Terran Petteway's Mother has passed away.
Wayne Pesek and 4 others reacted to Norm Peterson for a topic
I disagree. For me, at least, after about 3 months, it started getting a lot easier. I could start talking about my dad without starting to choke up and I could tell my kids how proud of him I was without shedding tears. For three months, I couldn't say his name without my eyes getting red. Easier. Less pain. More acceptance. Day by day. Cancer is a heartless, indiscriminate killer that randomly and for no apparent reason shows mercy to some and ruthless cruelty to others. It's an agonizing way to die. It took my dad. It's fixing to take a couple of my dear friends. It might rear its ugly head and take me some day. I have a family history now. I know how Terran feels. And "sucks" doesn't begin to describe it. Hopefully he has a good support system in place. I wish him well.5 points -
Terran, I lost my dad when I was 26, my mom 9 years later. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. It never gets easier, but the pain eventually turns to fond memories.5 points

As they guy who coached against him... 1. I figured he would dominate the game, however foul trouble hindered him from doing that 2. Very good athleticism but defensively he jumps on most if not all pump fakes. 3. He PROBABLY isn't ready to play major minutes or start for us now or even next year. However, everything I have heard tells me thay he is an incredibly hard worker and I believe that he very well could be an impact player for us by yesr 2 or 3. Just my 2 cents4 points -
I agree with all the sentiments of support for Petteway whatever choice he makes. I am just grateful to him for what he has meant to Husker basketball. Were he asking my opinion, I would advise him to stay at NU where he can continue to do the things he is accustomed to in an environment with people who know and care about him and can help him through the challenging days ahead. Adding additional change points to his life in addition to the loss of his mother will be a very difficult thing to do.4 points

Ah crap...I though I had the date right on that though given I just had to double check if it was Wednesday or Thursday this isn't a huge shock to me. Disregard my previous post. Good job nailing that one, ME!3 points

I'm not sure anybody on any team is really forced out anymore. I think they meet with the coach and the coach says, "Hey, you are welcome to stay, but I don't see you playing much. I could understand if you want to look around." Kid thinks about it and decides that not getting to play at all isn't that much fun and decides to look around. Let's be frank - for the most part, these kids are going to school to play basketball. Despite Pitchford's one day protestations to the contrary, that is why they picked a school in the first place. When Pitchford retracted his statement and announced he was entering the NBA draft he said, "basketball is my life." I think that thought is shared by just about every D1 scholarship player. They want to play. Outside of walkons, who really wants to stick around and not see any playing time when you know there is a place you can go and play and continue to live out your dream? By the way, that is why the whole "guaranteed four year scholarship" thing is no big deal for schools to offer. The schools and coaches know that the number of times they will really have to honor that for kids who don't perform is very, very miniscule.2 points -

Agree 100% with Norm about cancer. Not that I want this to become some sort of self-help grief session, but there is just a unique feeling one gets at the loss of a parent. And it does take awhile before you "get over it," but never completely. I remember waking up every day and thinking about it. I have described it as similar to background music. You might not be directly focusing on it, but you are aware it's there. Or like a web page that opens every morning, and even as you perform other functions, that page is always open, like an app running in the background. It took a long time before I wasn't noticing this on a daily basis. I can remember the first time I realized that I had gone a whole day without thinking about my dad. It was a weird sensation of both guilt and relief. Good luck to Terran.1 point -

Our last two hires as assistants both at one time were Division 1 head coaches prior to becoming an assistant for the Huskers. Although I think the problem with hiring an ex-head coach is that they've got one eye always scanning the landscape for that next head coaching opportunity to come along. I think Yori has to look at the recruiting capabilities of the new coach first and foremost. The first call I would make would be to Boise St. and see if Coach Sunny had any interest in coming back.1 point -

To those who say they aren't impressed by this kid and think maybe he's just blowing up because, at this late stage in the recruiting game, teams are trying to fill up roster vacancies, let me ask what it is you aren't impressed with. I've answered the question a couple of times in this thread about why I do like him. I want to know why people hold a different view. Fill me in. What is it you see or don't see?1 point -

I would hate to see the women's game become more like the men's game. Rather than try to force that to happen, why don't they put more marketing into attracting more women and girls to the games, and university students? I would think that would be your target demo. Most of that needs to be done at the university level with a concerted effort from the athletic department. I'm a Husker fan and I support all Husker sports. Some I support more than others and women's basketball is one that I really enjoy to watch.1 point -

Honestly, I don't think he seems all that raw. There are some things I think he can polish up, but for a HS kid, he's pretty skilled. ESPECIALLY for a guy his size. Look at some of those videos that have been posted. These are more than just highlight films. I mean, they are highlight films but they're extensive and not just half second snippets of the kid's greatest plays of the year. You'll see basically ever basket he scored in entire games and the footage of each sequence ends up being up to several seconds long so you get a pretty good picture of how active he is, etc. There were several instances where he was out leading the break in transition on the dribble, defender tries to stop the ball (him) and he does a spin dribble to a layup. I mean, that's pretty good skill even for a 6'2" kid. You might hope to see a Johnny Trueblood be able to execute that move without travelling. But Edwards is 6'9". He's got very good agility, as I've mentioned a number of times, so I'm hesitant to continue to say it, but since you asked ... He has a very deft shooting touch around the basket. Look at the way he uses the backboard. That can be taught, but for him it seems intuitive. Not all shots for a post are going to be dunks at the next level. He has good size, he has good muscle structure and frame, which means he'll be able to add weight. I mean, what's not to like? The only thing that I kinda sorta question about him is that on the offensive side, when he gets the ball down low, he seems to want to finesse things a bit too much instead of going up strong. He's trying to fade away on his shots and avoid contact and I don't think he needs to do that. But that can be coached up pretty readily. Yes, I think this kid would see minutes and I think he'd see them right away. Depth or no depth. My money would be on him being in the top 8 in the rotation for sure. Possibly starting depending on how much Jacob Hammond improves during the off-season.1 point -

Which I clearly am not. But still, it's not often I am right about basketball-y stuff, so I'm proud of that one.1 point -
Do I have to be Frank? And I agree with most of this. However, a kid still can be forced out. A coach saying you can stay but you will not play is technically forcing a kid out given what you second paragraph states (and I agree with).1 point

I think he would be forced into more minutes than he would earn if NU had depth in the front court but still feel he would play some. He provides a lot of athleticism down low and can help create some mismatches while providing some rest for the starters.1 point -

Maybe some of the idiots that have been all over Teran for his play this year will now realize there really is more to a college athlete's life than just the sport he is playing. I haven't seen him ripped on this web sight as bad as some others, but we still need to realize that these students have a life outside of sports.1 point -

My guess is that Pitino put more emphasis on guys who could play defense. We know what that's like. Great comparison! Stats from those games would seem to indicate that he is slow or has trouble moving his feet on defense or, I guess worst case, is just lazy defensively. With the emphasis placed on D by this staff, it is hard to believe that a kid that couldn't see the floor at Louisville because of defensive lapses, and may have been encouraged to transfer despite a lack of returning players at his position, would find a lot of love at Nebraska.0 points
