Game Day Essentials: Game #2 vs Florida A&M

Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-0) vs Florida A&M Rattlers (0-1) Date: Thursday Nov 9, 2023 Time: 7:00 pm Arena: PBA Broadcast: BTN+ Florida A&M Head Coach: Robert McCullum (7th year) Location: Tallahassee, Florida Conference: SWAC Nickname: Rattlers Mascot: Venom the Rattlesnake Last time out: Lost to Creighton 105-54 Shirts/shoes not to wear: Green, Orange, Rattlesnake Boots Opening Line: Nebraska by 25.5 Nota bene: Nebraska is 2-0 all time vs the Rattlers, having faced them in 1993 and 2009. The teams were supposed to play Dec 6, 2020 but the game was cancelled due to Covid-19. Famous alumni include Andre Dawson and Bob Hayes After playing two Nebraska teams, FAMU will play Iowa and Iowa St in mid-December Player to watch: K'Jei Parker On a team that is mostly Juniors and Seniors, true freshman Parker played a team high 37 minutes, scoring 12 points on 16 shots, including 14 mid-range jumpers! Parker is supposed to be splitting time with all-name teammate Love Bettis, but Bettis didn't play in the first game. Player to watch: Keith Lamar 6'6" Stenson transfer led the team with 16 points as one of the few Rattlers that could get to the rim and finish. Others to watch Shanon Grant - The 6'10" 285 transfer center from Mercer will give the Nebraska frontcourt literally and metaphorically a bigger test than anything that Lindenwood had to offer though 0! rebounds in 20 minutes of play Roderick Coffee - Odds on favorite for a student led "WE WANT COFFEE" chant at the end of this one. Chase Barrs and Ja'Derryus Eatmon also in the conversation UNL Game Notes Roster/infirmary report CONFIRMED OUT 5 Ahron Ulis 6-3 190 lbs Junior - Waiting to hear from NCAA re gambling 15 Blaise Keita 6-11 257 lbs Junior - Ongoing ankle injury recovery 4 Juwan Gary 6-6 221 lbs Junior - Violation of team rules GAME TIME DECISION 30 Keisei Tominaga 6-2 179 lbs Senior Possible starters for Nebraska 10 Jamarques Lawrence 6-3 183 lbs Sophomore 0 C.J. The Huskers look to build on that start against a Florida A&M team that looked every bit like a team picked to finish 11th in the SWAC on Tuesday. The Rattlers have assembled a team with length at most positions that might give the Nebraska offense more of a challenge than Lindenwood but will likely struggle to score in this one. Nebraska will win, it's just a matter of by how much. It remains to be seen how aggressively Nebraska will pursue the 3pt shot this season. They took a ton of them vs Lindenwood but that's a squad that tends to pack the paint. The Rattlers historically try to run you off the 3pt line but Creighton was easily able to find shots from deep on Tuesday. Seems like you'll continue to see more 3s from the Huskers simply because that's the type of players they currently roster. Guys like Derrick Walker, Denim Dawson and even Sam Griesel have been replaced by Reink Mast, Eli Rice, and Brice Williams where outside shooting is a strength. Heck, they're taking all those 3s and Keisei Tominaga has yet to see the floor. Here's to hoping for another smooth ride before the competition starts to pick up. Lawrence actually only shot 50% at the rim last year which is pretty poor, and that showed up on film. He's not terribly explosive athletically, and touch around the rim has looked to be a problem as well. That's definitely an area in which he needs to improve if he's going to be the player Nebraska fans think he can be.2 points -

Man he looks old. Good thing none of us have aged since his coaching days at NU! I think he was instructed to run a clean program and bring the graduation rate up, which he did. He just thought he could win with coachable kids that did not have the athleticism most of his conference opponents would have. It did not work and it was too little too late when he tried to recruit differently. He seemed like a good guy the little I interacted with him.2 points -
He will probabky remain on NIT selection committee to kick us in the nuts when we get fourth in big ten and go on road in NIT.2 points

HHC circa 2018: "Man, we never get any Nebraska kids." HHC circa 2021: "Man, we can't survive on just the transfer portal. We've got to get some high school recruits." HHC circa 2024: "Man, we'll have to recruit some right-handed shooters eventually, right?" OK, I'm stoked for this season, too. Don't get me wrong. But the news of the day is signing two high-ranking high school shooters. Both left-handed. One from Nebraska, who upclassified from a '25 recruit to a '24 recruit. Janowski has recently been upgraded to a Rivals 4-star. Frager is listed as the #147 prospect in the '25 class by 24/7. That's star power. It's high school recruiting. It's getting a local kid. There's a lot to love in the news of today.2 points -

https://247sports.com/college/nebraska/article/husker-womens-basketball-announces-commitment-of-britt-prince--219847481/ Yeah we all got caught up with fantastic news that Britt has signed on to Nebraska along with Kennadi Williams (two future Lincoln Southwest basketball players will be playng husker hoops - one on both the mens and womens team). Yet what has flown under the radar is the signing of Amiah Hargrove. She appears to be a great signing as well. Her papa was a long time NFL'r, which tells me that she has competitive lineage. regardless, welcome aboard Amiah!!!1 point -

54% on close 2s last year. Probably below average right? But it was on relatively low volume (Griesel took 4x as many close 2s and was 57.8%). JL was shooting 28.5% from the field prior to entering the rotation. In conference play, I was pretty impressed with his ability, as a true freshman, to finish through contact in the lane. 54% on close 2s was where Glynn Watson was at as a senior.1 point -

I would definitely take the $99 season tickets but Barry was a huge disappointment at Nebraska. But let's be fair, he is not the only coach you can say that about at Nebraska. Barry had a 36 - 60 conference record at Nebraska and played an extremely boring style of basketball. He for sure left Nebraska in a mess but was just glad to see him go and can't blame him for leaving.1 point -

Allick is very very exciting. He is healthier than at New Mexico. Explosive and competitive. If he comes off the bench it is simply because of rotational items so he can stagger with Mast. We have to improve shot selection. Too many guys taking stupid threes to quick and not wide open.1 point -

It's sort of funny to me how people seem to be down a bit on Boogie. I saw a guy who passes like he knows where everyone is supposed to be on offense, was able to hit our bigs for easy buckets, and at least one Sam Griesel backdown on a smaller defender.1 point -

I’m not so sure SH isn’t our best defender. He creates havoc on the defensive end, is probably our best passer on offense and shot 40.9% from 3 last year. He isn’t just a feel good story, he’s a feature. I’d probably feel comfortable with him taking a clutch 3 over anybody other than KT. The combined hustle and energy between him and Allick is noticeable. You have to have at least one of them on the court at all times to drive urgency IMO. Tons to love from what we saw tonight. Second chance points via hustle and rebounds will be huge if it continues.1 point
