Some of the points CWG mentioned is why I am still optimistic for this year.   I'd feel better if White was still here....but I still think we can be competitive.

Mostly because we now have a complete lineup.   Miles has even spoke about it in the past, about having empty minutes.   In the past, we had times where we would have 1,2 or even 3 guys on the floor who were simply no threat to score.   Teams left Parker practically unguarded at times and we couldn't make them pay for it.   We'll, for the first time, be putting a lineup on the floor where all 5 guys have the ability to produce.   We may not have the definitive go to guy to show for it right now...but we'll have 5 guys instead of 3 that can do something.   That takes a lot of pressure off.

Great post and point.  As much as I hate CU, that is how they are so effective in that you have to pretty much play everyone straight up since all 5 guys on the floor are a scoring threat.  That is how I see our team this year with not having the "go to" guy like we have had in the past.  As we've learned, we tend to give that guy the ball and expect him to make something happen while the other guys get in a "stand around and watch" mode.  Again, that is what makes CU so effective is they move the ball very well and are all good shooters which is why NU seems to have a hard time guarding them since Coach M like to double team a lot and they move the ball so quickly that his defense isn't as effective against teams like that.

I think we all can agree that losing Benny is probably a good thing moving forward and Shavon was inconsistent at times this past year.  AWIII is a good shooter but isn't not very athletic in the open court or creating his own shot.  I could see the team this year being better overall with these 3 players gone.  Team chemistry is a huge deal in basketball and I could see it being very good this year.  I can't wait for the season to get here.  I still get excited just walking to the mailbox each day hoping my tickets will be there.

Especially since we paid for them about 3 years ago.....   ;)

Odd.  I actually would say 'consistency' was one of Shavon's strengths.  No data to back that up, just a general perception of his game over the last few years.

Shavon was inconsistent at times this past year.

In what regards?  I would say consistent is one one the words I would have used to describe Shields' play last year.

There were times that the team would sit and wait for him to do something and he had to force that a lot more than you would like which lead to him being dead at the end.

Might have been a poor choice of wording on my part but it seemed that Shavon was really on or really off.  There were games where he was really good and put the team on his back but other games where teams would take away his strength in driving to the rim were the games where he would struggle.  Those games where he was well scouted and couldn't get to the rim and was forced to be a jump shooter is where he was "inconsistent".

Agreed with kldm.

Shavon is/was a very good player for us.   But he had some real stinkers for us.   Creighton, of course.   He had a handful of games at the beginning of the Big 10 were he wasn't very good.   Most remember him coming back strong after the injuries with some real good games against Penn State and Purdue and the conference tourney....but there were some real winnable games early on in the conference play where he was off.

He did have a few off nights, all guys do.  To bad that our NBA prospect disappeared so often too.

Of course everyone has off nights.   But supposedly for our best player who is a 4 year starter and all Big 10 honoree....it happened more than you'd like it too.

And I will contend that IF that was the case the NBA caliber player should have helped out and made his life easier.  Didn't happen.  Until we get that pure shooter(s) to open lanes to the rim, we will have to count on our scorers being able to get through traffic to do so.  Having a big to dump the ball to will help also.

The feel-good quotes aren't going to matter to anyone negative recruiting on it.  And they're just that; feel-good.  Neither Miles nor Eichorst mean what they said about this.  No love there.   But Bounds really likes Miles, so I doubt this will help SE on that front.

I don't see it as a good thing OR a bad thing, personally.  It's the nature of the biz and frankly, the results of the past two years don't really warrant an extension at this time anyway.  Again, IMO.

Tim has the core of what may eventually be a pretty solid group for him, so negative recruiting - while never a good thing - is better this year than it will be in say a year from now when he'll have a fair number of slots to fill.  By then, we hope things will be trending in a good direction with the program.  If not, it may be time to start thinking about cutting ties and moving on.

I by no means want to see anything other than to see the program play in the postseason and see some consistency in the roster.  Again, I think we have the core group now that can accomplish just that.  But to remain complacent and say "well, finishing consistently in the 9th to 12th spot in the conference is okay for the foreseeable future" is just not acceptable.  Especially when we're paying top half of the conference money for the coaching staff.

Light a fire in the staff, let's go!

Made me go hmm, especially the timing of it.  Why make an announcement about it whatsoever?  I personally see this as a negative.

They made a one year extension last year on May 25th. There is no way Leebo is just going to forget that nothing was done this year so either it's an interview with Leebo or else it's a Leebo story that Miles wasn't extended but with Lee filling in the blanks. This way you get the puff quotes.

I don't know what every coach in the B1G is signed through, but my first thought was to see what Chambers at Penn State is signed through.  Last year he got a 2 year extension through 2019, which is still shorter than what Miles has. He also just signed a big recruiting class.  My point is that I don't think this is going to hurt his recruiting, which is the most important thing.

This is what it is: Miles is going to sink, swim, or tread in the next 1-2 years and we'll go from there.

At least Eichorst explained his actions - or inactions.  I'm OK with it.  But yes, some opposing coach out there is going to use it as a negative recruiting tool against NU.

Either way these next two years will make or break Miles. If we're still losing key players early every year and finishing at the bottom of the standings he'll be gone. If we start winning and more importantly dancing (like I suspect we will) then he'll be allowed to stay as long as he pleases.

I'm okay with it. It's still ample time to show commitment, while lowering your liability on the books and putting a fire under the coach to perform. I'd say that's a bigger motivator than a bonus, and Miles gets it... He knows the administration will back him if he shows results. That's called pay-for-performance!

I would propose that any recruit basing his decision on signing on the number of years the head coach has on his contract is not the type recruit we want anyway. We should probably be looking for the type who think they are good enough to play here for any coach.
