I think KT is still working on adjusting to a role that is different than last year.  What we need from him this year is completely different and he doesn’t have to carry the load.  He can easily average 12-15 PPG without forcing anything.  His best shots have been on ball reversals and when he works to get open.

I think our offense works well because of what KT did last year, he’s now the primary focus of the opposing team so it’s opened up the court for the others. I still think he’s our best overall scoring threat when he’s in the game. Last night showed me he can dish it back to a physical team that was doing everything they could to knock off his spots.

Agreed, plus with that attention going there our other guys are getting to flow and cook and KT still had kind of a quiet 23.  That’s a good thing.

It did not feel like 23 at all, and then I look up and he has 23. Did not feel like a typical keisei explosion

Probably because so many of those 23 were free throws.

Considering Tominaga hadn't made a FT in his prior games, that he gained 9 extra points from the line last night felt huge in the moment. Keisei is NU's #1 threat, and everybody knows it. That helps Brice & Juwan a lot !!

They said it's because he was out of the coaching box.  After all the jawing at the ref, all they needed was an excuse to pull the trigger and I think that was it.

I thought it was against the Duquesne coach for his constant chirping at the refs after #1 fouled out.

The coach was trying HARD to get T'd up.

 

He was out of the coaching box and the ref was ignoring him. His assistants were trying to pull him back and he resisted them and kept jawing at the official.

 

Eventually, the official was like "OK, you want a T, I'll give you a T."

Haven't seen an opposing coach try that hard to get a T against us since Wyoming coach Benny Dees in 1989.  Towards the end of the game they were losing badly to us, he was doing everything he could do to get tossed, and the refs weren't having it.  So the pep band (who were situated right next to the visitors bench - the last year that was allowed, btw) were yelling over to Dees saying "hey coach, give 'em one of these" with our hands around our neck.  He smiled at us as if to say "watch this", and turned towards the ref and gave him the choke sign and got immediately tossed.

As he walked past the band towards the visitor's locker room at Devaney he gave us all a high five and disappeared into the tunnel.  I will never forget that day, it's one of my all time favorite Husker hoops memories!

Lack of rebounding in 1st half was main reason it was close. Dominated rebounding during run to blow things open and then Duqe made run by getting to the glass. Probably putting jinx on team but with so many guys in rotation that can score can't think there will be many nights when all of them have off night shooting. Also helps when shooting that good at free throw line. Would be interesting to know how many hit nothing but bottom of the net. 

Seems like team is very cohesive and gets along. When Gary left the game Allick stood up and waved his arms to get crowd to stand and acknowledge his performance.

My favorite part of Wednesday was that FH was locked in and pissed about stuff. He lit into the guys once, sat KT for quite a while, and knew he had to be on refs all game. All that and he kept the team together.

Interesting matchup tonight-- The Dukes played UC Irvine.

 

Torvak has UC Irvine at #71 while the Dukes are sitting at 58.  What throws an even more interesting wrench in it is that the Fighting Tim Miles are the only team to beat UC Irvine this year in the very first game of the year for both teams.

 

Since that loss to SJSU, UC Irvine has been on a tear wheeling off six straight and beating USC in the process.

 

The Dukes got the best of UC Irvine tonight 66-62 and improve to 5-2.  Irvine drops to 6-2 with losses to the Dukes and SJSU.

The game also shifted once Duquesne got into serious foul trouble and eventually fouling out.

 

Would be remiss to say we won this game purely on our own. Duquesne seems to have a solid team that can have a strong season if they maintain some more discipline through 40 full minutes.

 

I'll likely keep my eye on them a couple times throughout the season.

 

Resurrecting an old thread here. But hear me out.

 

This was a very tough early season battle for us. We could have easily dropped this one. Duquesne came in real strong and likely could have made some noise if their team wasn't fouling out.

 

Skip to today, Duquesne is leading 38-23 in their A10 championship game. We played a solid team early in nonconference play and we've continued to get better and better since then.
