This is where the coaching decision to not use all of our scholarships may start to come into play. We know we are down to 10 at best for the rest of the year. Any game to game injuries or a flu bug will just about wipe us out. TCU had that happen last year when they were in the top 25 and they had to forfeit a game and then add three walkons in the middle of the season.

  2. If you want to feel a little better about where we're at, the 3 teams we've lost to are 13-3 in the B1G so far (10-3 outside of beating NU); and the two teams we've beaten are 6-5 (6-3 outside of losing to NU). Gotta put this one behind us fast and take care of business Thursday against an RU team that's probably going to be on the bubble to make the B1G tourney. Absolutely can't lose that one.

    Slow Starts

I did a little research because it feels like this team doesn't get off to good starts and we're playing a lot of catch-up with our bench. I just used the first under-4 media timeout as a barometer for how we start the game (Fred usually makes his first subs then). Here's what I found: -We have outscored our opponents by +126 points this season. -In the first four minutes before the media timeout, we are -1 (131-132). The regular starting lineup we use is -11 (103-114) in the first four minutes. The three times we've deviated from it we are +10 (28-18). Small sample size, but those games were FDU, UNF and Michigan State. -Away from PBA it's really bad. In road/neutral games we are outscored -22 (56-78) before the first media timeout. We've trailed in 6 of 8 road/neutral games at the first break. In the other 36 minutes of neutral/road games, we are only a combined -10. -We're 12-4 overall so winning is great and our bench depth is very good, but this has overshadowed some red flags, in my opinion. Remember in some of our more competitive games, St. Mary's had us down 23-9 at one point. Bethune-Cookman had us down 10-4. Hawaii had us down 17-9. Oregon State was up 17-13 midway through the first half. UCLA 7-0. Iowa 13-6. Purdue...let's not even go there and that one obviously turned out uncompetitive. -Yes it's not how you start, it's how you finish. But constantly playing from behind out of the gate cannot mathematically set you up for sustained success in the long run. The only 2 games against real competition that we started well were at Creighton (12-8) and vs. Indiana (17-10). Could that be because Meah had a clearly defined role out there guarding a very good big man? Not sure. I don't think there's any one player to blame or any one player who would fix it. But something about the chemistry of that first 5 seems way off. We do not seem to come out with much intensity or execution at the start.

  5. Not whining at all....but have to think if the game was on our court, (or neutral court) ....it wouldn't been allowed to be so much "street ball". The constant no calls in Rutgers case, does make a difference. We did a real good job controlling the boards and that was part of the difference too, that kept us in the game. And our composer in the 4th, not just by Prince alone, was good to see. (But one of her best games so far.) Hargrove is kind of slowly becoming a beast as she gets up to college speed...and Bozen too. Saw her get right into the mix, knocking heads under the basket. Petrie is becoming a real contributor too. Losing Weidner was on their minds....they looked determined. ....Good stuff.

  9. Wasn't planning on a Husker win today. But even if Purdue shoots the lights out, you don't have to get absolutely embarrassed like that. I watched Penn State handle Purdue (they were ahead by 28 in the 2nd half of that game, then Purdue climbed back and lost by 11). Good teams, or just mentally tough teams, value every possession and fight like hell regardless of the score. That all starts and ends with Brice and Juwan. They are supposed to be the leaders. Within the first few minutes they were both hanging their heads, just like in the Michigan State game. Brice passed up an open shot in the first possession and that lack of aggression was the theme of the game. His casual demeanor might be good in that opposing defenders can't speed him up. But your movements need to be more violent, crisp and clean against tough Big Ten defenses. He gets the ball stripped too often. Every possession matters. Juwan again had 1 rebound. Zero defensive rebounds. Go back and rewatch any part of that game and you'll see Juwan not only not playing good on-ball defense, but also not helping and not rotating to close out and contest shots. Sam and Connor needed to play more than 22 minutes in a game like this. They provide energy that is desperately needed. They're the only two that box out every time a shot goes up. They're the only two that are constantly moving on both ends of the court. And right now they're both a threat to knock down an open shot (Sam is up to 40%3FG). The argument for Connor not playing more has been that he's a liability on defense and he's one dimensional offensively. He's playing pretty good defense right now and grabbed another 5 boards today. He's a good passer and in the last three games he's done a better job of creating for others than anyone outside of Brice. Had another 3 assists today. He was also 3 for 3 inside the arc in this game. Think we should run more for Berke on offense, like we did against St. Mary's. He's playing pretty efficient offensively, just very low volume. We still run 2 or 3 sets a game to try to get the ball to Meah on the block with his back to the basket. Why? It's ALWAYS a wasted possession. Every possession matters. Reminds me of when Miles would try to force feed Tshimanga the first possession of every game. Don't think we ever scored off those sets. I still like this team and think we could have a good season, but our two 6th year seniors need to step up and be the leaders this team needs. Edit - full disclosure: it's a bourbon Sunday for me, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

https://d1baseball.com/stories/2025-d1baseball-preseason-top-25-rankings/ Nice! Oregon is the only other B1G team on the list at #12. We'll get tested out of conference - LSU is #3, Oregon St is #7, Vandy is #16. I'm a little surprised Irvine didn't make it.

I would think Allison would want to give it up. But I have had 4 knee surgeries from the age of 16 to 27.. Twice from Football, Once from Basketball and Once from Volleyball. My doctor told me you would never be a runner and more than likely will need a whole new knee soon. I listened to him until I turned 30 and then I was like there is no way I am going to be that person. I got into the gym and trained even harder on my lower body and started taking care of myself a lot better. 2 years later I started running half marathons and now at 36 I am still playing volleyball competitively.. I do think its a mind over matter thing for someone if they truly want to keep it going. I honestly feel stronger and healthier than I ever did in college. I hope she takes her time and truly decides what is best for her. I am here for the support if she wants to keep going.

  15. While I agree with not trying to play anyone heavy minutes (37-40) per game but we need someone to step up with the loss of Weidner but we may not have a lot of choice to play Britt more minutes. She played 36+ yesterday. Hoping Rimdal is the one to step up. If we can get her to do that then I feel like we could keep Britt's minutes more around the 30 per game. Without Weidner our best three ball handlers are Britt, Hake, and Rimdal. Great to see JP coming into her own (plus our staff knowing how best to use her). What we really need is our shooters (Hake and Nissley) to get our of their funk and start making those threes.

  16. As someone said in the game thread, we likely wouldn’t have beaten Purdue regardless with the way they shot the ball. However, the entire program should be embarrassed by the lack of effort on both ends of the floor.

Id agree if Connor was playing well in big ten play. Other option is to move Sam into the starting lineup, but I think Fred would go small with Connor in for meah vs swapping PGs.

  19. There are multiple tiers starting to take shape, IMO. You have the likely top 5 that will separate themselves (Mich, MSU, PU, Ill, Ore) You also have a likely bottom 4 (Rutgers, Wash, Minny, NW). These are teams that you must beat. You can’t afford a loss here as most won’t lose to them and they’ll be a killer metrics wise. Especially if that games at home. Then you have a large group (IU, Wis, Iowa, MD, Neb, UCLA, OSU, USC, and PSU) of teams that will be battling it out for top half of the conference, NCAA tournament hopes, etc. It’s this group of teams we need to do well against. It’s this group that we will want to finish at or near the top of. Remaining in each group? Top 5 (0-2): Illinois, @Oregon, Michigan Bottom 4 (0-0): Rutgers, @Wash, @Northwestern, Minnesota Middle Tier (2-1): @MD, USC, @Wis, OSU, MD, @Penn St, @OSU, Iowa To dance, you probably need at least 3-1 against the bottom 4. 4-0 would be best but a loss on the road at Washington is the only acceptable loss. Against the top 5, you want to at least grab one of those home games… though both would be icing on the cake. Then you have the rest. Holding serve at home against the middle tier gives you 4 more wins. But realistically you probably want to go 5-3 against that middle tier.

Maybe so. We’ve seen this before - a talented player who loves the game and has the determination to play, but fate and the Universe just don’t cooperate and their promising careers are cut short. (Taylor Kissinger comes to mind)

  27. Looks like Adams was called for an intentional on JP. and Prince shot the ft's
    1 point
  28. I still can't figure that out. Petrie clearly was fouled by Adams - for her 5th. But JP didn't shoot at all. Had there been a TF, i expected that JP would shoot the two for that foul and then BP would shoot the tech. It was called an intentional, not a technical.

Taylor Kissinger used to tell me that they hated to play Rutgers, your arms were covered in scratches. to th e guy who said play Prince 37-38 minutes. No no no. She's a freshman. You risk burn out. 36. How fast things have changed. After the UCLA game, we all were talking about being worthy of being ranked, making sure we didn’t let Loesner go anywhere because he was our defensive mastermind. A few guys need to take a long look in the mirror. Ok, a lot of guys. I get it, it sucks to be blown out but have some pride. We showed no fight. Purdue made Nebraska look like what we did to Southern.

  37. We couldn't shoot, couldn't defend, couldn't take care of the ball, couldn't force turnovers, couldn't rebound. The one thing we did is make free throws. This was not Iowa beating us twice. This was the fact that we weren't ready to deal with Purdue's pressure. We should have been.

  38. I'm not sure any team in the country could've won that game today with as well as PU played and as motivated as they were. That said, a veteran team has to have more pride than that. Hope we show it Thursday vs RU.

There then lies the problem. There isn’t a lineup that we can throw out there that’s going to “score” with the best of them. We don’t have those kind of players.

  40. We better dig deep. This league is unforgiving and we’ll quickly play ourselves out of dancing.

  41. We’ve gotten our shit handed to us by two of the conferences power houses. Outside of that we’ve lost an overtime game against a good not great team at home and a two point loss to a team that looks better every week at a neutral site. I’d say we’re doing okay. Nobody would have beaten Purdue today with the shots that are falling for them. Any defense will look bad when an offense can go 4/4 on 15 foot contested push shots.

    2025 Baseball

I missed this when it was reported last month, but it looks like the B1G baseball tournament will take the top 12 teams and use a pod / bracket format like the ACC uses. So I think it's seeds 1-8-12 / 2-7-11 / 3-6-10 / 4-5-9 in each pod, which would be Tuesday thru Friday - 3 games at the site each day. The four pod winners play semifinals Saturday and the final is on Sunday. Definitely a good way to get more teams a chance to earn the NCAA bid - gives the top 4 seeds a big advantage, though, as if everyone ties at 1-1 in the pod, the highest seed advances. Basically, if you aren't the top seed in the pod, you can't advance to the semifinals unless you go 2-0. Last year in the ACC tournament, I don't think any of the top 4 seeds made the semifinal, so maybe it won't be as "chalk" as it feels like it could be. Will be nice from a fan attendance standpoint, as you know exactly when your team plays before the tournament starts. Ultimately, I think you have to get more than 8 teams to the conference tournament when you are only playing 10 of the 16 other teams during the regular season. If you draw a tough B1G schedule and finish 15-15, you deserve to have a guaranteed shot in the conference tourney. Wouldn't have a guaranteed shot in an 8-team tourney but everyone .500 or over will make it in a 12-team tourney, plus a few under .500 teams.
