I seen this topic on tweet from Jay Bilas today. Is this a good move for the men's game? In one sense it would speed the game up in that you probably wouldn't have 40 free throws and the scoring would increase. I found this article online today dated back in June. I have found more articles on it but they all read about the same.http://thecomeback.com/thestudentsection/basketball/mens-college-basketball-should-borrow-one-rule-from-womens.html

Actually the NCAA played 4 ten minute quarters between 1951 and 1954. B.H.Born of KU was the MVP in 1953, although his team lost to Indiana that year, which also is the first year I can remember having any interest in the tourney. Tom Gola led Lasalle to a victory the next year which was tainted when a better Kentucky team boycotted the tournament. Why the NCAA changed and then changed back to halves, I don't know.

I would as soon stick to halves.  It makes it feel more and more like the NBA.  Why do we have to change everything to be more like the NBA?.  I can count on one hand the number of full game NBA regular season I have watched in the last 15 years.  However, I rarely miss a Nebraska game.

Would you stop watching Nebraska games if they switched to quarters?

That's a good point.  I would still watch the games.  However, the more people talk about a 24 second clock, and now maybe quarters, the more, just IMO, it would lessen the college game.

I can't really put the right words together to explain why, but this has been my opinion on the topic as well.

Yes, yes, and yes. All the 'complaints' about the college game (poor offense, etc) are what make it the college game. In my opinion, only so much can be done to help the flow along before you start going in the opposite direction once again. A 24 second shot clock would be going just a tad too far. Without teams full of players with NBA skill sets and NBA caliber shooters this seems like it would lend to rushed sloppiness. 30 seconds has seemed like a good middle ground of increasing pace while allowing enough time for team offense.

The thirty-second shot clock has been a good change. Going down to 24 would not be an improvement, IMHO; only precision passing, exquisite shooting, & an imposing front court are able to produce effectively in the face of the short clock at the highest level.

The quarters wouldn't improve the level of play, but I think it would improve the entertainment value of the game. The switch to quarters eliminates a media timeout and replaces it with a quarter break. So at the end of the first and third quarters, you get added "final possessions" with the potential for two more buzzer beaters. And you eliminate two media timeouts, which sometimes are especially crappy for fans if a coach had just used a timeout a minute earlier.

I agree that a 24-second clock isn't necessary.

The Euro-step, traveling, palming, continuation have crept into the college game the last several years and yes it has affected the number of college basketball games I watch.  My sons call me old school because I point out officials are lazy and don't call the game as it is written in the rulebook.  For the record I am okay being labeled old school as I am NOT a fan of street ball.

As one who has survived widening the lane from six feet, no goal tending, no freshmen on varsity, three points for a long shot, no stalling, increasing the NCAA tournament from 22 teams, major rule changes and kept watching despite the long baggy shorts look, I doubt any of us would quit watching if they went to four quarters. I don't agree with Bilas that it would improve the game however. Since it might be a chance to sell more concessions with fewer commercials, I would guess this might be the deciding factor. The only things that would cause me to quit watching would be going back to center jumps after each goal or putting the bottom back in the peach basket.

Speaking of baggy shorts, jimmy, I've noticed this year that there are more than a few college players who are finally starting to wear shorts that are cut above the knee.  In some cases quite a bit above, actually.

I see this as a move in the right direction.

I think 4 quarters might open up the game some.  It would allow the players to get a break at the 10 min mark which they do not have at this time.  Which might make for less tired bodies by February.

I also do not want the 24 second clock.

And after watching many games this year I have come up with if you are going toward the basket, no travel should be called.  It isn't being called any way, just make it easier on the ref so we as fans don't come unglued when it is not called.

Also try to explain the jump stop hop thingy that has become so popular the last couple of years, always seems to be traveling to me, but hey what do I know?

Lastly, players, fans and coaches now know that the arm bar or two hands on a player is a foul if it is "out side" the three point line.  Can we now clean up the inside the three point line?  Guys drive and get killed, and trying to rebound is really hard.  Too much grabbing and not hitting arms but killing a guy with the body seems to be okay.

There's also a guy at Louisville that shoots his free throws granny style.

No travelling called? Might as well run up and down the court without dribbling.  Going to 4 quarters has sped up the women's games. Games should not take more than 2 hours to play and by reducing the # of media time outs that is accomplished.  All the media time outs in the men's game really interrupts the flow and pace of play.

If you think media timeouts are going to be eliminated, you are crazy.  TV networks are going to want their advertising money.  What will most likely happen is there will be a media timeout at the under 5 minute timeouts each quarter.  So, you are really going from 4 media timeouts to 3 (2 at the under 5, and 1 at the quarter break.

I am crazy!  But at least one media timeout per half is eliminated by going to the 4 Quarters.

isn't college men's bball the only time it's halves?  I haven't been to a HS game since I was in HS back in the 80's but weren't/aren't they played in quarters?

I believe that's the case, yes.

The only organized basketball in the world that doesn't play quarters.

Doesn't the break between quarters just equal what would be a media timeout?

I'm probably against the majority but I actually like 2 half's instead of 4 quarters.  If it would eliminate some media timeouts and team timeouts, then I'd be more in favor of it.  I still think each team gets to many timeouts and they are just used to bail your team out of a bad situation.  No other sport can call timeout right in the middle of a play just to bail you out of a bad situation.
