit!) and now Clark. Yes, geography plays in our favor, but not ours alone. Creighton is even closer to home and BP's abilities might be more compatible with CU's style than with AW's. I think I reported here a few months ago that at a VB game, I sat in the first row of west side B section. Just below me sat several Husker women BB players when up the aisle came Britt Prince. The players made room for her and the greeted each other as though they were all good friends who had already made plans to sit together. I took it as a hopeful sign lFingers crossed here!

  10. I am old school but there has to be some accountability for player decisions. I would have benched Jaz for the hot dog behind the back pass. She needs to know that’s not acceptable and one should never try to show up your opponent. I love her play but everyone needs to be accountable. Amy post game laments the turnovers. Then something must be addressed in practice. And please, get some baseline inbounds plays where the ball can be inbounded and not lead to turnovers. Sam Mckewon wrote today that NU needs to win 5 of the remaining 7 to make the NCAA. Two with NW, 2 with Illinois, Minnesota, at Michigan and at Iowa. I don’t see 5 wins there.

  11. If Fred couldn't easily duplicate Forbes' records in the low mid-majors, then what the hell are we paying him $3 million+ a year for? Hoiberg did more at Iowa State than Forbes did at East Tennessee, this is an easily verifiable fact. I have no doubt that Fred could comfortably handle the SoCon. He coached a team in the NBA to the playoffs, something that I doubt Forbes will ever have the chance to try. Just because Fred chose to commit career seppuku by coming to coach at Nebraska doesn't mean he hasn't achieved way more in less time than Forbes has, and it certainly doesn't mean that Forbes should be anxious to make the same career move.

  14. Really nice 2nd qtr. Got into a better flow as game went on. Were attacking the basket well, then got the 3's to fall...shooting average overall is very good. Our rebounding is going well too. Markowski may have close to 10 already. And defensively we're holding them down. Issie had a great fist half. Playing as well as she ever has. Sam is back

  15. I think quite a few fans knew she was acting except the ref who bought it hook, line, and sinker, or called it knowing it was an act. Either way, he needs to be done as an official. I agree with most what has been said. I believe Jaz is done after the season. She has not had her head in the game. With what looks like 3 done (Sam, Issie, and Jaz) and maybe more( medically retired, transfers ?) Williams and staff have much work to do. I am at a point where I am not sure she is up to the task. Would say last year Williams took a few steps forward, now think she may have lost more than she took. As has been pointed out we have enough to go on and at this point she is a slightly better that .500 coach at NE.

  17. Player development covers a big area. I would like to focus on the mental part of the game. Many of our on going short comings stem from a weakness there from time to time on decision making. A couple of mental break downs can cost us in a close game like last night. I could give many examples but for the sake of brevity I will give two examples. With a 6 point lead and 22 seconds left (after a Mich St time out) Haggeman drove to the bucket on Bourne who fouled her. 3 pt play. With no foul and a made basket it would have still been a 4 pt lead and our ball and they would have had to foul us. Big mental mistake. The foul which was correctly called was on a 4th year senior. We then missed two free throws and they drove the hoop again and we fouled with them and they made one but got the rebound and Haggeman took a long 3 which missed but was fouled by Haiby. Made all 3 free throws. It may have been an iffy call but you don't put yourself in that position for the ref to possibly call it. The mental mistake was made by a 5th year player. We can blame mental mistakes on poor execution but I will put a lot of it on the coaches when we have so many of them and they are recurring over the years. Poor percentage passes, bad inbounds plays, bad fouling etc. We have too much talent for this to happen as much as it does.

  18. Is it just me, or do others think we roll out the same game plan, game after game after game? I like our players. They are a talented bunch. I think they are executing what they practice. I think they do as told. Inconsistent results must be frustrating for them too. I am not too upset with the W/L record. We have some nice wins. Yet, after games (or even seasons), I find myself discouraged as often as encouraged. Conflicted for sure.

  20. As @basketballjones mentioned…wins. Forbes is gonna win more games in the past 2 seasons at Wake than Fred will in 4 seasons here. This many 20 loss seasons in a row would make any CBB fans long for wins.

  21. Wake Forest is #72 in Kenpom, which is in the ballpark of where we were before we lost 40% of our starting lineup to season-ending injuries. Why would this guy be considered an improvement over what we have? Because his players don't get hurt?

  22. We should be glad to get out of this with a win. I am frustrated with the continuing sloppy play. Jaz’s Hot dog behind the back pass that cost us a sure bucket nearly came back to haunt us.

How about this, we tell Britt if she signs with the Huskers, we’ll take her mom and sign her to be the new WBB HC! Actually, I’m only half joking - I bet that after 7 seasons, Ann Prince would have this program in a better place than it currently is having had Amy Williams at the helm for 7 years.

  30. Fred definitely deserves credit for what he did at ISU. I have a hard time chalking up his Husker tenure as ‘Nebrasketball gonna Nebrasketball’. His resume is a full picture, he had a hell of a 4 year run at ISU, and he’s had what may be the worst 4 year stretch any P5 coach has ever had at Nebraska.
    1 point
  31. IMO, we need to go after a mid-major coach that's willing to accept a new challenge and build his own program. I don't think any established P6 coaches are toughing this job.

  32. Forbes is basically Craig Smith who had the unfortune of working for Bruce Pearl. Find it hard to believe he's in the market to leave Wake after getting extended last year but find it harder to believe that people don't think he could win here or , lol, that Fred Hoiberg could have done what he did at all those stops.

  33. My guess is we'll move the Gavitt Games to the B1G/ACC slots later in the non-con season.

  34. But the question remains...why would Forbes want to leave Wake Forest for Nebraska? Wichita State I could *maybe* see since he previously coached there (although maybe Shocker fans still want to distance themselves from the Gregg Marshall era?) but Nebraska? Wake Forest is a million times better basketball school than Nebraska and it lies in the middle of one of the richest hoops recruiting areas in the country. I can't see him wanting to leave that for what would be at best a lateral move. If he is anywhere near as awesome a coach as some make him out to be, Nebraska ain't the move. One would think he could hold out for any number of better jobs that are bound to open up in the next year or two. Syracuse, for example, will be coming up soon one would think. Georgetown too. Louisville will most likely be available this year...

  35. Norm, Steve Forbes is a ridiculously good basketball coach and would instantly do everything that I feel you love about basketball coaches. I’m surprised you’re so dismissive about him. Forbes would immediately bring a real, true toughness edge we haven’t seen around here in a long time. He’d value dawgs over hype. Hoiberg has to pivot to valuing these things. Forbes lives by those things. He’d be a home run hire. I know you loved Miles - IMO, Forbes brings anything and everything Miles did… but with just a little more… I’m not sure what the word is… “gravitas” (?) to the toughness/dawg mentality persona.

    Britt Prince

Just resurrecting this thread to ask if anyone has heard any encouraging tidbits or has any inside info on NU’s chances of signing Britt Prince. One would think with her mom being her head coach, the prospect of Britt playing her college games in Lincoln less than an hour away from home where her family could attend multiple games every season would be an attractive situation, right? Britt is the type of player who would not only have a legendary basketball career at NU, but could also elevate the status of the entire NU WBB program on the national level. A transformative player, basically. Last Fall, I was emailing one of the reporters from the Journal Star about Britt and her future plans. I told him that Britt will basically have her pick of programs nationwide to go play for. I get that. And if we lose her to a UCONN or a Notre Dame or a Stanford, then fine, I can live with that. More power to her. But friends, if Britt signs with Iowa and goes to play for Lisa Bluder, I will literally vomit. And, I’m sorry, but I would also lose respect for Coach Amy as a recruiter that I don’t think could ever be fully restored. (I’m still sore about Coach Amy losing Taylor McCabe to Iowa)

  41. I agree with Cazzie; A little sloppy with the ball. We're going to have to develop/vary our attack on the basket; too many passes into the post where there are three defenders to intercept the ball, or disrupt the shot (We've seen better teams completely disrupt our offense; nor are we getting any fouls called for FTs or 'and ones'). How about some 'cutters' or backside to the rim for buckets. We need to vary our offense especially in the paint. Treys are Great, when they're falling; But when they're not falling right

  42. I guess we are just going to be sloppy with the basketball. Passing into the post cost us three turnovers early. Bourne is scoring early and we take her out of the game. Sigh. Defense is playing fairly well.

Was really hoping we could keep the Aussie string going. This is a good indicator Issie and Jazz are sending home good reports about UNL and their experience here. Jessica is the type of player we need. International experience on National teams. She won't be like a freshman with glassy eyes on her face. Need to see more of her floor game.
