Letter from athletic department
seaofred92 and 6 others reacted to Buglem for a topic
After getting home from the game, we found we had received a letter from the Husker athletic department. As a long time season ticket holder, I made the only logical conclusion based on years go experience and told my wife "probably an order form for a possible NIT home game." WRONG!!! It was an order form for possible NCAA tournament games! While I know we have a long ways to go to make the dance, how exciting it was to FINALLY receive a letter talking about the dance! And yes, if we make it, we are going! It doesn't matter where we play, I'll be there dressed in red and yelling "Husker Power" during the opponents starting lineup introductions. Full disclosure, there were NIT forms in the envelope too but I'm hoping we don't need those!7 points -
OFFENSE: D+ I give Nebraska a slightly harsh "D+" because they missed about seven layups in this contest that could have turned this into a laugher and led to a 16-20 point victory. The Huskers shot just 37% from the field (including an ice cold 23% from downtown) and needed every one of those 54 points to make this a somewhat comfortable win. NU has seen teams adjust to its offensive scheme of isolating Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields the last couple of games and will need Walter Pitchford, Ray Gallegos and even Tai Webster to start combining for 6-8 three pointers a game if its to pull out either game this week. Another cold night for Petteway (3-12 from the field, 10 points) but the good news is the third time is a charm, and I bet he comes out on fire Wednesday night in Bloomington. Shields is our Player of the Game thanks to a double-double (17 and 10) in 36 minutes. DEFENSE: A Nebraska held yet another B1G opponent under 40% from the field - I've yet to receive the game notes from Shamus, but I believe that's eight straight Big 10 teams under 40% from the Huskers, which is the first time that's happened since the 1990-1991 season. That could be slightly off, but it's close. Nebraska was just TOUGH defensively. I loved the way Ray Gallegos and Petteway played on defense - they didn't let their combined 5-21 from the field affect the way they got after it. Slightly concerning that Alex Olah scored a game high 20 points, but I'd rather have him go off than Drew Crawford (who finished with just 11). REBOUNDING: A Nebraska out boarded Northwestern by eleven (40 to 29)!!! That is AWESOME. What I liked even more is that the Huskers held the Wildcats to just five offensive boards. While I'm aware Northwestern doesn't attack the offensive glass much, that's still damn impressive. We mentioned Shields above with 10 boards - also a shout out to Pitchford, who grabbed 9. At the start of this year, Walt played soft and was often criticized on this very report card as such. He deserves big time credit for elevating his toughness and game. It's never talked about around here, but he should also be in consideration (along with Petteway, Shields and Parker) for Most Improved Player. BALL HANDLING: C Nebraska finished with a solid ten turnovers, with five coming in the first six or seven minutes. Mark me down as becoming slightly concerned with Tai Webster. Nearly every game this year, he's had more turnovers than assists, and that continued tonight (1:4). Some will say, "That's fine. He'll play the "2" next year or in the future and play as a combo guard." But the shot looks nowhere close enough for that, and if he's not playing point, he loses a good portion of his value. I'm by no means trying to bring the kid down; he's just a freshman. However, he's DEEP into his freshman year and playing much more than freshman minutes, and it doesn't seem as if he's improving as fast as anyone expected. Add in Benny Parker as clearly the better point guard at this juncture (not close - getting to the rim, not turning it over, defense, finishing) and I'm a bit nervous about the future. COACHING: B Coach Miles made a nice switch to "the zone" and his team got good shots for a large majority of the night - they just missed them around the rim. NU still won by seven in a "must win game" and had they made the shots they should have, they win by 16-20 points. How can you not give Miles a solid "B" for this one? OVERALL GRADE: B This is a good - not very good, not great, win. It isn't going to impress anyone, but neither was winning by 20. NU could only have its destiny changed by losing this one, and they didn't. Now... MUST win one this week (preferably Wisconsin if we have to choose) to keep NCAA hopes alive. Win both, you're a lock for the tournament. Win one, and you probably need two wins in the Big 10 tournament to be a lock. Lose both and you're staring the NIT in the face unless you get to the final game of the Big 10 tournament. My hunch? Petteway comes to life Wednesday night... Pitchford and Gallegos connect on 5 or 6 combined three's.. and NU sneaks one out in Bloomington. For now, let's just stick to looking at that game. A win would sure make next Sunday a fun day and one without near as much stress. I've got a feeling the last two games are going to be "heart attack central" for us as fans - and that's a GREAT feeling to be having this late in the year for the first time since March of 1999. PLAYER OF THE GAME: SHAVON SHIELDS 2013-2014 PLAYER OF THE GAME RESULTS: TERRAN PETTEWAY - 13 SHAVON SHIELDS - 7 WALTER PITCHFORD - 3 TAI WEBSTER - 2 LESLEE SMITH - 2 DEVERELL BIGGS - 1 This post has been promoted to an article5 points

Honestly I think it's more based on the fact not many bigs can make the transition smoothly in year one unless they are extremely special. Plenty of bigs, even when ranked in the 150, redshirt or play limited minutes in year one so the expectations I think are more tempered for that reason. They are like OL in football to me. Takes some time for the ROI.3 points -

2014 recruits
fred1212 reacted to Row6Seat10 for a topic
A thread was started which listed some of the 2014 recruits the Huskers were looking at on the other board so I thought I would start it again over here so as to keep discussion going and to keep us somewhat updated with the future recruits of Husker WBB. Here is the list with a brief description on each and the schools showing interest in them. There will be more added to this list as time goes on no doubt. Chatrice White (2014) 6'3 post Shelby/Rising City She has stated that she will make her decision after the end of the Nebraska high school season in March or April. Offered by Nebraska, Iowa, Iowa State, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Michigan State and Purdue. Notre Dame and Stanford are showing interest. Committed to Illinois 4-28-2013 Tatum Neubert (2014) 6'2 post out of Elizabeth CO. She's starting to gather looks from other schools out west such as Wyoming, Colorado, Indiana. Kansas St, Boise St. and Stanford. Committed to Oregon 8-1-2013 Jasmine Lumpkin (2014) 6' guard out of Joliet Catholic High School, IL. She essentially landed an offer every 2 days during the month of August, picking up a grand total of 16 offers. Here are the 16 schools that have officially made an offer: Purdue, Michigan State, Louisville, Kansas St, Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Marquette, Indiana, Auburn, Ball State, Toledo, Dayton, Wright State, and Arizona State. Committed to Michigan St 5-14-2013 Jasmine Cincore (2014) 5'9 combo guard from Briarcrest Christian in Memphis Has been offered by UAB and has visited Auburn, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, UAB, UT Martin and Georgia State. She will visit Ole Miss on Sept. 8th and later this fall will visit Nebraska, Michigan, Florida, Vandy, K-State, Louisville, Marquette, Indiana, and Memphis." Committed to the Huskers 6-20-2013 Gabrielle Ortiz (2014) 5'7 guard Racine Prairie WI Averaged 18.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists this season. Is considered by some to be the most talented player in the state of Wisconsin. She has an offer from Nebraska but most likely isn't too hip on it. Has shown most interest in Purdue, Michigan St., Miami, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma. Committed to Oklahoma 8-31-2013 Haley Lorenzen (2014) a 6'3 forward from Iowa City IA. She has the Huskers listed as one of the seven schools she is considering. As a sophomore she averaged 13.2 points 5.7 rebounds and had 21 blocks. Could be hard pulling her out of Iowa City though. Along with Nebraska, she has Florida, Iowa St, Northwestern, Louisville, Marquette and obviously Iowa. She took an unofficial visit to Iowa St and visited Florida before that. She is the daughter of former Iowa basketball great Al Lorenzen. Committed to Florida 1-4-2013. Natalie Romeo (2014) 5'8 point guard from Carondelet HS in Concord CA. Offered by Nebraska over a year ago. Her junior year, Natalie averaged 21.3 ppg, 6.5 assists, 6.2 steals and 5.6 rebounds per game. She went for 30 or more points five times with a high of 34 against Archbishop Mitty in the Nor Cal playoffs. She also has offers from Arizona, Oregon, USC, Utah, Louisville, Gonzaga, Ohio State, Washington, Boston College among others. Committed to the Huskers 8-1-2013 Ivy Brown (2014) 6' forward Larue County HS. Hodgenville, KY Brown averaged 19.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and she shot 70% from the line and 37% from behind the arc her sophomore year. Interest from many schools including Louisville, St. John’s, Western Kentucky, Miama (FL), Virginia Tech, Nebraska, Indiana, Stanford, Xavier among others. Committed to Western Kentucky 9-4-2013 Kaylee Page (2014) 6'2 forward from Wamego High School KS Nebraska has been chasing Kaylee for sometime and she has shown some interest in us but that may be all it is. Kaylee is most likely the best recruit to come out of Kansas next year. She took a trip to Oklahoma St two weeks ago and last week was at Stanford. OSU looks to be the favorite right now. Beside the Huskers she also has interest from KU, Colorado and Missouri. We have a better chance to land her sister Lanie who is in the 2015 class and who some consider a better player than Kaylee. Committed to the Huskers 5-15-2013 Mariya Moore (2014) 6' guard from Salesian High School in Hercules, CA Strong power player with inside- out potential. Constantly attacking and not afraid to attack opposing size inside. Can finish around the rim and utilizes the reverse effectively. Will need to refine the perimeter skills. At one time and maybe still is considering Nebraska. Has offers from Vanderbilt, Ohio St, Louisville, UCLA, USC, Oregon, Kentucky, Tennessee, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, California, Arizona St. Oregon St. & Nevada and now Nebraska again. Committed to Louisville 7-31-2013 Erykah Davenport (2014) 6'2 center from Tucker High School in Tucker, GA a suburb of Atlanta. Davenport is a high BCS prospect who has already received offers from Georgia State and Central Florida, and is getting a lot of attention from BCS schools such as Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Purdue. Committed to Miami FL 9-28-2013 Charise Holloway (2014) 5'9 forward from St. Mary's High School in Stockton, CA. Strong player capable of putting up huge numbers on any given night. Her game has an advanced element of "power" and she's an exceptional leaper. Has offers from UNLV, Hawaii, Utah, Nebraska and Mississippi and garnering a lot of attention from Michigan, Arizona, Oklahoma, Arizona St, Washington St, Memphis, Seton Hall, plus many more. Committed to Arizona 8-10-2013 Kia Nurse (2014) 6'1 guard from St. Thomas More HS in Hamilton, Ontario. Has played for the Ontario National team for several years now. Lead the Canadian U17 team to a Bronze Metal with a win over Japan at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships. Has garnered much interest from the B1G. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, and Penn State with late interest from UConn and Tennessee. Has visited Indiana. Blue Star now has her ranked as the 10th best prospect in the 2014 class. Commited to UConn 11-18-2013 Brittany McPhee (2014) 5'11 forward from Mt. Rainier HS in Des Moines, WA. Has Nebraska, Stanford, Arizona St and Gonzaga in her final four for colleges. Last season averaged 22.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, 2.8 assists and 2.6 blocks per game as a junior and was named the Gatorade Player of the year in Washington. Committed to Stanford 8-6-2013 Darrien Washington (2014) 6'3 center from Skyline High School located in Oakland CA. Nebraska is showing a lot of interest in the Cal Stars Nike Elite center. Darrien average 16.4 points 12.6 rebounds and 5 blocks per game her junior year. Her offer list includes Oregon, Oregon St, Arizona St, Utah, Washington and St. Mary's. Committed to the Huskers 9-1-2013 Chandler Smith (2014) 6'1 wing from Brewster WA. Fundamental perimeter performer handles and attacks in transition; court awareness, reads pressure, passes with IQ on break; elevates on mid-range game to the arc with soft touch; a sleeper in the 2014 class. Arizona St. Nebraska, Oregon St, Baylor, Washington St, Gonzaga and Oregon all showing interest. Commited to the Huskers 11-14-20131 point -

My favorite part of the game was after shavon hit that clutch mid-range jumper, and he pointed to himself and yelled at Miles to "get me the ball! Get me the ball!" Then after the Benny charge, he jumped to the rafters celebrating. Gave a heck of a leg kick too. Shields has show some serious fire in the last two home games. He was jawing with one of the Johnson's after a three telling the guy that he's giving too much room, and he'll be shooting that all game. His confidence just seems so high1 point

... we are guaranteed to finish no worse than tied for 6th place in conference. And, for at least a moment, we'd be in a tie with Ohio State for 4th place. Think about that a second. None of the 6 teams below us can jump over us. They all have at least 9 losses in conference. They cannot get beyond 9 wins. And, by winning tomorrow, we reach 9 wins and are assured of no worse than a .500 finish in conference play. When was the last time we won at least half of our conference games and finished in the top half of the conference standings? Long damn time ago.1 point -

Throwback uniforms vs Northwestern
hhcmatt reacted to CrazyforNUHOOPS for a topic
Yup, better than the black unis! Since the blacks are 0h-for-ever in the win column...if you believe in jinxes...the blacks need to be packed in a secure metal box, locked and loaded within along with heavy metal weights, boarded on a craft cruising over the Mariana Trench and jettisoned once the craft reaches the deepest point of the trench. Yet, if you agree with Cookie's view...the blacks do look cool...(I still wear my black leather cap that went with the old blacks from the Nee era)... But if we do pull some blacks out in the future...then for God's sake, wait until next year and make it against the Sisters of the Poor, so we can win one in them to remove some of the stench! We are 3-8 wearing red uniforms this season. What should we do with those?1 point -

Most of the time fading down the stretch wasn't shooting ourselves in the foot, it was just part of playing teams who had better players. During the ebb and flow of a long season, a team will catch somebody at the right time and get a couple of good wins (e.g. Texas at home in '11), but it doesn't mean the team is suddenly a different team and on par with NCAA teams. I can't think of a team since we went 10-6 in the league in approximately '99 where we had clear cut NCAA talent and for whatever reason didn't make the dance. Maybe a couple of woulda-couldas, but most of the teams that got bubble status talk at some point in the season weren't that good.1 point
