Feels like if we can get through the BYU visit without him committing and get him to visit here we're in good shape. It seems like in this NIL world that players commit to the last school they visit (or only). Our commits were Morgan, Worster, Meah, Essegian, Griffiths and as far as I'm aware we were the only or last visit for all of them. People we didn't get: Kyle, Fidler, Milicic, visited here but went elsewhere after.

Makes sense I guess. These players and coaching staffs aren't going to waste their time with a visit only to come in with a max offer less than what they just came from. Hopefully we can get this kid to campus later this week and close the deal.

Washington hired him for 2 million. Wild. I wasn't even impressed with him in their two tournament games. Limited offensively, and will be even more so at the Big Ten level. Gets to the line but is a poor FT shooter. Also not a great rim protector (zero blocks against TCU and Purdue). Think his numbers will look more like they did two years ago with Montana than this year with Utah State.

So Good, then, not Great?

This is from a BYU message board this a.m.:

KY and staff are working it. According to @BYUMBBrecruit we’re top 2 along …
…with Nebraska for Berke Buyuktuncel. Robby McCombs reporting the same. Does the news of our starting 4 Noah Waterman hitting the portal and the lack of another 4 on the roster put us in the driver’s seat for Berke? Nebraska lost a couple of 4’s in the transfer portal but picked up one from NDSU stretch 4 Andrew Morgan. Morgan is a good player, avg’d 12.9 pts and shot 36.4% from 3 last season and is likely their starting 4 for next season. As things stand right now it looks like Berke has an easier path to playing time at BYU. He arrived Monday night for his OV at BYU Tuesday, then he has an OV at Nebraska according to McCombs.

That's just a BYU message board trying to make themselves feel good. Something we never do around here. 😉  Fred just needs to convince Berke he can provide a more direct route to the NBA than what BYU can provide.

Just asking...does BYU have many foreign born players?  We seem to have a number successfully going through our system (and yes, some not so successful).  Just wondering if our successes make any difference.

They do, but usually those foreign-born players are Mormon. BYU, the city of Provo, and even the surrounding Utah County are such a completely different culture than anywhere else in America. This isn’t like Creighton, where the religious-affiliation has little impact on a player’s life. Or even like Notre Dame, which is unapologetically Catholic but has a significant number of non-Catholic students and student-athletes. BYU is…different.

Berke is either going to leave his BYU visit thinking it’s the last place on earth he wants to go to school, or he will love it. There is no in between.

probably not the word you were looking for.

It was indeed the word I was looking for.  Why wouldn’t it be? And a quick google search shows that ND uses the same phrase to describe themselves, so I really don’t understand what your issue is with it.

Wonder if Berke is excited to really... soak... up the culture at BYU?

The person quoted is an alum, who also misuses it, imo.

adverb

  1. in a way that does not accept fault or shows no regret or shame:

I'm not sure why someone would need to accept fault or show shame over their religion. I accept fault for nitpicking and I apologize.

The death toll from the Catholic Crusades is estimated at 1.7 million people.  Admittedly I'm not the best with etiquette, but that may warrant an apology.
