uneblinstu's postgame chatter: vol 14; ed 3 - vs. Creighton

That sucked. Then was fun. Then sucked again.

That's about all I can muster right now.

I'll come up with some other thoughts tomorrow, maybe...

I want to apologize to Cam Mack for anything I may have posted here about his style of play 2 years ago. I've now truly witnessed horrific point guard play.

I think the mid-December version of the 2019-20 team might beat this team by 15.

This team does not do anything well at this point, other than shoot free throws. Even most of the 3s they made tonight were not in the flow of the offense. It's not sustainable. Their defense is a complete joke. Nobody is in the right position to guard or rebound ... often because the other players are having to rotate and get out of position to make up for a particular player going rogue or for the same player just not paying attention.

Hope we can get to 8 wins this season. That's about the only unknown left to be decided.

Verge...does he make it past Christmas...I'll hang up and listen.

Biggs, Mack, Allen, all jucos...have not worked out. He went Juco before ASU, and it has me a bit concerned. I hope I'm wrong about Verge. He could be the guy who rights the ship or burns it down.

That was Walker's worst game as a Husker. Zero points on offense and Kalkbrenner made him look like a mediocre defender and rebounder. Lat made some threes, but was very poor defensively and is still a liability if he puts the ball on the floor. We were better with Eduardo and/or Breidenbach on the court. We were obviously better with Kobe and CJ on the court. The ball actually moved around and we played with a purpose. Trey has a broken foot. I say throw Kobe out there with 4 freshmen - CJ, Bryce, Wilhelm and Eduardo - and let them go. Kobe's presence on the court is great for the young guys. He's constantly encouraging and giving constructive criticism. I loved how he wouldn't let Eduardo complain to the ref after a foul. Those 4 freshman play hard, have talent and just need some time and repetition to learn how to play at this level. Keon and Keisei, as well. Play the young guys and don't process ANY of the underclassmen after the season. Stick with them and let's build an actual team.

As Husker fans, we don't even need to win. We're used to losing. We just want a team that's enjoyable to watch and easy to root for.

    Man...

    1) i seriously question our toughness. Smoked on the boards again but plenty of that came from CU winning what felt like every 50/50 ball. Too many guys ball watching, just standing around, or not crashing hard for boards. I really liked Hawkins at NWMSU and im not suprised he was a huge X factor tonight. Certain guys seem mentally tough , others far from it.

    2) Everything about our defense sucked. Just straight up sucked. Horrible transition D which leads to uncontested shots or bigs running out on shooters which leads to Kalkbrenner and Hankins eating up O boards. In thr half court dudes were flat footed, getting beat off the dribble, were late in roatation, and struggled to communicate. Im sure just about every Defensive possession from this game could be clipped and have several things to correct.

3.) Shot quality is an issue. 0 and 1 pass threes without getting a piece of the paint arent the best looks and it seemed like late in the game where we could have strung some baskets together to tie the game someone would take a questionable shot at best instead letting the offense flow. Just about everybody is to blame from bryce and lat to wilhelm and andre

4.) All this and we still had a chance. Cant spot too many teams almost a 20 point lead and expect to win. I guess we shouldnt be suprised to see us struggle with 2 true freshman in our top 7. Hoibergs offense is probably a little too intricate for them right now but i hope that as the season progresses we look alot smoother. However we will NOT see the improvement we want if we cant get stops. We are rrally tough in transition but cant get to it when we are constantly taking the ball out of the net

Say what you want about the players, but this starts at the top. Hoiberg’s “best player” the past three years has been a transfer who is a black hole and refuses to run the offense. All three years our team has looked better when said players were not playing. Either break these kids or bench them. His offense is either too complicated, our teams aren’t good enough to run it, or he lacks the leadership to get them to run it. We get outhustled badly. All our players play like they’re potential lottery picks and don’t need to play hard. Spoiler: most of you stink…that’s why you had to transfer to the worst major basketball school ever…so maybe hustle.

Trey - Has always been more athlete than basketball player. He got convinced he’s better than he is because he was one of the better players on a 7 win team. Good defender. Great dunker.

Bryce - His parents should be thrown in jail for letting him come play Nebrasketball. Clearly talented. His teammates all think they are more talented.

Walker - Would be a great 7th man on a tournament team. Good energy which is rare on this team.

Lat- Hits shots sometimes I guess.

Verge - Thinks he’s Allen Iverson. Is actually a poor man’s Bo Spencer. At least Bo and Teddy and Cam before him were fun sometimes. There is nothing fun about watching this young man play basketball.

Wilcher - Plays ok in spurts. Also abuses those spurts as an excuse to be a black hole for several possessions at a time. Bro, you averaged like 2 pts last year…run the offense.

Ed - He’s trying to force it to justify his minutes and does not have the talent to force it. Just crash the boards and be tall, big fella.

Webster - Always liked his game. Wish he had a little help tonight.

Breidenbach - Not ready to play major college basketball. I know he’s a fan favorite, but big homie has cinderblock feet. He’ll be a solid upperclassman if he sticks around.

Keisei - I fell in love with a 6’1” Japanese boy this summer, and it sure seems my crush read too many of his press clippings. Horrible shot selection so far. This hurts my heart to say, but he should not be in the rotation.

Edwards - I keep seeing he played minutes, but I struggle to remember seeing him on the court through 3 games. Is that bad? Heard he had a nice dunk one time in a scrimmage.

This sucks. We suck again. Go Big Red I guess.

I hope I'm wrong about Verge too, but at this point it feels like he's got every pocket stuffed with matches and he's carrying gas cans in both hands.

I don't think it was a coincidence we made our best/only big run with him sitting and watching.

We might get Trey back for Kansas State. That's 9 games

Or... he's back for the Indiana on January 17th.  That's 20 games.

    Ouch.

I like Trey and feel for him, but I just don't think it matters for this team. Having two guards out there who can't shoot makes it really tough to do anything offensively.

I honestly have no motivation to go to anymore games.  I drive from Omaha and its not worth it anymore.  At this point its better to just watch at home. NE had no business being down that much and losing tonight.  Get it fixed Fred!!!

You're not alone. We're gonna have a big, beautiful, new, empty arena soon if this doesn't get fixed.

Almost a completely brand new team for McDermott, and look how well he has them moving, cutting, and passing.  Every.  Single.  Year.  It’s what I thought maybe our offense would look like this year, but it’s just more of the same for us.

The spacing they have is excellent.  Why NE cant do that with their shooters blows my mind.

We literally look like we aren’t coached. There’s zero way FH forgot how to coach (or never could). What is happening? We look like a team that the coach is afraid to hold them accountable. I don’t see, when I watch, what we drill. Offensively or defensively. What do we practice? We look like we’re playing pick up ball.

I can tell you exactly what Creighton practices and what they drill, btw.

It's wild. 10 years ago Hoiberg takes over Mac's awful ISU teams, turns them into Sweet 16 teams. Now Mac is coaching circles around Hoiberg.

For the first time since Hoiberg has been here, I am confident in our free throw shooting, and saying getting to the line 9 times is not good for us.  We went the first two games, making 49 free throws, while the opponents attempted 30 free throws.

Doc needs to go to work with Verge and Bryce.  They play way too straight up on defense.  If brfrad sees it, the coaches have to see it.  That needs to get addressed.  It was no surprise they got beat off the dribble.

The game was lost with 16 minutes to go when we are down 1, and get the ball.  We get an offensive foul on Bryce.  We let Creighton have 3 shots the next trip, finally grab a rebound, miss a shot.  We have 2 chances to take the lead, and fail.  After 3 1/2 minutes, we go down 6.

Edwards had one of the poorest decisions I have seen, and no surprise he gets 0 minutes in the 2nd half.  We have the ball with 23 seconds left in the first half, down 3.  We have a chance to go down 1 or tied at half, and he decides to shoot a 3 with 15 seconds left.

    My starting line-up is:

    Kobe

    Verge

    Bryce

    Wilcher

    Andre

Kobe needs to be our main PG and Verge needs to play off the ball.  Verge is NOT a PG.

Bryce was bound to struggle.  Needs to figure out how not to force shots.  Backdoors should have been the name of his game, all night.

I am not given up on this team, yet.  We need to win these next 4 games by double digits.

Will say these refs were not calling much of anything out there compared to the previous games..  definitely let the players play.  Not saying it’s an excuse but we got to learn to adjust

Never falling for the Husker hype machine again. Star city. Pff.  When does Husker sports get fun again?

I had a blast watching Bolt's Boys punch the #1 team in the mouth and embrace a challenge. Basketball and Football have looked nutless for a couple years now, lets see if Hoiberg's boys have some dog in them - I'm guessing no, but never know.
