That was my thoughts exactly, tbh.

Get a ton of minutes, show your talents as a ball handler/slasher and defender, improve on your shooting, and all while playing alongside the MVC POTY. And he already knows the Devries family well. Would have to swallow your pride on NIL though, which is why it won't happen.

He made a poor decision and I felt he made a poor decision when he committed.

This isn't difficult... he's not a shooter, aka, not a combo guard. And he's not big enough to be a 1-4/5 switching defender so you can afford to have him on the court even without the shooting (ala Juwan Gary).

His best move, imo, is to go to a true mid-major and under the assumption he gets to be "Ja Morant," if you will.

There are a whole lot of combo guards, and plenty of just "shooting guards", in high major college basketball who aren't shooters (which is unfortunate to watch as a fan). Just for a Nebraska example, Bandoumel was a poor shooter throughout his college career and played shooting guard at SMU and combo guard at Nebraska. He also wasn't big enough to guard 1-4/5.

From what I saw from Sallis this year, he is absolutely a high major player (and I thought he was over-ranked out of high school). His numbers at Gonzaga don't worry me at all. They were better than the numbers Petteway, Palmer and White put up at their previous schools. If you watched Gonzaga, you could see he's a very good player. Intelligent, coachable, doesn't turn the ball over, converts inside the arc, good free throw shooter and tenacious defender. These are the types of players Nebraska needs to be successful. We aren't going to get the most sought after players to come here. And when we do, they don't really help us in the win column.

And we were far better offensively once Bando was off the court. Just saying...

I've never said I don't want him at Nebraska - minutes ago I posted that having him at the point being flanked by Lawrence and KT could be awesome. He slashes, they shoot.

But it's almost impossible in today's game to play a traditional point guard, ala Chucky, and a non-shooting guard also. It's why we didn't work well offensively with Griesel and Bando on the court.

You are a 100% correct.  I’d gladly take him as well but he’s gotta be willing to play primarily point.  Hoibergs offense doesn’t work with a 2 or a 3 that can’t shoot.  Hell Atleast with wilcher the scouting report probably says he can shoot it so teams have to guard him.

He’s probably the best possible reasonable addition we can make through the portal even, but that’s only if he’s willing and able to be a starting PG for us. Doesn’t make sense at other positions IMO

That's an interesting perspective as I'd think that Sallis as a low volume offensive player would work well with someone like Chucky who is higher volume than either Griesel or Bando ever were.  If you were to have guys like Chucky and Keisei taking up a bunch of outside shots I'd think that Sallis would fit in there pretty well given he excels more at the mid-range stuff and obviously is a defensive plus.

I wish we had an answer on KT, because we're in between a rock and a hard place having that up in the air. But a Lawrence, Chucky, and Hunter backcourt sounds pretty athletic and versatile.

Nebraska, with KT and Lawrence flanking him, would actually be pretty great for him. Open up driving lanes for him.

Exactly this! Sallis could come in and play the Sammy G role, except with elite, NBA-level athleticism and defense. It could be a lethal combination.

Sallis is intriguing but that's it. I watched his 22-23 highlights, lots of potential. He looks and moves like an NBA player, but that doesn't change the fact he's an unproven commodity. High major coaches are probably wary of his inability to impact the game consistently in the WCC. There were multiple Gonzaga fans in the comments of his transfer thread on Reddit, to paraphrase: 'can't dribble or shoot and has a poor feel for the game'. While in the same breath complimenting his defense.

I think CU would offer him a starting spot if Trey Alexander moved on. He has so much potential, maybe it really is a matter of him just not seeing the court enough. But he's had lots of practice time the past couple years with not much of it translating to results.

Everything you just said is why I felt going to Gonzaga was a terrible decision for him from the jump.

Gonzaga has been ready to win National Championships, along with having a super deep/old roster, for like 3 or 4 years now. The holes I saw in Hunter's game were not going to get fixed by being a practice dummy and a defensive bench contributor.

Gary Sharp talked about how Hunter's mom was really impressed with Hoiberg, it was just too far down the road by the time he was hired. I don't get the impression the relationship with NU is bad.

It’s not, but Tommy Lloyd is the one of the primary reasons Hunter chose Gonzaga in the initial process.

The family likes Fred a good deal.

Yeah, I'd be shocked if he hasn't committed to Arizona by the end of the week.

I don't know.

Arizona's roster is at least as good as the Zags. If he couldn't find a suitable role at Gonzaga, why would he go to Arizona? And why would they want him for anything other than to come off the bench? His production for 2 years was underwhelming. Plus, what's the Arizona coach's pitch? "My buddy Mark Few doesn't evaluate talent right, but I can see that you're a star waiting to happen."

My advice to him would be to go to a  lower-level program where he's certain he can play. I have a suggestion, but then it might seem like I'm biased.

Could it be as simple as Sallis wanting to play under Lloyd again? Maybe Lloyd was the one who envisioned the bigger role for him at Zaga? Just spit ballin

Doesn't mention where the Sallis visit is to take place (in-home?) but I don't know how well this works with Brice Williams coming in for an OV this week-end.

(Guess it must be Williams is here now (Fri, 4/7) through maybe Saturday.)
