  4. Is there any sort of qualitative difference between whining and expressing grave concern? I've pointed out several times that leaving a scholarship open for two years is like a self-imposed probation with scholarship reduction. If we do it again, how many spots will we be leaving open? Is there any point in time at which it's OK to express concerns or reservations about something Miles is doing?

  5. If this kid doesn't pick NU, I will follow his career closely, follow him on twitter, and rub it in if he transfers in the next 2 years. Especially if Nebraska does well in the meantime. #rathereatsourgrapesthancrow

  7. 2 yrs ago Kentucky had a team of five stars and din't make the tourney. Cant read a lot into a single yrs results. Number one sales pitch for top tier kids? "I'll getcha into the NBA." Til Miles gets a guy there it gonna be hard to get top tier guys. Norm one other thing guys be looking for is immediate PT. With Nebraska returning everybody but one guy, recruits be thinkin how am I gonna see da court? Good points. However, the UNLV coach seems to have lost the locker room, instead of just had-some-bad-breaks, as evidenced by the post-season transfers of highly ranked players--players that he recruited to UNLV. Also, his cleaning house of other players that he recruited to make room for new ones is interesting in both the extent and overt nature of what is happening. And the creation of an expectation of a new recruit starting from day one is something foreign to those of us who grew up watching the likes of Tom Osborne. It appears that Jordan Cornish is buying whatever UNLV is selling. My guess is that his parents are having graves doubts about UNLV, are having some serious "beware" discussions with Jordan, but are not going to over-rule his wishes and are already looking ahead at future transfer options (at least, that's what I'd be doing). It will be interesting to see how the UNLV coach fares over the next several years. I've never thought you could treat a team of people this way and be successful over the long haul . . . but I'm often wrong. By the way, Red Sea Scrolls has an interesting item on Jordan Cornish in today's Tunnel Talk.

  8. In Doc's situation, he was signing guys in November who were marginal/didn't work out. I agree you don't just take a 4-year player just to add a body. Not even a two-year player. But you cannot tell me that there were no 2-year players when Miles arrived who couldn't have helped us at least as much as Vooch, Menke and Peltz did in the first two years under Miles. We've basically had two scholarships languishing virtually unused during that time: one for Vooch and another for a walk-on. I guess Vooch is an example of a kid we took a reach on in order to fill a spot, so that kind of argues against what I was just saying before about leaving them empty. Hmmm. Now I'm not sure how I feel. It's Friday afternoon. Maybe it's time to start drinkin' and just forget about empty scholarships.

  9. I have no problem leaving these spots open for the class of 2015 if we can't fill them. I'd rather have extra room available for next year as opposed to just signing anyone to fill them. That is what got us in trouble under Doc. He seemed to just sign anyone who would come here instead of being selective and only signing players that will be a fit and/or were more talented. There are not a lot of top notch players left for 2014. It's not like Coach Miles hasn't tried but if we miss out on Cornish (which is looks like we will), then it wouldn't be a bad idea to hold spot instead of wasting scholarship on a project.

  10. You can leave spots open for a year, maybe two, when you're an Arizona that does it but not Nebraska. If they go without another commit they will have 2 spots open this year and 1 each of the previous two seasons. A school thats never won a NCAA game doesnt have the same luxury some of the bigger schools that leave them open do that have 2-5 McDonalds AA players and multiple other 4 star talent. I can see maybe one this year but not two, thats just putting you at a disadvantage to build the program.

  12. Tim Miles & Co. have, over each of the past two seasons, left one scholarship open and used it for a walk-on, and it appears that such actions each year were deliberate. Accordingly, we might need to learn from time-to-time to live with such an approach in the future as well, whether we like it or agree with it or not. So why did Peltz only get in the spring this past season and not the fall if they intentionally left it open and used it for a walk-on?

    OT: Food

I have two Boston butts sitting in the smoker right now smoking away which will become pulled pork for my son in law and sons graduation party. They are graduating from Hastings College tomorrow. I have done the taste test and they meet my approval. The butts have been smoked with Hickory and marinated 24 hours with Fat Boy pork rub and a little brown sugar. The Fat Boy rub is made in Grafton Nebraska which is between Sutton and Fairmont. Served with the pulled pork will be southern style coleslaw, a homemade Eastern Carolina vinegar based BBQ Sauce, porked beans, and a variety of chips. The coleslaw will end up on top of my pulled pork. We will also have BEER and other types of BBQ sauces for those people who don't want to walk on the wild side.

But he's scheduling a visit for LSU and LSU has "bag men." (By the way, every time I type "bag men" I envision guys with balls so big they have to waddle.)

Expressing grave concerns come people we know and like. Duh!

  17. And, btw, there are still more transfers coming. Petteway didn't announce he was transferring until June (or at least he didn't announce where he was going to sign until then...). It's very possible this gets dragged out over the summer. There's no deadline for when these decisions have be made. If it doesn't happen now or over the next couple of weeks, all is not lost.

  18. I agree with the idea of filling all your scholarships up with players that fit your needs, but to just put a guy on your team to fill a spot is not always a good thing. Most of your one year transfers expect to play. If they just sit the bench and fill a roster spot they will potentially bring a bad attitude to the team causing chemistry issues. If you give a scholarship to a walk-on at least it is a reward for effort and hard work. Best case scenario is to fill all 13 spots with kids that fit your needs, but it is not always that easy.

I can see maybe one this year but not two, thats just putting you at a disadvantage to build the program. ...unless you fill those spots with dead weight... You can't just fill the spot for the sake of filling it. Plenty of one year bums or Juco players that were available we could have filled for those unused slots and still be in the same position today. The point is if you keep doing it you're not using all the assets available to you. You're already a program behind the 8 ball, why line yourself up better to get taken out? I'm sure its because they want the very best and if they dont get them they hold on but when it happens 3 years in a row thats a problem. It means you need to fix something right now. The definition of insanity fits into play here, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

  20. Makes me wonder. I mean, we jumped in on Cornish because he became available. The coaches knew Hawkins and Vooch were on the way out about mid season, yet we haven't heard about an abundance of recruits we are after that can join the squad for the 2014-2015 season. The coaches must feel good about where we are sitting with some 2015 guys and we'll just wait in the meantime to see if any more transfers become available. I expect a lot of whining when we don't fill out the roster again, which to a degree is okay.

  23. For those of us that do not feed the Rival's pony...can you mention what is of interest? Interviewed a UNLV analysts. UNLV guys said UNLV is in great shape to land Cornish. Said the coaches there are really good at letting the players only see what they want them to see and they close very well once they get a recruit on campus to visit. UNLV guy admitted that if Cornish takes a step back to look at UNLV roster turnover and their perimeter depth that Cornish should logically favor NU and what is offered there. Facilities, coaches, atmosphere, academics, and opportunity to contribute immediately on a B1G team legitimately in the hunt for a B1G title. But, in the end UNLV guy predicts Cornish ends up there. Then Robin examines everything, talks about how much the Cornish family loved it here etc etc etc. but in the end Robin predicts he ends up at UNLV as well.

  24. For those of us that do not feed the Rival's pony...can you mention what is of interest? Nothing new really. Robin had some quotes from the LV Sun beat writer, who shared his opinion of UNLV recruiting and gave his prediction that Cornish will commit to them. Robin said that prior to Jordan's visit to Lincoln, the staff didn't feel that great about landing him, but he had a great visit, and his family loved the atmosphere in Lincoln and especially loved what UNL offers in terms of the emphasis on academics. Nebraska let him know that he has a great chance to play substantially very early. Robin closed by saying he doesn't have a good feeling about Cornish and that he feels he'll pick UNLV. Both the beat writer and Robin talked about how coach Rice has had 7 players transfer over the past three years, but that may not matter much in Jordan's decision. They also mentioned the close friend who's going there (R. Vaughn). It's not looking good, to say the least. I still believe this is a done deal unless mom intervenes.

Why do I think this is a stupid practicle joke that went bad...because: - they did this in broad daylight - they did not try to hide anything - they are typically good kids (per people I know who knew these kids in HS) - they did this in broad daylight. As Sip stated, we need to find out the full story before we pass judgement...but lordy, this seems to be a pretty stupid move.

    2015 Recruits

I see she's on the top 100 list of ProspectNation at the post position. She was on the All Central Texas top 5 team last year as a Jr. Would be a nice recruit to man the paint, get rebounds and block shots. Pretty athletic from what I've read.

I've gotten a lot of down arrows since we moved to this site but none more mystifying than the one on the above-quoted post. I mean, really? OK. Not sure why that would draw any ire, but OK. Maybe it was fat fingers on the ipad. Because otherwise, a person with an account who has never taken the time to post a single post on this site took the time to register a down arrow for "Amen, Walter. Er, Jimmy." I apologize for how inflammatory that must have come across to ... someone, apparently.
