  3. Spain trip is July 28-August 7th. Hopefully Allick should be healed by then. Hoiberg quote, “As coaches, it gives us 10 additional practices during the summer to begin implementing our system as well as an opportunity to play three games where we can learn more about our team and use different lineups." I’m stoked!

The more tape I watch of this guy the more pleased I am by this pickup. Besides his big 10 experience and abundant playing time he seems like a true point guard who is going to distribute well, not turn the ball over, play aggressive defense and hit the open shot if it’s there. No trying to drop 30 a night like verge and will lead to good ball rotation. Just a hunch but I think this is a better “true” point guard that everyone on here wanted

This is a GREAT year for us to be able to take a foreign trip. You get a bunch of extra practices (and some games) which will be really helpful when you consider we lost 2 really important pieces from our starting lineup and need a little bit of game reps to figure out how the pieces are going to fit together. And there will be some GREAT head-to-head competitions within the roster. Allick vs. Gary. Gary is muscle and defensive motor; Allick is a bit more finesse and polish. Mast vs. Breidenbach/Keita/Allick. Let's see Mast face all comers. It's like Porsche vs. Ferrari. Mast is precision German engineering; the other guys might be a bit more agile and quick but more likely to blow a gasket. Ulis vs. Lloyd. They both want the PG job. Age against beauty. Experience against talent. Who distributes better? Who follows the script better? Does the ball stop in either of their hands too much? Who plays better defense? Wilcher vs. Williams vs. Lawrence vs. Tominaga. Four guys fighting for two spots. Keisei's job seems pretty secure. But can CJ find an extra gear and fight for a spot in the rotation? He'll have to dig deep or he'll be odd man out.

Counter-point: Gary's stats were racked up against SEC and Big Ten level competition Allick's were against WAC, Summit League and MWC.

Upvote on that one. Might be more talented guys out there, but Ulis is exactly what we need and he knows the Big Ten.

  10. I mean how long has it been since our roster has had competition at nearly every position heading into the season? Iron sharpens iron right?!? I. Am. Stoked! From the depths of despair to start last season to the high I am on with how this off-season has played out is crazy.

Instead of being forced out of necessity to Start Lylod, Blaise or C.J. it now appears we have some more talented options. Nice work Fred, can’t wait to see how this all shakes out & the pieces come together!

  12. Gary's high-water mark was last year when he shot 26% on 57 attempts from beyond the arc and 62% from the line. Allick's high-water mark was his junior year at UMKC when he shot 36% on 36 attempts from beyond the arc and 75% from the line. Combine his sophomore and junior years at UMKC and he was a combined 29 of 81 for 35.8% before slumping last season. According to Torvik's stats, Gary was 65.5% at the rim and 34.4% on other 2-pointers for us last year. Allick was 70.3% at the rim and 42.9% on other 2-pointers last year at New Mexico. Even with a bad year from downtown, Allick's EFG last year was about 10 pts higher than Gary's. Their rebounding numbers are very similar. Gary is *slightly* better on defensive rebounding and Allick slightly better on the offensive side. Allick was a full-time starter logging 32 minutes/game on a New Mexico team that was 35-40 spots better than us depending on whose computer you're going by. I agree Gary can guard all 5 spots. Allick is longer. It'll be an interesting battle.

If you need to compare Ulis to Sallis, sorry but Sallis is the better player. Now, if you're talking playing a guy at the point, Ulis is a point whereas Sallis would be a guy you're trying to turn into a point. Ullis is a solid veteran get and a guy who's played in the B1G for 3 years on a team like Iowa where he was used to moving the ball around. Not sure if there is a very high ceiling but their is a high floor in being a plug-in 20+ minute a game guy at point, a position of need.

  16. I mean it's not even a question that it's Nelson for me. But I feel like the addition of Allick and the fact that neither (or all) Wilcher, Breidenbach, or Keita entered the transfer portal - tells me we might not have a spot. Which would be highly unfortunate as I believe he's an instant "put you near the top of the conference" type of player. But it is what it is, and we don't have the luxury to wait it out.

  17. I’m guessing Allick will spend a healthy amount of time at the 4 and 5 next season and get his minutes that way. He and Gary on the court at the same time would give us some crazy athleticism. I could see Mast/Gary/Allick all getting about the same minutes if Allick is running back and forth wherever we need him. Gary has a knack for very clutch hustle plays and won us a couple of games with them last season. Regardless, Allick and Mast are seriously great additions.

Quote from HCFH "Ahron is a player we've gotten to know well having faced him five times over the last three seasons," Hoiberg said. "He brings a lot of valuable Big Ten experience to our program. Ahron possesses a very competitive defensive mindset, while offensively he is a talented ball handler and playmaker who is good in transition. In 2022 when Iowa won the Big Ten Tournament, he shared his team's Top Playmaker Award. Ahron has been to three NCAA Tournaments and comes from a great Marian Catholic high school program in Chicago. We're excited about the winning mentality he will bring to our team."

    23-24 Roster (updated)

Career 3pt%: Hoiberg 41% Williams 40% Keisei 37% Lawrence 37% Wilcher 36% Mast 33% Ulis 31% We likely aren't going to lead the conference in 3pt efficiency, but we do have enough capable shooters to spread the floor. I don't anticipate this year's team playing the brand of Hoiball that we are accustomed to. It's going to look different, and that's OK.

Here is information on the idea that Ulis played well last season but would sometimes "disappear": only four times last season was Ulis held scoreless--two of those were against the Huskers; using <4 points as a standard for "disappearing," that happened eight times--again, 25% of those eight times were against the Huskers; he scored in double digits 5 times (against Ohio St. twice, Rutgers, Michigan St. and TCU); he had 0 or only 1 turnover in 26 games, he had 2 turnovers in 2 games, but he had 4 turnovers in 2 games (Ohio St. and Rutgers) and 6 turnovers in 2 games (Michigan St. and Iowa St.); he shot 69 three-pointers and was below 33.3% in only one game (1 for 5 against Wisconsin); his worst games from the floor were Auburn (1-5), Purdue (1-6), Rutgers (2-8), Penn St. (1-6), Nebraska (0-4), EIU (2-10) and Georgia Tech (0-4); and he played >20 minutes in all but 7 games, until his 1-5 from three performance against Wisconsin on February 22--after that his minutes went to 15, 19, 13, 17 and 16.

  24. To me Allick was the final piece to the puzzle this off-season. We have a very solid 8 man rotation. Wilcher and Breidenbach are going to have to elevate their game this off-season if they want to crack the rotation. Sam Hoiberg may not have much opportunity barring injury. He’ll be a great insurance guy.

I'm just going to lay this out here and not trying to slight anyone: Starters: PG Ulis, 6'3 Jr SG Tominaga, 6'2 Sr SG Williams, 6'7 Jr PF Allick, 6'8 Sr C Mast, 6'9 Jr Bench: SG Lawrence, 6'3 So PF Gary, 6'6 Jr SG Lloyd, 6'6 Fr PF/C Breidenbach, 6'10 So

  30. It is. Loenser's been keeping his eye on him since last year. A'mare's still pretty raw but he has the touch to become a good shooter and has terrific length. Needs to keep learning how to play the right way (takes too many tough, contested mid-range jumpers), but there's plenty of upside there as he gets stronger.

I also have a coworker that is a diehard Iowa fan and he said the same thing. He said he hopes he does well at Nebraska and it came across as if he did like him, and he also said Ulis is a good dude. So I’m hoping we won’t have any chemistry issues and hopefully he’ll be a good leader on the floor.

  33. Started 27 games and played in all 32 this past season. My coworker is a diehard Iowa fan and said he wouldn’t blow us away with any one thing, but that he was a very safe and steady point guard that wouldn’t hurt us either. Sounds like a nice solid pickup with big ten experience.

  38. The more I’ve had to digest this the more I like this, maybe even love it. IMO this is an upgrade vs Quaran, who was/is largely an unknown on the court performer. Ahron had a few big games, notably against Michigan State. Love the big ten experience he brings to the table.

    23-24 Roster (updated)

Assuming Allick signs with us, I like the overall intangibles that this transfer class brings with them. Transfers often come with some baggage, expectations, and personal goals that don't show up in their stat lines. We've certainly seen that ourselves in years past while getting burned by guys that made the team worse despite being an individual talent. In contrast, last year's transfer additions were great culture guys. They were leaders. And it appears that this year's crop is built from that same mold. Williams: leading scorer that was willing to come off the bench rather than take the notoriety of being a starter. Our Manu Ginobili. Allick: By all accounts is one of the real good guys in the portal. Great family. Hard worker who has gotten every ounce of success possible out of the amount of talent he was given. Ulis: One of the few Iowa players in recent memory that was actually likeable. Plays with hustle and grit. Smart. Mast: Admittedly I didn't watch any Bradley games over the past few seasons. But the quotes he gave about his reasons for entering the portal, and his coach's comments about him, reflect positively on his character. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, particularly when the other additions all appear to have been made with their locker room impact in mind.

OK, so he's a MUCH better perimeter shooter than Sallis. He's not a volume guy, so that's good. Won't mess with our chemistry in terms of guys being uptight about who's going to get the shots. He's not quite as good at the stripe as Sallis, but he's certainly respectable. His assist:turnover ratio is much better. He started on an Iowa team that danced. He knows the Big Ten. Him vs. Sallis is a coinflip if you ask me. I'm comfortable with this.
