He’s a grad transfer, so he has one season of eligibility, so he literally fills Banton’s empty spot for ‘21-‘22, and will leave that spot open again for the 2022 recruiting class. It’s a win-win. Teddy Allen Cam Mack Deverell Biggs Sometimes talented transfers actually make the team worse. Not saying Alonzo is the fourth to add to the list, I don't know. But there is a recent track record of Me First stars hurting the team. That's why so many fans are washing their red kool-aid down with a grain of salt. HuscurAdam and 49r 1 1 Quote

That's my main goal," Verge said. "I'm a big winner. That's really what I came to Nebraska for, is to win and help those guys win. My main goal for myself is to be that leader that the guys need. Honestly, I have no individual goals. Obviously, I want to play well, but I just want to win and take these guys to the NCAA Tournament." Now granted, I've never read an article where a kid says "I don't care about the other guys in the locker room, I came here to pad my stats!" But you do read articles where a guys says "the coach really knows how to get me to the NBA" or "I feel like this is the best place for me to raise my game to the next level" or other similar statements. So the fact that he says he wants to be a leader and win regardless of individual accolades seems like a positive coming from a guy being added this late in the off-season. busticket, BjoeHusker, Vinny and 1 other 4 Quote

Swan88 Posted July 8, 2021 Report Posted July 8, 2021 49r posted above Alonzo Verge's 2021 stats--"2021 Game Data." To see something impressive, run down the side-by-side columns for DR and A to see: lots of 4 to 8 defensive rebounds; and lots of 4 to 9 assists. Here's guessing that Hoiberg & Co. think they can make hay at NU out of those skills, which are Banton-esque. The free throw column is also impressive. Here's guessing Hoiberg & Co. believe a point guard's 80% free throw skill will come in handy during "foul-'em" time at the end of games--that's one clear improvement over Banton. REDitus Posted July 8, 2021 Report Posted July 8, 2021 Interesting addition. I like the fact that he is a grad transfer and adds experience to the team especially at the ball handler spots. I think it increases the flexibility of the lineup as the backcourt is flush now and players can spill over to the wings if necessary. I always like to think teams should be filled from the edges in. (Get your ball handlers and bigs squared away and then fill in the inner spots.) Quote

This kid did his time at Juco, then ASU, now grad transfer. To me this is a bit of "one of these things is not like the other" in a good way. Nebrasketballer, HuscurAdam and Silverbacked1 3 Quote

hhcmatt Posted July 8, 2021 Report Posted July 8, 2021 Didn't know anything about Verge coming into this other than he was the guy who put up 43 in a 40 point loss. In terms of replacing Banton, we're bringing in PG type who will give us an open scholarship for 2022. In terms of just Banton, this is a loss on the back end in terms of rim protection. Verge is pretty good on the boards though he's no Banton there either. The 3pt numbers are meh but relative to Banton, it's quite the improvement. The FT numbers indicate the 3pt numbers have a chance to move up, especially in this Nebraska offense that will give him wide open looks. ASU is uptempo but not as assist heavy which to me says when they're not breaking, they're playing ISO ball. Feels like for our break Verge may bring back the Mack/Burke/Cheatham 'You know i'm running and still can't stop it' break that we could spam for easy points. The assist numbers give me hope for our half court but I felt the same way about Kobe. Feel good about this pull. Norm Peterson and Nebrasketball1979 1 1 Quote

Everyone knew about the character issues and baggage that Allen, Biggs, and Mack were bringing before they even got to Nebraska. I don’t think those are very apples to apples comparisons to Verge Jr. Quote
