Nice to see the Spanish team imported Big Ten refs for the games.6 points -
The reporter asked if this happened in Spain, and Fred declined to comment. Should the question be asked if something happened in Iowa, particularly considering so many of their student-athletes couldn't compete this spring because they gambled on sports online?4 points

I've been starting to think "screw it" just go full blown free agency. However with that in mind, allow programs to offer scholarships anywhere from 1-4 years. If a player and coach agree to a multi-year scholarship, that contract is binding (barring certain circumstances, but i don't want to turn this post into a novel). If a player chooses to leave before the end of the contract he is ineligible that next season3 points -

I don't know if this is on topic, but I don't have anything to add that the other posters haven't on their rankings... But what I will say is, I've never felt more confident and secure in a coach with such a bad record than I do with Fred. Like, I don't even feel like he's on the hot seat this year. Isn't that insane? I think I have basically given him a complete mulligan for his time under the previous AD, and then was very "happy" with the progress shown in his "true second year" last year under T-Rev. I feel like we made all the right portal moves this off-season. I have such a weird confidence for this team coming up, I don't even know what to do with myself. And I don't even know if a "bad" year takes me off the Hoiberg-train. It would have to be a complete regression from last year, like sub-14 wins or something, and butt kickings. But I don't even really have benchmarks, as far as post season play, that I feel need to be met for me to consider it a success. Should be noted, his first year at Iowa State they went 16-16... and I just felt like last year almost had a real "first year" feel to it, as if he'd finally got the coaches and staff he wanted, and the culture he wanted instilled.2 points -

This is tough to answer currently, as I honestly don't remember my exact panic level at each position from back in early April. But if I had to guess... PG - 5. I remember being optimistic that Lloyd could step into the Big PG role similar to Griesel and Banton. Lawrence can give some minutes here, Hoiberg can to a lesser extent although I prefer him off the ball. Cale could maybe provide some minutes too. Lots of options, but none as proven commodities running the show. So an average rating overall. SG - 1. Keisei and Lawrence seems like a good 1-2 punch. Sam giving minutes here if Lawrence is filling in at PG. Not an All-B1G level rotation but also certainly nothing to be concerned about. Portal efforts should be focused on other positions, not SG. SF - 8. Wilcher is one dimensional, and essentially our only returning wing. Lloyd could be a slasher and has the body to fill minutes at the three, but is that really where he fits? This seemed like a priority for a portal addition, but we could maybe have band-aided over the SF spot if needed. PF - 7. I like Gary a lot. But with his injury history you need another PF you can rely on on the roster. WB doesn't count as a backup PF, since he likely would be filling a lot of minutes at the 5. And speaking of which... C- 10. Wilhelm plus an injury-prone Keita just was not gonna be good enough in the B1G. Can't even really go small ball by sliding the starting PF down to the 5, since Gary is already a bit undersized as a 4. This was an area where we needed to make a serious addition via portal.2 points -

Depends on how you look at it. Our transfer class ranked 33rd on 247, but that was based more on who left than who we signed (we replaced mediocre players with decent players). Individually, our transfers had these rankings: 89 Mast 90 Williams 189 Ulis NR Allick I'm not sure how we "knocked it out of the park" on any of these. Mast was all-Valley, so that should translate to quality play but he's probably not an all-BIG caliber player. Williams was 2nd team C-USA, so ditto. Ulis lost his starting spot at Iowa. Allick is a good rebounder who essentially duplicates the role of Gary. I'd be shocked if Diop plays 5 minutes a game in conference. So as for "potential stars," I guess everyone qualifies for that but is anyone likely to achieve it? I'm not as negative on the season as it may seem. The soft non-con should have us confident entering BIG play, and we're always tough at home. The key to me is whether last year's chemistry can be repeated. Team chemistry was poor in Fred's first three years, and we don't know if last year was his doing, or if it was from last year's all-in senior class (Walker, Sam, Bando).2 points -

Towards the end of last season, I made a statement that some agreed with and others vehemently did not. I said that, for the first time in the Hoiberg era, we're approaching an off-season where the list of recruiting/portal needs is short and manageable. By that, I basically meant we didn't need to trash the entire roster and start over, we just needed to add a few, specific pieces, and that we'd put ourselves in a position to convince potential transfers to believe they could succeed here. So, here's the first question: Take all five floor positions -- PG, SG/Wing x 2, stretch 4 and post -- and, in terms of where we were with each as of basically the opening of the portal (basically after our departures), rate them on a zero-to-ten scale where zero means we're good, we've got a returning player at the spot who could step right in and not miss a beat, and ten means this is an important spot and we've got nobody on the current roster who could really do the job right now. To avoid confusion on ratings, the second question, which will also deal with ratings, will follow in a separate thread.1 point -
Watched it ....the girls seemed ready to go. A nice warm up game to get into a flow. Looks like about the whole new roster can contribute this year.. Hope Weidner can recover and make a go of it. A good way to get some gym time as a new squad. We'll be a bit different next season. Really liked the two freshmen. Good BBall IQ's... and good skill sets. They looked like they will be able to contribute pretty quickly. Potts started, but probably means little. She's got some get up and go though... no fear....either of the newbies. Three shooting was prevalent, and we did pretty well. Lots of subbing as would be expected. Small gym....looked like a small school gym. :)1 point

I’ll stick with what a wrote on the 1st portion of the thread. I’m SOLD on Ulis, Williams & Mast. Allick should be a Five & Diop an Eight. Think how surprisingly GOOD we were last year after Bando & Gary went down. I see no reason that trend can’t continue.1 point -

I am honestly unsure when the portal is open because dudes seem to jump into at random but relative to most of the action into the portal WB jumped in there relatively late. I'd argue that we recruited over WB before he left which likely contributed to him leaving. It's possible he's still here if we don't land Allick which potentially relegated WB to the role of 5th post player in the group of Gary, Keita, Allick, and Mast at the 4/5. I bring this up as I'd consider replacing WB as not part of our initial off-season plans but instead as a result of them, which may or may not be relevant in this exercise.1 point -

Recap from UNL The Madrid player, Mulero, is a 2nd/3rd Spanish League tier player if you're curious the type of foe we might face Madrid, Spain - Brice Williams had a game-high 28 points to lead five players in double figures, as Nebraska rallied for an 89-84 overtime win over the Madrid All-Stars Monday evening. Williams, a transfer from Charlotte, hit 10-of-14 shots from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, to lead a short-handed attack for the Huskers, who shot 46 percent from the field and hit nine 3-pointers in the win. C.J. Wilcher added 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamarques Lawrence added 14 points, which won the first of three games in Spain this week. NU also got major contributions from redshirt freshman Cale Jacobsen, who had 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals and true freshman Eli Rice, who finished with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Williams and redshirt freshman Ramel Lloyd Jr. topped NU with four assists apiece, as five of the nine players who dressed Monday had not played a regular-season game at NU. Nebraska trailed 74-62 early in the fourth quarter before mounting a 17-2 run to regain the lead. A Rice 3-pointer ignited a 7-0 spurt that pulled NU within 74-69 with 5:01 remaining. NU continued to battle and eventually took a 79-76 lead with 1:44 remaining. The Huskers led 81-78 with 1:12 left in regulation, but Madrid scored five straight to take an 82-81 lead on a basket Guillermo Mulero with 3.0 seconds left. NU took the inbounds at halfcourt and Lawrence found Jacobsen, who was fouled with 2.4 seconds remaining. The redshirt freshman banked in the first free throw but missed the second to send the game to OT. Jacobsen and Williams took over in the extra period, combining for all seven Husker points, as Nebraska did not allow a field goal in the five-minute overtime. NU took the lead for good on a Williams basket after NU, which was outrebounded 51-44, kept the possession alive with two offensive rebounds. Jacobsen drew a charge with 1:49 left and then gave NU an 87-82 lead with a 3-pointer on the subsequent possession. The Huskers, who don’t have a player taller than 6-foot-7 for this trip, forced 20 turnovers and held Madrid to 36 percent shooting. Madrid went 20-of-24 from the line to stay in the game. The Huskers will play their second game of the trip on Wednesday, when they travel to Valencia, Tipoff for that game is set for Noon (Central).1 point -

Sweet and sour sauce. Sour regarding the Ulis situation. "Gathering evidence" is not words one likes to hear. Not sure how good the adversary is; but it is nice to win a game/scrimmage. That said, we ourselves had a limited roster and it music to my ears hearing the point total for Williams and Wilcher.1 point -
